Many Bramptonians come from farming families in India & it's been stressful for them to see reaction to the peaceful #FarmersProtests. The recent images from Delhi have been heart breaking. I hope for a peaceful resolution as farmers continue to exercise their democratic rights.

I had a very nice chat with @ImranKhanPTI this evening about politics, democracy, the rule of law & of course cricket.  He served as the 22nd Prime Minister of #Pakistan & based on public opinion would easily win again if elections are permitted. I told him he has a big following in Brampton & Canada. At every Pakistani Canadian event, I hear about how the community is inspired by his resilience and his courage to continue to raise his voice despite assassination attempts.

This was the idiot at the Hindu Sabha last night trying to direct violence against those of Sikh faith. He has a long history of hate and attempting to incite violence. He isn’t from Brampton. He came to the City last night to encourage violence. Agitators trying to incite violence need to be dealt with promptly and swiftly with the full extent of our hate laws. FYI @rcmpgrcpolice @OPP_News @PeelPolice
Hindutwa extremist Ron Banerjee, self proclaimed Executive Director of Hindu Conference of Canada openly demanded killing of Muslims and Sikhs in India, saying “they deserve to die”. Attacks on Sikhs, genocide calls, labeling them terrorists, it all originates from this hatred.

Canada ranks near the bottom of OECD countries when it comes to hospital beds per capita. For context, we had 90% of hospitals beds in use in Canada before the pandemic even started. Why are we not having a national conversation on the inadequacies of our healthcare capacity?

#Brampton City Council has unanimously passed a motion calling on the federal government to require international student visas to include a housing address consistent with local by laws as a component of the approvals process. We can’t have international students living in 3rd world conditions while being used as an ATM for the college they are going to. The current system allows international students to be routinely taken advantage of and is exacerbating the housing crisis. Requiring a housing address as part of the visa approval process would ensure every college has an appropriate housing plan and spur new student housing construction. Enough is enough. It’s time to clean up this broken federal program. @CityBrampton @MikePMoffatt @MarcMillerVM @JillDunlop1

I strongly condemn any acts of violence outside of a place of worship. This video is alarming. No place of worship should have to fear from being attacked. Full stop. This vile man is trying to incite hate and violence. We don’t need this hideousness in Canada. Agitators on both sides need to be arrested and charged for the violence they are trying to incite. We must be better than this in Canada. This is exactly why I am advocating for a prohibition on protests at places of worship.
UPDATE | Videos have emerged of organizers calling on Pro-India protestors to "storm the Sikh temples." The violent Anti-Sikh calls were met with loud and wide cheers by the mob as they flooded into the streets. Police quickly arrived on scene to protect Canadians from violence.

This is leadership that is helpful. The vast majority of Sikh Canadians and Hindu Canadians want to live in harmony and don’t tolerate violence. Hindu Sabha Mandir President Madhusudan Lama has suspended the pundit who spread violent rhetoric. The Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council denounced the acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha on Sunday night. Remember we all have more in common than what divides us. In tense times, we can’t let the agitators fuel the flames of division. The leadership of both Sikh and Hindu communities in the GTA do not want this division, hate and violence. I am asking everyone in the community to not respond to violence and hate. Law enforcement will be there to respond. This is their job. We must continue to be the country where the rule of law is followed.

Auto thefts are the best new cash cow for organized crime in Canada. We can put the brakes on skyrocketing auto thefts with two key steps: 1) Greater inspection of shipping containers. Currently, in Canada, a mere 1% of shipping containers are inspected at our borders. It is time for the Canada Border Services Agency to allocate more resources to shut down criminality at our Ports. GPS tracking of stolen vehicles shows its happening in plain sight. 2) Tougher sentencing on criminals who steal vehicles. Canada has lenient laws and limited penalties for auto-theft. Organized crime knows this and is taking full advantage of it.  Even though auto-theft is the third largest source of revenue for organized crime groups, the criminal code regards it as a low-level property crime. Let’s amend the criminal code and bring in real consequences for this offense. No more slaps on the wrist.

