The past two years have been the best. I’ve enjoyed the freedom to travel with my family and (assistant) coach my son’s Little League teams, all while continuing to try to help some of the founders and companies I’ve worked with over the past decade.
These two years have confirmed that I love hanging out with my family … and it’s really fun to spend time with amazing, ambitious, impatient entrepreneurs.
We are living through the most exciting technological change of our lifetime (of anyone’s lifetime?). We are on the cusp of having an infinite supply of intelligence. We can literally just convert electricity into intelligence.
It’s hard to sit that one out.
I have known Sarah Guo for years. She’s one of the smartest, hardest-working, most connected and admired investors out there. Founders love her.
Over the past two years, she and the team at Conviction have built one of the most exciting new firms in years. In just two years they have partnered with @harvey_ai, @MistralAI, @SierraPlatform, @cognition_labs, @HeyGen_Official, @cartesia and more. That’s pretty good. In a short period, Sarah and Pranav have emerged as the partners of choice for AI-native companies.
Even more impressive than the track record is the ethos, ambition and culture of the firm (sarahguo.com/blog/conviction).
At Conviction, we are building a small, hands-on team that deeply understands the technological revolution that is underway, that can serve as a connector between the builders at the center of it and that has the patience, independence and conviction to take an extremely long-term perspective.
And it’s fun to be back at a startup! There are cardboard boxes everywhere and a random humanoid robot hanging out in the kitchen. The most fun I’ve had in my working career was the early, fast-scaling days at Facebook – it’s fun to be back.
I have been fortunate to work with some amazing teams and founders over the past decade (thank you!). Luckily I’ll continue to work with a few – @getcaptionsapp, @clay_gtm, @NotionHQ, @Rippling, @Statsig – for the rest, please don’t be a stranger.
I am grateful to Sarah, Pranav, Christy, Niki and Vivian for welcoming me in and trusting me to be part of the team.
And lastly and most importantly, I am so grateful to my wife and my kids who have hung out with me for the past two years and have been supportive of this new journey.

I think @wabi is pretty clearly where the world is going.
The Internet caused the barbell-ification of a lot industries – Retail (Amazon & Shopify merchants), News (NYT & Substack writers), Media (Netflix & TikTok creators), etc.
I think AI will do the same for apps and software development more generally (both in the enterprise and in consumer). A small # of platforms will become more powerful and "app" creation will become radically democratized.
Wabi feels like exactly this. I can just create an animal guessing game for me and my kids to play live.

Bella is all of those things – a Stanford CS graduate who was recruited by her professor (@alexstamos – ty for the referral!) to his cybersecurity firm and who later joined Bridgewater to figure out how AI will revolutionize investing.
Our friend @gradypb often talks about looking for people that are "competitive with a heart of gold." That's the perfect description of Bella – she was an All-American D1 athlete, a top student, an intense grinder (in the best way), but also a great friend and coworker. Venture done best is a service profession, and it's clear a core motivation of hers is to help others.

If you're still noodling ideas, one thing I've been thinking about is reasoning-based vertical apps.
Two years ago, we discovered this alien-technology API that lets you ask questions and get (reasonably) fast, smart answers. Most of the successful apps built so far – the vertical copilots, the customer-support agents, etc. – wrap this synchronous, request-response API with some domain-specific UI and information retrieval.
One exception is Devin, which has been exploring what the UI should be for long-lived, complex work. And OpenAI is now exploring similar UIs with Operator and DeepResearch.
What does Devin look like for other industries? How do you harness 50 smart interns in sales, marketing, finance, design and the like? I think there'll probably be some interesting vertical apps that are built around managing a team of smart AI interns in various domains. They'll leverage the underlying reasoning models but adapted for function- or industry-specific workflows.

I am always surprised when VCs fixate on gross margins for AI companies. The rate of price-performance improvement is so much higher than Moore's Law that it seems clear that the market will just "solve" any non-insane GM problems relatively quickly?
I keep wondering about what kind of products you could build if you were willing to spend ~$1k-10k/month per user on computational intelligence. It seems impossible to even contemplate building those if you're only charging $20/month but it also seems like those products will probably *cost* $20/month within a couple of years, assuming continued improvements and some minor optimization.

I think you have to believe that (a) historically software has not created much value for the legal industry (change tracking, databases, etc. – but nothing transformative) and (b) text-based intelligence unlocks a huge amount of value creation for lawyers (and value capture for the provider).
Adobe's creative business is arguably vertical SaaS that does >$13B ARR serving creative professionals. Adobe's products clearly create way more value than traditional legal tech or ServiceTitan (even though ServiceTitan is great!). How much value will tools like Harvey create in the legal world? I think closer to Adobe than traditional solutions.
