As of today, San Francisco is first county in the nation to stop generating revenue from incarcerated people and their families through phone calls, commissary markups, and other services.

Starting tomorrow morning at 5am we will be lifting the curfew in San Francisco. The protests we have seen in this city and across the country are for an important cause and our city will continue to facilitate any and all peaceful demonstrations.

Last night, over 1,000 people crowded on Ocean Beach to celebrate Burning Man. This was absolutely reckless & selfish. You are not celebrating. You are putting people's lives at risk. You are putting our progress at risk. No one is immune from spreading the virus.

Effective at midnight, San Francisco will require people to stay home except for essential needs. Necessary government functions & essential stores will remain open. These steps are based on the advice of public health experts to slow the spread of #COVID19.

I'm proud to announce that today San Francisco became the first major American city with 80% of our eligible residents having received a vaccine dose. On Tuesday we'll remove nearly all local COVID-19 restrictions. San Francisco will be fully reopen.

This weekend, City Hall will be lit in Ukraine's Colors as San Francisco stands with Ukraine. 🇺🇦

Today I issued a statement on the need for our School District to focus on reopening our public schools, not renaming them. To address inequities, we need to get our kids back in the classroom.

Tonight in San Francisco: The @warriors are at Chase Center fighting for the playoffs. The first place @SFGiants are "welcoming" the third place Dodgers to Oracle Park. The doors of our restaurants and bars are open for business. This city is coming alive again.

This afternoon, there was an attempted robbery in Union Square involving San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and he was shot. SFPD was on scene immediately and an arrest of the shooter was made. My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time. We will provide more updates, including on his condition, as I receive them.

Restaurants are struggling to survive and delivery is their main option for staying open. I'm instituting a cap on the fees that delivery services can charge restaurants during this emergency, because it can make the difference between them staying afloat or laying-off staff.

Today is a historic day. The Board just voted to make JFK Drive permanently car-free. An essential space for our residents and families that is now, a long-term benefit to this city. We still have work to do, but passing this legislation is where we begin to make real change.

Our reopening process is guided by data and science. COVID-19 cases are rising throughout CA. We're now seeing a rise in cases in SF too. Our numbers are still low but rising rapidly. As a result, we're temporarily delaying the re-openings that were scheduled for Monday.

This is not the time to be hanging out at the park. This is not the time to be visiting friends. You can go outside for essential needs or to get some quick exercise, but then you need to return home. Simply put, go outside as little as possible. Stay home. Save lives.

Starting today, people in San Francisco are required to wear face coverings at essential businesses, in public facilities, on transit, and while performing essential work. This is not a replacement for staying home and physical distancing, but it is an important step for safety.

Starting this morning, our first Street Crisis Response Team is now operating and responding to 911 calls relating to mental health or addiction in San Francisco. This will allow us to reduce law enforcement responses to non-violent activity and let them focus on public safety.

We are lowering our City's flags to half-staff and will light up City Hall red, white, and blue tonight in honor of the great Congressman John Lewis.

To be clear: 4/20 will not be tolerated this year. Do not come to San Francisco to celebrate. We will cite people. We will arrest people if necessary. Order food. Watch Netflix. Stay home and stay safe.

San Francisco's COVID-19 reproductive rate is back under 1, at 0.99! That means for every person who gets COVID-19, on average they're passing it to less than one other person. We're slowing the spread. If this continues, we could soon start reopening under CA's guidelines.

To a native San Franciscan, some things just go without question: it’s foggy in the summer, cable cars go halfway to the stars, and Willie Mays is the best there ever was. It was an unbelievable opportunity of a lifetime to meet someone like Willie Mays. I remember hearing about the struggles that he endured because he was black, and what he overcame to become an icon on the field and the greatest baseball player of all time. He was from a generation who faced segregation and racism, a generation that paved the way so that many of us could have the freedom to thrive. Willie Mays meant so much to this city as a player, but also as a leader, staying involved in San Francisco and the Giants organization long after he retired from the game he loved. Willie Mays will forever be the greatest of giants in the story of San Francisco.

Growing up in the Western Addition neighborhood, it never seemed possible that I could one day serve as Mayor. I would not be here today without the community that believed in me. I will do everything I can to afford those opportunities to the next generation. #SFMayor

We're working to slow the spread of coronavirus in San Francisco, but we know that the challenges we face are going to get tougher. The public health order for people to say safe in their homes will soon be extended until at least May 1. More details to come soon.

I'm declaring a State of Emergency in the Tenderloin, which will eliminate bureaucratic barriers and allow us to more quickly respond to the conditions relating to the health and safety of the people in the neighborhood.

We started vaccinating every resident at Laguna Honda Hospital who wants a vaccine yesterday. By tomorrow we'll be done. Over 1,000 staff have also received a vaccination. This has been the location that we feared was most vulnerable to a major outbreak. Today is a new day.

Last night the Board of Supes rejected a project with 500 new homes to replace a parking lot. It met the criteria for approval and it would have created 100+ new affordable homes. If you're wondering how we got into our housing crisis, this is how.

San Francisco will begin administering our first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine tomorrow morning, prioritizing our frontline healthcare workers. Almost nine months after our first Stay at Home order, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

It took San Francisco 38 days to go from 2,000 to 3,000 COVID-19 cases. It took 19 days to go from 3,000 to 5,000 cases. It took 13 days to go from 4,000 to 5,000 cases. It took 9 days to go from 5,000 to 6,000 cases. The virus is here and it is spreading quickly.

