Three tweets that new Torstar CEO Marina Glogovac has deleted since yesterday:
ALT September 1, 2021, tweet from Roman Baber (Roman_Baber):
Like most Public Health nonsense, the passport won't stop the spread. But it will cause apartheid, hate, bankruptcy and an unprecedented Gov't intervention in our lives.
@fordnation sold Ontario out. He can't stand up to the Covid mob. #FireFord #onpoli
He links to a Brian Lilley column about Ford moving ahead with vaccine passports.
To which Marina Glogovac (@MarinaGlogovac) replied:
Vaccinated+had Covid, but, I will not step into any establishment that requires passports, on principle. Did the living in a communist country thing, thank you. Plus, it's completely illogical. Both groups spread the same! This is not about safety."
ALT December 4, 2021, tweet from Baber:
I lived the first 9 years of my life in Communist USSR. See pic of me in a Soviet school uniform.
When I compare @fordnation gov't conduct to that of Communist regimes, I don't do so lightly. Speaker @MPPArnottWHH turned off my mic. I finish the statement from my office. #onpoli
There's a video of him speaking.
To which Glogovac replied:
I lived the first 26 years of my life - and like you, I see what's coming. Here we have a curious and powerful emergence of ""mass formation"" - a psychological phenomenon that enabled all totalitarian regimes. Us /them. Passports, memberships. Segregation. Those with resources win
ALT July 27, 2021, tweet from Baber:
Ontario CMOH, Dr. Moore, joyfully telling parents that vaccinated children and unvaccinated children will be subjected to two different sets of rules in school.
We must not permit @fordnation & @Sflecce to create two classes of Ontario children. #onpoli #onted
To which Glogovac replied:
Does not matter what he thinks! It matters what Pfizer executives think and want - we are witnessing a policy and government capture by a massive corrupt drone corporation. Dig deeper folks.
62 journalists at the Toronto Star have signed a letter to management concerning a "hateful, racist reply-all email" sent last week by columnist Rosie DiManno:
ALT A letter to the Toronto Star
NOTE: THIS IS AN INTERNAL MESSAGE. PLEASE DO NOT SHARE PUBLICLY.
To:
Irene Gentle, Editor in Chief of the Toronto Star
Wayne Parrish, Torstar’s senior vice-president editorial
John Boynton, President and Chief Executive Officer of Torstar and Publisher of the Toronto Star
David Callum, Toronto Star Human Resources
On Wednesday, August 19, Rosie DiManno sent a hateful, racist reply-all email in response to Shree Paradkar’s appointment as internal ombud as “part of developing structures to ensure Black, Indigenous and journalists of colour have a way to be safely and clearly heard by colleagues, decision makers and leaders.”
DiManno called the role of an internal ombudsperson — a position developed to create a safe space for BIPOC newsroom members to raise editorial concerns — a "fucking abomination." This is an unacceptable denigration of the concerns and experiences of BIPOC newsroom members; it is in effect an example of the kind of racism…
ALT DiManno has been degrading and aggressive to members of multiple departments and has never faced repercussions that we have seen, given their continuous occurrence. This bullying happens over the phone, in direct emails and out in the open. Our managers have not acted. We are all aware of the pervasive abuse these teams have been subjected to. We feel this impunity reflects a larger culture at this newsroom.
In the wake of DiManno's reprehensible comments, only one staff member addressed DiManno’s behaviour directly. This speaks to the invisible hierarchies in place in the Star newsroom. Afterward, Wayne Parrish and John Boynton sent an email expressing support for Paradkar. We want them and other senior managers at the Star to publicly condemn DiManno's comments. Failure to do so suggests that some in this newsroom follow different rules than the rest of us.
Additionally, if our predominantly white newsroom leaders do not address this, it clearly reinforces the need for…
ALT The Star has expressed a commitment to anti-racism, pledged to listen, learn and take meaningful action. We ask that the company do so now.
We insist management enforce DiManno's participation in anti-racism training, for DiManno to apologize to the newsroom and demonstrate an understanding of why these measures are necessary.

ALT [69] I accept that the “neo-Nazi sympathizer” comment is a serious one. I would not, however, draw an inference that it resulted in serious reputational harm to Mr. Levant on the record in this case. First, the statement was fairly quickly removed from the article in question. Second, the article itself drew limited attention, given the evidence that it generated slightly fewer than 16,000 views on the internet. Third, is the evidence regarding the state of Mr. Levant’s reputation as reflected in the affidavits filed on behalf of the respondent. Balanced against all of that is the sole statement of Mr. Levant in his affidavit:
I believe that the dissemination of these defamatory statements has damaged my reputation in this regard, and accordingly, Rebel News and I should be entitled to compensation.
That statement is not only self-serving, it is completely devoid of any foundation for the belief.
But isn't Postmedia already conservative, you may ask? Well, the company's new leadership thinks that even the National Post isn't reliably conservative enough.
ALT Some of the Post’s marquee columnists, albeit right-leaning, have tended to take a variety of positions on subjects ranging from carbon pricing to socio-cultural issues, and so editors were told the paper had to become more reliable in its conservative politics.
“But really!?” one editorial employee remembers thinking when they were briefed on the meeting. “The National Post not conservative enough?!”
"This is an extraordinarily embarrassing and empty response from the leader of a corporation that has grossly mishandled coverage of this crisis and has been complicit in upholding systemic anti-Black racism in this country for a very long time."

