Huge congrats to @aperiamventures portfolio company Sincera on their acquisition by @TheTradeDesk! @mikeosullivan and Ian Meyers are two of the strongest founder/operators in ad tech. In a remarkably a short period of time Sincera has established itself as a critical player in our ecosystem. I first encountered Sincera at an ID5.io event in 2022, which I believe marked their official launch. I was very impressed by the industry-level identity data they were collecting. This was new stuff. It reminded me of the early days of MOAT in terms of its innovation and potential impact. Fast forward to 2023: I was at the LUMA Partners DMS event in NYC, while having ongoing conversations with Mike and Ian about participating in their Seed round. I vividly remember sitting next to Mike in the back of a session, head down, as he intensely worked on his laptop. Not long after, we made the investment. Later that year, Ari and I both independently named Sincera the Marketecture “Hottest Startup” of the year. Joe declared 2024 the "year of quality and outcomes". Sincera was at the forefront of that movement. They became synonymous with quality as their data powered TTD’s SP500+, IAS’s anti-MFA and Quality Attention products, and more. Mike also joined us on the podcast to discuss the challenges of marketing as an early-stage startup building a new category. This conversation became one of our most popular episodes of the year. Mega bullish on future of CTV ad tech. Sports entertainment (which this was, don’t get it twisted, and I say this as the biggest Tyson fan) increases TAM of live sports market. Both Magnite and TTD are prioritizing live sports for next year… Live streaming monetization here was same old same old - show promos (cobra Kai, squid game), logo placement. Format innovation and spatially aware AI is coming…
The Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight was… slower than I expected. As a viewer, the buffering and glitches were super frustrating. Netflix just couldn’t handle the massive number of people tuning in to watch the fight. While I managed to watch with only a few interruptions, many others struggled to even access the stream. The fight was Netflix’s first attempt at streaming a major live sports event, as they aim to compete with the big TV networks. Unfortunately, it was a rough start. Handling a 3X surge in viewership is no small feat and anyone who says it is has no idea what they are talking about. Live streaming at this scale requires robust infrastructure, scalable servers, and efficient content delivery networks to ensure a good experience for millions of viewers SIMULTANEOUSLY. From an AdTech perspective, I understand the complexities involved. While I was annoyed as a consumer, I can’t help but respect the immense effort it takes to pull this off. That said, props to Netflix and the teams who supported this event. It was not a complete failure no matter what the media says, but it was definitely a valuable learning experience.

What @viant_tech is doing here is really good. AI is already driving campaign performance via bidding and optimization algos. Automating the PLANNING piece with AI not only takes much of the manual work out but should over time drive significantly better performance via dynamic channel and daypart allocations. I think that making this prompt-based to start is an important step. Get customers interacting and used to working with AI. A power tool, not a threat.

This deal is interesting and exciting. Some thoughts, in no particular order: 1) T-Mobile emerging as a serious ad tech player. The strategic buyer universe needed fresh blood, and T-Mobile brings it all: scale, first-party data, ambition, and proven integration skills (see: Octopus, former @aperiamventures portco). 2) M&A for strategic growth. @tkawaja's "Thrive in 25" thesis and all that. Multiple growth catalysts: T-Mobile's rich subscriber data for targeting, retail footprint, ride share potential... 3) Smart vertical play while staying omnichannel-friendly. T-Mobile instantly becomes THE name in DOOH. Every RFP, every major conversation - they're now at the table. 4) Perfect solution to DOOH's chicken-egg problem. Vistar's existing demand relationships will be fuel for activating new placements and venues, should this be on T-Mobile's growth plan. 5) Speaking of, and slightly random but T-Mobile Arena = instant showcase for creative DOOH possibilities. 6) $600M cash deal sets a strong precedent for 2025 valuations. In adtech, cynicism is the default. Cynical takes sound smart. They get likes, which feeds the algorithm (thus your feed) and the ego. There is a darker side to this. Stay in that mindset too long and it becomes identity. Cynics lose the ability to see progress, let alone possibility. Optimists build, explore, win. Eyes open at all times but default optimism.
I see too much negativity on my feed across all social media. A lot of people are just trying to bash their competition or anyone that remotely threatens them. You know why you never see me speak badly on my direct competition? I don't fear competition, results speak for themselves. How about everyone focuses on the good things going on in the industry rather than just using negativity for clout. I apologize for the rant, but damnnnn it annoys me.

Today is a very special day for me and the @WithMarketAI team as we are excited to share that we’ve been acquired by Verishop Group! Verishop Group was founded by two of the most impressive people I know – CEO, Cate Khan , who spent almost a decade at @amazon as their SVP of Retail, and Chairman, @dottkhan, who helped lead @AlibabaGroup and @Snap through their respective IPOs and who now runs Proem Group. In addition to their incredible team, Verishop Group is backed by world-class investors including @lightspeedvp, @Rakuten, Lion Capital, and DCM, among others, who to date have invested over $140 million into the business. Blind spot for some ad tech startups is including big ad tech co’s in their TAM. For infra, large ad tech co’s w/ managed service teams = same needs as agencies/media co’s. For apps, (data, measurement, etc.), they can be a gtm accelerant. Tend to be easier to get to, also.
