CEO @SkydioHQ - largest US drone manufacturer and world leader in autonomous flight. Working to make drones useful infrastructure for civilization.

San Mateo, CA
The robots are here and they fly. Today at Ascend, we announced: • R10 - a breakthrough indoor drone that uses AI and autonomy to get into the most dangerous places so people don’t have to. • F10 - a prototype Robotic Takeoff and Land (RTOL) drone that will unlock long-range, long-endurance, high-speed missions. It will eventually put all the landmass on Earth within reach of an autonomous, Docked drone. Imagine having all of our transportation and energy networks instantly accessible, or being able to get eyes on scene for every emergency, any natural disaster, immediately, anywhere. • Continued evolution of our AI software to make X10 multi-drone native so one operator can command many drones, and the robots work for us rather than the other way around. • Myriad other improvements to our hardware and software to make them more capable, more reliable, and more useful, for more people. This is a special moment as drones transition from being useful tools to critical infrastructure for our most critical industries. It is an immense challenge - and a true joy - to develop this technology and deploy it in service of the most important customers in the world. And we’ve now got a whole Family of Flying Robots to meet the need. I’m so proud of our team at Skydio for pulling off the impossible. You can watch the full keynote in the link below, or just check out these sick highlights of the Cybertruck-mounted robot arm snatching F10 out of the air, R10 flying through <10” gaps with ease, and X10s going off out of Docks like fireworks.

Good news: San Mateo weather was horrendous on Thursday, with heavy rain and gusts up to 60MPH. When the going gets tough, Madison Taylor and our awesome Product Integrity team DIAL UP our automated flight testing, not down. We had an overall success rate of 167/168 flights in terrible conditions in one day from our @SkydioHQ Dock Hive. The single crash landing was the first we’ve had in real-world conditions (wind was way above our recommended flight spec). We’re looking into it now and believe there are further SW improvements that would mitigate the issue. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: the wind is so stiff the hard-mounted security camera filming this video is shaking. The drone's autonomy system is using computer vision to stay locked onto the Dock in spite of the rain, while the control system is estimating and adapting to the wind in realtime. It intentionally times its landing for a lower wind and higher alignment moment.

Indeed. With drones it's typically pretty easy to imagine and even demo the concept (drone delivery, drone respond to 911 call, drone follows/films) and hundreds of companies have. Very few have made these things actually work reliably, and even fewer have built actual businesses around them.
Making a video of a robot doing something once and then posting to the internet is extremely easy. Making something that operates in the real world reliably is hard and unfancy. One example: using fog machines and cold to stress test flying in icing conditions at test site

Absolutely astounding. As impressive as Zipline is, I think it's still underappreciated how impactful they will be and how big of a lead they have compared to others trying to do similar stuff.
On Tue we flew a total of 20,897 km (12,985 mi) in operations in one day. New record!  That is the equivalent of more than 1/2 way around the circumference of the Earth in one day.  To be clear - this is not counting test operations.

Today @SkydioHQ launches Dock for X10, a product that completes the vision of autonomous drones doing useful work to keep our communities safer, keep the lights on, and help protect our national security. Drones should work for you - responding to emergencies, inspecting critical infrastructure, and helping people do their jobs better - and with Dock for X10 they do. You can place them wherever critical work happens and a single operator can fly and manage the entire fleet remotely. Dock for X10 is the ultimate automated data capture platform. skydio.com/blog/dock-for-x10… There is A LOT of amazing technology under the hood, and we had a lot of fun with live demos during the keynote, including completing missions in 30mph winds and rain on stage. But the thing I’m most excited about is the end-to-end solutions Dock for X10 unlocks, especially for public safety. Drone as First Responder is a transformative concept and Dock for X10 makes it scalable and accessible for any agency. On top of Dock for X10, we’ve developed DFR Command, the ultimate software suite to run a DFR program from inception through scale. skydio.com/blog/announcing-s… We're already seeing our customers accomplishing incredible things while reshaping their industries in the process. We can’t wait to see how they will put Skydio to work next.

