ALT Surrounded by flames, Alaska wildland firefighter Carson Long uses a drip torch to set a backburn, hoping to contain an out-of-control wildfire burning in early July near Vanderhoof, B.C. Long and his colleagues were among thousands of foreign firefighters brought into western Canada amid the worst wildfire season in Canadian history. Paradoxically, fighting modern wildfires driven by climate change now often means putting more fire on the landscape when waterbombers and bulldozer lines become ineffective. To carry out backburns, firefighters like Long must subject themselves not only to the immediate risks from the flames, but to the potential life-long impacts of increased exposure to smoke and ash.