We've heard people may return tonight. Don't do it. We will be closing the parking lots at Ocean Beach. Law enforcement will be patrolling. We know people love Burning Man & people want to get together this weekend. But we all need to do our part. Stay home, stay safe.

One year ago today I told San Francisco that we needed to stay home and save lives. Today, I'm getting vaccinated with the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine to show that all the vaccines are safe and effective. This is how we end the pandemic. When it's your turn, get vaccinated.

I’m excited to see our Shared Spaces legislation pass unanimously at the Board, which means that the parklets and outdoor dining we’ve come to love will now continue permanently in San Francisco!

San Francisco is opening three high volume vaccination sites, as well as community sites across the City, coordinating private providers that have received doses directly from the state. The sites will be located at City College, SF Market in the Bayview, and Moscone Center.

The first Johnson & Johnson vaccines were administered in San Francisco today! As supply ramps up, these one-dose vaccines will help us speed up our vaccinations and finally put an end to this pandemic.

We originally set an ambitious goal of administering 10,000 vaccines per day in San Francisco. We're now averaging 11,000 shots every day. On Friday, we hit a new record--14,000 shots in a single day!

I'm glad to hear that the State has updated their Stay at Home order to allow outdoor playgrounds to open. Outdoor activity is important for all of our physical and mental health, especially children. We're now updating our guidelines and playgrounds in SF will open by tomorrow.

San Francisco has secured funding from the State's Project Homekey, which will allow us to purchase a 232-room hotel for permanent supportive housing. This is part of our Homelessness Recovery Plan, which includes the largest one-time expansion of PSH in 20 years

On April 11th we had 94 people hospitalized with COVID-19. By mid-June we were down to as low as 26 people. We’re now back to 80 people in the hospital. This virus is here and it's spreading. We must act right now to stop it. What has changed? People are gathering again.

Today Public Health Officers announced an extension of the Stay Home order through May. We do expect some lower-risk activities to be allowed to resume soon, but for the safety of you and those around you we must build on the progress we've made.

Protecting public health means keeping people secure in their homes. Today I'm officially enacting a moratorium on evictions due to loss of income related to a business closure, loss of hours or wages, layoffs, or out-of-pocket medical costs caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Today I signed a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday, as a holiday here in San Francisco. June 19th is now officially Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Over 300,000 San Franciscans have received at least one dose of a vaccine. That’s 40% of residents over 16.

Since December, almost 1,800 people in San Francisco who were not vaccinated have been hospitalized with COVID-19. Do you know how many San Franciscans were hospitalized from COVID despite being vaccinated? Six. A total of six. The vaccines are safe and they're effective.

When people reject offers of shelter, we should be able to enforce city laws. Last week, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the City agreed in court with this point. This was a huge step.

My policy: I will veto any and all anti-housing legislation. A lack of housing hurts workers, families, and our economy. It drives so many of our challenges: poverty, homelessness, climate change. San Francisco must be a housing leader — a city of yes.

Starting today, San Francisco is going from having the longest permitting process to one of the shortest. This is a huge deal. I was proud to join Senator @Scott_Wiener and pro-housing supporters to celebrate SB 423 going into effect, which will streamline the housing approval process in San Francisco, cutting through red tape and accelerating the construction of both affordable and market-rate housing. Under this new state law, we are going from getting housing approved in years to just months. This is about families, about workers, and about the next generation growing up here being a part of this city’s future. This is a significant step in our ongoing commitment to addressing the housing shortage and building a more inclusive city.

This is an attempted coup encouraged by the President of the United States. It’s a dark day for our democracy, and the culmination of all of his anti-democratic words and actions from his campaign through his presidency. We are better than this.

At the root of so many of our issues is our housing crisis. Our unending systems of laws seems designed as if to say NO to creating more homes, and we've seen the results. It’s time to say YES to more affordable housing, more middle income housing, and more market rate housing.

When someone is openly using drugs on the street we're going to give them the option of going to the services and treatment we're providing. But if they refuse, we're not going to allow them to continue using on the street. The families in the neighborhood deserve better.

Today we officially extended the stay at home health order through May 3. I want to thank the people of San Francisco for continuing to do their part to save lives. I know this isn’t easy but we will get through it together.

Decades of disinvestment and racially disparate policies have disproportionately hurt our African-American community in SF. Supervisor @ShamannWalton and I will lead the effort to redirect funding from the @SFPD to support the African-American community in the upcoming budget.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg lived an incredible life, breaking barriers and delivering justice. Her passing is a devastating loss for our country. We can honor her life by continuing to fight for a more just society.

I declared a State of Emergency in the Tenderloin to give us the power to move quickly to address the public health crisis on our streets. The Board will vote Thursday on whether to allow that State of Emergency to continue. Here are a couple reasons it's so important:

San Francisco needs change if we are going to fill empty space in Downtown and Union Square. That change includes making our streets safe and clean, and it also includes changing our laws to make it easier to fill vacant spaces, whether that’s office or retail.

Starting February 16 in San Francisco, vaccinated people will no longer be required to wear masks in most indoor settings, including restaurants, bars, gyms, grocery stores, offices, museums, and other locations. The unvaccinated will still be required to wear masks indoors.

Starting Wednesday, anyone hired by the City and County of San Francisco must be vaccinated for COVID before they can start their new job. This builds on our already announced requirement for existing employees.