Dock for X10 is now generally available, along with a brand new X10 Gen 2. We’re building a tidal wave of these puppies to meet the demand and take a big step towards drones becoming basic infrastructure for the core industries our civilization runs on. In this video, we get into all the new stuff we’ve built to make the product sweet. Our customers have completed over 13,000 Dock-based missions across the US and Japan during beta deployment, and the impact is already mind blowing – public safety agencies are changing outcomes daily, from saving lives to catching criminals and thwarting crimes in progress; utility operators are automating inspections and detecting anomalies before they become catastrophes; our service members are strengthening site security and response to potential threats. And we're just getting started. Together with our customers, we’re building towards an awesome future of autonomous flying robots doing useful work on our behalf.

America has always had air superiority, but in future conflicts air superiority = drone superiority, and we have work to do as a country to regain the advantage. Super simple, super powerful use case from @USArmy and @USNationalGuard - using Skydio X2D to aim and correct artillery fire. This force multiplier accelerates kill chains and cuts reaction times. With it, artillery teams can ensure every round counts. More lethal. Less collateral. 🚨Battery Update🚨 I’m happy to share that we are on track to begin shipping new batteries for X10/X10D in June. The rationing plan we were forced to adopt late last year - one battery for each drone we ship - has been extremely painful for our customers. Despite this pain, the overwhelming support has been humbling and motivating. We just finished one of our largest sales quarters ever. We are grateful for your trust. We will chew through the backlog as fast as we can, but it will take a couple of months. We will prioritize customers who have been waiting the longest for the full complement of batteries before we begin shipping new orders with full sets. I know this sucks. We appreciate your patience. Our @SkydioHQ supply chain and engineering teams have done extraordinary work, and it’s very likely that our new batteries will actually offer increased performance.

The urgency and impact of Drone as First Responder is so high that it’s fairly common for DFR training sessions right after a dock is installed to become actual missions. That’s exactly what happened here at @MiamiBeachPD. After a reported battery on Ocean Drive, the MBPD operator responded using DFR Command to send X10 to the scene and search for the suspect. Based on the description provided by witnesses, the pilot quickly located the individual and helped guide officers on the ground to her location, where she was apprehended without incident. Never a dull moment at Skydio or for our customers. We have several open roles on DFR training, deployment, and support teams. skydio.com/careers

Pretty awesome DFR Summit at @SkydioHQ. Together with @AxonRick and @axon_enterprise, we hosted 100+ Law Enforcement leaders from around the country at our R&D headquarters and manufacturing facility. Everyone got hands-on flying drones while also seeing under the hood how we design, build, and test these systems. The most exciting part for me was hearing the incredible impact stories from agencies that are up and flying Skydio DFR now. The map of deployments across the U.S. is getting denser every day :) Most importantly, we heard invaluable, direct feedback on everything we’re working on to make DFR more useful and more accessible. Send me a DM if you or your agency is interested in attending events like this in the future.

I went to Asheville this week and saw firsthand the enormous value drones can provide in hurricane recovery. Spurred on by Chief Michael Lamb, Captain Brandon Moore, and @AshevillePolice leadership, the drone industry response was incredible. I was especially impressed by the work of the @DroneSense team coordinating efforts and staffing central operations, and of course, the dozens of agencies that showed up to do whatever was needed. Unfortunately, the need may be even higher in Florida this week. As Florida braces for the impact of Hurricane Milton, we are sending a major contingent of Skydians - spanning product, engineering, SE, CSM, and executives - with appropriate equipment to help with the response. If you are impacted by this storm and @SkydioHQ can help, please DM me. flyingmag.com/news/responder…

Random tip: sometimes laptop power supplies shutdown airplane outlets because they have capacitors that draw extra current when they're plugged in. If you repeatedly unplug and replug the power supply, it will charge up the capacitor, and eventually not shut down the outlet.