And a centrist paper like the Edmonton Journal, long a thorn in the side of Alberta's Conservative parties? Postmedia removed the editor-in-chief in part because he supported carbon pricing:
ALT Iype — who had objected to Libin’s earlier proposed role and whose editorial board had come into direct conflict with the government Postmedia was wooing — was removed from his position at the Journal and reassigned to a newly created role.
Two sources at Postmedia’s corporate headquarters in Toronto, familiar with management’s thinking, confirmed that the company was displeased with the political orientation…
"Thanks for your note, Catherine...I think we have quite a way to go to live up to our mandate as a "public" broadcaster. I believe more Black people, People of Colour and Indigenous people in positions of leadership and power at the CBC would bring about that paradigm shift."
The City of Toronto is expected to spend up to nearly $10 million over 15 years to lease and renovate a property belonging to a numbered company owned by the parents of Craig and Marc Kielburger.
"...this letter reads as congratulatory when the CBC has been called out publicly for how we have been complicit in anti-Black racism again just in these past days."
Contrary to what is suggested here by WE Charity, Canadaland has *not* been served with a defamation lawsuit by WE, despite threats from WE that they would sue us if we published what we knew about them.
If that changes, we'll let you know.

ALT Union rejects management’s decision to publish Ezra Levant guest column

Sue-Ann Levy announces that, after 31 years, she's leaving the Toronto Sun "to pursue a love of acting":
ALT A Facebook post from Sue-Ann Levy from an hour ago:
Well I did it!
After a year of incredible challenges, the loss of my dad and the sudden decline of my mom, I have decided to leave the Toronto Sun after 31 years. It was a very emotional decision after 31 years pursuing my passion. I came out on the front page of the Toronto Sun in 2007,, met my wife on a story and grieved the loss of my sweet dad on the front page last Nov. 30. I have loved advocating for all kinds of people and telling politicians what they deserve to hear. I don't love the change in the climate for conservative journalists and the feeling of being bullied online or the attitude of the woke that they can attack you right in your face now if you don't agree with them. Hopefully that very ugly part of human nature will repair itself but for now, I'm off to do many other things. Among them: I'm going to pursue a love of acting I had to put aside when I became a journalist. I will say farewell in the Sun before I go.
CBC has confirmed to us that on election night in Ontario, CBC TV will be broadcasting an episode of the Murdoch Mysteries, not local election coverage. They cite "competing priorities" and "commitments to our advertisers" as the reasons why.
The CBC was so concerned about reputational damage that they fired Ahmar Khan for trying to blow the whistle on systemic racism at the broadcaster.
Whoops.

In a news release, CANADALAND contributor @KarlDockstader says he was "arrested and charged yesterday for reporting during a land action at #1492LandBackLane" (@1492LBL):
ALT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -
Indigenous Journalist Arrested While Reporting on Land Defense
Haldimand County - September 3rd - 2020
Karl Dockstader - Oneida of the Thames Bear Clan - is a freelance journalist working for One Dish, One Mic Indigenous media who was arrested and charged yesterday for reporting during a land action at 1492 Land Back Lane. Criminalizing a member of the Indigenous media sets a dangerous precedent in a society that is supposed to have a free press.
Karl spent last week at 1492 Land Back Lane to do an immersive story for One Dish, One Mic as independent media. He understood that as a journalist that as long as he didn't actively assist the land defenders that his status as a journalist would protect his work. On the last day he was there for the week - August 29th - he made the following editorial commentary:

More generally, there are concerns about what Postmedia's new editorial leadership will mean for reporters and columnists covering climate issues.
ALT …one prominent writer for the newspaper chain expressed concerns to them in private conversations that Libin’s views on climate change could pose a threat to any attempts to objectively cover issues such as carbon pricing, and that the company gave a vague non-answer when the writer asked what would happen to stories that feature favourable views of carbon taxes.
And another nearby building was recently acquired by the City for $2 as part of a community-benefits arrangement with a condo developer, which had set up its own numbered company to purchase it off of WE Charity for $2.75 million.
That same numbered company was also used to purchase a different property on behalf of the ME to WE Foundation.
And a different numbered company belonging to the parents owns a different property next door to the one the City is leasing.
"There is a history of the appellants using litigation to silence critics," the judges write, in deciding to increase the cost awards The Rebel must pay to the defendants.
ALT Turning to the cases at hand, there is evidence that these actions were commenced in an effort to quell the public expressions made. They bear the indicia of a SLAPP lawsuit. …
· a history of the plaintiff using litigation or the threat of litigation to silence critics;
· a financial or power imbalance that strongly favours the plaintiff;
· a punitive or retributory purpose animating the plaintiff's bringing of the claim; and
· minimal or nominal damages suffered by the plaintiff.
[83] Three of those four factors are present in these cases, the sole exception being a financial or power balance that strongly favours the appellants. There is a history of the appellants using litigation to silence critics. Indeed, Mr. Levant has publicly proclaimed that commencing such lawsuits is part of a deliberate campaign, which he calls his “stop de-platforming strategy”. Other aspects of his public statements…

A new statement about the history of WE Charity was added to its website over the weekend (we.org/en-CA/about-we/get-in…), concluding with this paragraph:
ALT The lasting emotion we will take away from the last 25 years is gratitude. We are grateful to the 2,500 staff who created a world-changing. We are especially grateful to the local staff hired to lead WE Villages projects, working hard to create lasting change in their own communities. We are grateful to our many skilled Board members who provided leadership, sound oversight and advice. We are grateful to our donors and partners who enabled these free programs for youth. We are grateful to the educators and students who brought alive the curriculum about causes and service campaigns.
