Once again, the @sfchronicle misses the bigger point.
The real question is, why is @SFUnified graduating so many 8th graders who are not prepared to read, write, or do math at grade level?
And why is the Chronicle so indifferent to this question?
It's astonishing to watch Alison Collins come unglued on Twitter as she comes face to face with the reality of her impending recall.
59 more days.
Don't let up.
@recallsfboe
#HeyGoogle Teachers like me wish we could schedule an assignment for more than one course section at a time.
Instead, Google Classroom forces us to re-input every bit of info for each class we want to pre-schedule an assignment for.
To call this cumbersome is an understatement.
.@collegeboard Couple civil rights questions for you regarding AP exams:
(1) How will blind students access the Braille versions of the exam demos and AP exams to which they're legally entitled? (2) How will they access the tactile graphics to which they're legally entitled?
Stumbled on this statistic. SFUSD's higher-performing HS are all funded at per-pupil funding of around $5K - 6K.
Apparently we have plenty of money to fund 171+ executives in the central office, which seems nuts for a district of only 49,500 students.
But this is our life now.
🧵 Welcome to today's episode of More Legally Obtained Documents About Problems with the CA Math Framework (CMF).
In my view, these are some of the most egregious. 1/
Having worked with them both during the pandemic, I am THRILLED by Mayor @LondonBreed's appointments of Ann Hsu and Lainie Motamedi to the Board of Ed! And I'm excited to meet and work with Lisa Weissman-Ward whose credentials and experience are amazing.
@recallsfboe
Thank you, Commissioner @FaauugaMoliga, for modeling the grace that a true leader demonstrates, even through difficult times.
You are teaching through your example, and it is powerful.
This is what patriotism looks like.
@recallsfboe
To the hundreds of teachers who DMed me or e-mailed your support in the face of today's onslaught: I'm sorry I can't finish all of my thank you's tonight.
Please know that your support in the face of an awful power dynamic kept me going today. My gratitude is bottomless. ❤️
Almost HALF of all SFUSD graduates do not qualify for the UC system.
So much for celebrations of the district's "graduation rate."

What about the fact that the entire Democratic leadership conspired to cover up President Biden's diminished cognitive acuity?
I'm as blue a Democrat as they get, but I felt betrayed by this cover-up.
Trust is fragile. Imagine how non-Democrats must have felt.
Here's how you know this isn't a "free speech" or a "politeness" issue.
The protesters are targeting a Jewish professor for being Jewish.
They are attacking him in his home.
This is what we call A POGROM.
Dear So-Called Experts,
The secret to distance learning is NOT the nifty little forms of engagement or uses/non-uses of the camera.
The secret to distance learning is to know where your students are & how much is enough for any given lesson.
Love, Actual Teachers Everywhere
Facebook's systems are not just "amplifying bias"; they are actively amplifying hate.
$10 million from his personal fortune is a drop in the bucket. What I want to know is how he is going to lead a transformation of his corporation to stop amplifying and profiting from hate.
You know what? I'm just getting used to teaching to a bunch of static boxes. Many of my kids are too self-conscious about their living situations to turn on their cameras. That has to be OK.
Our postal service is on the verge of collapse. I’m calling on Congress to act swiftly to shore up USPS so that everyone can continue to receive essential medicines and supplies, and as many Americans as possible can vote from home. #SaveThePostOfficenytimes.com/2020/04/09/us/po…
.@timothydsnyder unpacks Bezos' implicit subtext in deciding that he'll force the Washington Post to obey in advance:
"I'm going to be fine. I'm going to enjoy life in the shadows of authoritarianism."
DEEP THOUGHT: The longer I teach high school math, the more convinced I become that vocabulary development is one of the central and defining tasks for student success.
Unlike @Trianglemancsd, I am open to questions at this time.
All of which would be fine with me if her data and facts were correct, but they're not.
She's just raking it in on the backs of poor Black and brown children.
Talk about having a white savior problem.
My students are so uncharacteristically wooden and quiet during Zoom calls; then when it's time to sign off and say goodbye, everybody gets animated and back to their old talkative selves. It's all part of the weirdness of teaching under quarantine. #MTBoS
CORRECTION: At the 08/04/21 meeting, the Oxnard School District board was forced to approve an addendum to @joboaler's contract.
She went back & required that they correct the error in the original contract -- she collected $40,000 ($5,000/hour) -- not $20,000 ($2,500/hour).
Why we’re fighting to save SFUSD’s AP program and its feeder pipeline, the AVID program — even while Alison Collins pursues a scorched-earth efforts to burn it down on her way out.
A 🧵 /1
TRANSLATION: "Hi, I'm a news producer in London & the whole of the UK would like to understand how @SFUnified managed to squeeze in the teacher pay catastrophe while also failing on literacy, numeracy, math program, & financial management. It's impressive. Please and thank you"
It's such a shame this bogus theory gained such wide currency. I say it's a shame because it's not actually bad to be aware of varying sensory-input-channels as you're teaching or designing instruction.
But the idea that they form some kind of "theory" is cuckoo bananas.
Think how messed up this is. Moderates in San Francisco are resorting to the electoral process to communicate a pro-math-education standpoint.
And still, there are people who want to campaign against it.
You cannot make this stuff up.
.@ddmeyer Here's the scarier thing to me than losing instructional time: almost half of my students receive free breakfast & lunch at school. How are they getting fed today with school closed? #myschoolisactuallyclosedduetocovid19
I've got to tell you -- out of all the things that went wrong yesterday -- & I have too many to choose from -- the one thing that went right yesterday was @Desmos.
So thank you, @Desmos, for supporting teachers and trusting teachers.
#MTBoS#iteachmath
DEEP THOUGHT: Having time for teachers to help each other debug problems & obstacles is a thing that actually has to happen in order to make distance learning work.
#teachingreminder#MTBoS
The combination of a clear system for cellphone storage during class and swift, consistent parent contact is leading to a happier classroom than I've had in a few years.
Instead of doing careful diagnostic testing of all incoming 9th grade students, SFUSD was very busy doing renaming, overspending, and doing other sideshows and vanity projects.
We are seeing the results of those choices now.
This negligence is harming kids.
@recallsfboe
San Francisco finally voted out our city government's leading antisemite/anti-Israel bigot. It took a long time and a large community effort.
We are wishing West Hollywood strength in your own battle. Let us know how we can help
.@tyegregory
No elected official undermined Jewish safety since 10/7 quite like Dean Preston. San Francisco’s antisemitic groups just lost their reigning champion. 👋
The data from SFUSD Math that @SBECalifornia is relying on for its revised math FW are fatally flawed.
This project involved data scientists, teachers, lawyers, parents, students, & CPRAs. And LOTS of analysis.
Please read & share our blog post, data, & report.
SFUSD data currently being relied on by @CADeptEd to revise math curricula is false and misleading. Adoption based on SFUSD’s flawed success metrics may introduce new inequities for Black and Brown students. See our report: bit.ly/sfusd_math#DoTheMath#ShowYourWork
And as you know all too well, it also fails most CA universities' standards for mathematical preparedness for entering college students.
Read our open letter from over 1,600 mathematicians & educators.