Thank you Mayor @AmarjeetSohiYEG for speaking up against this extortion attack on the Canadian South Asian community. We must stop this international criminal enterprise from terrorizing Canadians from abroad.
It is unacceptable that organized criminals can use fear and violence to extort members of our community. All businesses in Canada deserve to conduct their business without fear and intimidation. I have spoken with my counterparts in the Edmonton Metro Region as it has become clear that this issue is impacting communities across the region as well as across the country. I have written to the federal government requesting immediate action. I was alerted to the troubling rise in extortion calls and arson incidents several weeks ago, and have remained in close contact with the affected businesses and the City of Edmonton has been in contact with their industry associations. I immediately reached out to City Manager Andre Corbould and Chief Dale McFee of the Edmonton Police Service to share concerns, as well as having informal conversations with several Federal officials from different Ministries. It is imperative that we strengthen coordination between all federal, provincial, and municipal law enforcement agencies across Canada. Due to the connection with international organized crime, and the instances of extortion across the country, the federal government must take immediate action and lead a coordinated response. You can read my letter at mayorsohi.ca/advocacy.

I have received numerous calls from residents offended by these comments and hope that Bonnie Crombie will do the right thing and fire this candidate. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Our police were given temporary and limited access at the Port of Montreal. Imagine how many cars they could recover if they were given jurisdiction to inspect shipping containers for stolen vehicles all the time. We had in the range of 30,000 cars stolen in the GTHA last year alone. 80% headed to international markets through the Port of Montreal. Project Vector is unequivocal proof we need scanners at the Port of Montreal and jurisdiction given to law enforcement to inspect. This is the only way to immediately stop the auto theft crisis in central Canada. Everything else is just window dressing.

In the @CityBrampton, we proudly acknowledge Tamil Eelam Flag Day. This flag, which unites Tamil nationals of Eelam worldwide, symbolizes their sovereignty and right to self-determination. It serves as a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices made by the Eelam Tamil community in their struggle for liberation and emancipation. It is also a time to remember the lives lost to the 60 years of the #TamilGenocide. We will continue to stand with the Tamil community in their pursuit of justice & freedom. There is no freedom or equality without justice! #NeverForget

The Rajapaksas' opposition to the Tamil Genocide Memorial is the surest signal that we are on the right path recognizing the innocent civilian lives lost at the hand of this family. If confident no genocide occurred, the Rajapaksa family should fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court rather than obstructing justice and hiding from prosecution. This is their Nuremberg moment and instead of facing accountability, this family hides in luxury protected by the Sri Lankan state. It’s shameful. The crimes against humanity committed by the Rajapaksa family rival Pol Pot, Slobodan Milosevic, Heinrich Himmler, and Flicien Kabuga. It’s a badge of honor that they object to our Canadian Tamil Genocide Memorial.

I’ve heard from many of my constituents in #Brampton, expressing their concerns about the safety of relatives in the #FarmersProtest in India. The fundamental right to peaceful protest is the cornerstone of any democracy. I hope the rights of the protestors are respected.

Yet another reason why we can’t have any delay on the construction of the 2nd Brampton hospital. It was needed in 2007 and the population in 2023 massively overwhelms the existing healthcare infrastructure. We appreciate the significant provincial budget commitment to build a 2nd hospital but we need to see shovels in the ground yesterday! #onpoli @SylviaJonesMPP
PLEASE NOTE: The Urgent Care Centre at Peel Memorial is currently experiencing high patient volumes and wait times to see a physician. Infants six months and younger are advised to visit the nearest Emergency Department. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Today, we mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, commemorating 16 years since the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka in which the government committed a mass genocide against the Tamil people. Many survivors fled and escaped to Canada for safety. We remember the lives lost, the families shattered and the communities forever impacted. We stand with Brampton and Canada’s Tamil community, who continue to carry the weight of this pain and the memory of loved ones. This year holds special significance as Brampton is now home to the Tamil Genocide Memorial Monument – a powerful symbol of remembrance. The monument stands as a reminder of the past and a call to action for a future built on truth, accountability and peace. We hope for a day when the Rajapaksa regime’s war criminals are finally held accountable for their crimes against humanity. Let us honour the victims by committing ourselves to justice, to remembrance, and to standing together in solidarity — today and always. @ncctonline @CityBrampton

Thanks to the new Ontario long term care policy allowing outdoor visits again, I was able to introduce my 107 year grandmother Teresa Brown to my daughter Savannah for the first time. It was priceless to see her reaction & wonderful to see Teresa in person again. A good day!