Didn't take long for Fisher to pick up Alison Collins' misleading claims about Lowell's funding.
She wants Lowell to have to beg private donors for basic public school funding.
Who else saw this coming?
KQED apple.news/A2EfEJYt8TnmAhWM4…
Alida Fisher taking up Alison Collins' signature claim that Lowell has "amazing resources" is tantamount to admitting she favors defunding Lowell -- even more than it already is.
The the lowest-funded per pupil school in @SFUnified.
Elections have consequences, my friends.
California Reading Coaltion released the California Reading Report Card today: CAreads.org/reportcard
**SFUSD is currently ranked 267 out of 287 - the bottom 10% in the state for reading levels. 😬**
I already feel exhausted from the pressure to make every class be a special, life-sustaining social event.
I’m just trying to keep my head above water.
SFUSD now claiming that if they cut 25% of high school budgets, students will have even more AP choices than ever --because every family in America can relate to the suggestion that when you don't have enough money, you still get more stuff!
#unrealarguments
I don't get why @UESF keeps repeating SFUSD's & BOE's toxic fairy tale about AP teachers being "unwilling" to work.
It's not "an extra AP prep." It's release time to do the extra AP work.
SFUSD's AP Program is successful because SFUSD inadvertently funded it to be successful.
Has @UESF polled the actual membership regarding views on the recall of the BOE members?
It seems like with 6,200 of us members and such low voter participation in union elections, it would be a good idea to make sure a resolution of this scale matches the views of all of us.
Somebody -- please explain that directors are only permitted to make trades on their supervised companies during specific trading windows that are scheduled at least a year in advance.
Please and thank you.
I cannot stress this enough: read our open letter, signed by over 1,600 leading mathematicians and math educators: sites.google.com/view/k12mat…@joboaler has been mischaracterizing this group of scholars & educators as a right-wing cabal, but none of us have called the police.
Now that we're all neck-deep into Zoom technology, let's talk about best practices for meetings. This comes from 25+ years of working remotely as a serial entrepreneur & executive in Silicon Valley. 1/
I was going to write a blog post about the whole mess w @joboaler but I don't have the psychic energy. #cannotevenchat
Instead, here's a more important blog post that is informing my thinking about distance learning in the pandemic. Let's discuss.

There's so much to object to here. The blatant antisemitism. The coordinated deceptions. The outright violations of Ed Code. The circumvention of professional responsibilities.
Professor Brian Conrad, Director of Undergraduate Studies in Mathematics at @Stanford, weighs in on the California Math Framework:

2 - IMO, this 03/2021 email shows Boaler asking “if 'inequalities' are at all relevant in data science."
Does this fill you with confidence that she knows what math content is necessary for a data science major?
Me neither. 3/

It's also why House Ways & Means is referring these organizations both to the IRS & to state AGs (including @RobBonta of CA) for revocation of their tax-exempt status.
THIS WHOLE SITUATION HAS BEEN BONKERS. THANK YOU FOR FINALLY HEARING US.
Love,
America's Jewish teachers
I am still reeling from how Alison Collins' hatred played out last night. Her facial expressions & voice communicated her rage & hatred against her AAPI colleagues.
Her hatred is real. It's clear she is hurting. But hurt people hurt people. We can't keep going like this.
I've had to read this article and these threads several times to digest this.
The DSA not only invented their own fake news outlet, they invented fake people.
They invented people.
What on Earth???