The X10 platform recently crossed the 500,000-flight mark – a big milestone in total usage. And these are high-stakes flights. Our customers rely on X10 to keep the lights on, keep their communities safe, and protect our nation. We know it needs to work every time, and this is why reliability is our number one priority. Any time an aerospace asset - rocket, jetliner, private plane, helicopter, drone, or anything in between - goes in the air there is some risk. We are relentlessly focused on minimizing all of the risks under our control, while also transparently communicating what we believe the risk profile to be based on our best information. Transparency is important for a lot of reasons, but the primary one is that our customers often fly lifesaving missions and they are in the best position to manage and judge the impact and risk tradeoffs for their operations. Two examples of our posture on this are our history of Notice to Operators (NTOs) and our cloud uptime dashboard (status.skydio.com/history). With transparency in mind, I will share a very recent incident. Last night, we found out about a crash from an X10 Dock Beta deployment. Within the last 24 hours we’ve conducted a rapid investigation which has concluded with high confidence that battery connector wear is the root cause of the vehicle crash. We have seen instances of this kind of wear in extreme, high-stress internal testing, but this is the first known customer-facing instance of this issue after hundreds of thousands of X10 flights. Of note, this crash also led to the battery being ejected and ultimately catching fire. The fire was quickly put out with a fire extinguisher and there was no property damage outside of the X10. We do not believe the battery ejection and subsequent fire was related to the battery connector issue that led to the crash. Any lithium polymer battery cells are at risk of fire if the cells are punctured, but our internal testing involves drop tests of our batteries from up to 60 feet and we have not seen fires from this testing or any other incidents with X10. We published an NTO today for customers who want more detail. Within the last 24 hours, we have identified a telemetry signature for vehicles showing early warning signs of this failure mode so that preventive measures can be taken. Skydio Customer Support is now monitoring analytics for our entire online fleet of customer X10s and will proactively contact anyone operating X10s with signatures of excessive battery connector wear. We are also investigating adding alerting of the issue into products so customers will directly know when products need attention.

Dock landing reliability update: since announcing Dock at Ascend we’ve done tens of thousands of flights in day, night, rain, and wind all over the country in all kinds of environments, including our worst-case internal stress testing rigs. We have yet to see any landing failures in real-world conditions. The only failures we’ve been able to generate have been in our worst-case stress rigs, and none of them were actual crashes. All of them would have been recovered by the operator telling the drone to take off and land again. Combining real-world flying (no failures) and stress testing, we’re at 99.8% landing reliability. The level of infrastructure, technology, and overall investment that goes into driving this kind of reliability for a robotic system is nuts. Super proud of the work our teams are doing here. (If working on cutting-edge flying robotic systems that save people’s lives is appealing, come work at @SkydioHQ!) The testing rig runs automatically, continuously, in the background, all the time (I’m listening to it buzz right now 🙂). Video of *all* the failures as well as a few of the successes on the latest version of our software.

Last time I went to a playoff game with my dad (2001 game 7 vs. the Kings) they ended up winning it all. Good luck?

Not quite smart enough to tell the difference between this @LiamPayne cutout (that it's tracking) and a real person though.

Interestingly our reservation rate has increased since the Mavic Mini was announced, in spite of a long wait time for new reservation placers.

Sending immense gratitude and support to the countless individuals across public safety, energy utilities, critical infrastructure, and disaster relief who sprung to action in the devastating wake of Hurricane Helene. Skydio has had teams working around the clock to assist in response efforts throughout the Southeast. We’ve got boots on the ground across Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, and surrounding states and we’re surging drones to areas most in need. One example - when Skydian and @CityofAsheville local Brian Doherty asked for help, colleagues near (Rachael Foster) and far (Matt Boerwinkle) immediately hit the road to aid @AshevillePolice @AshevilleFD in SAR efforts. And because the storm has significantly impacted many area bridges, this team is also working with the City Engineer to conduct inspections and create digital twins to help determine bridge safety and expedite the repair process. In moments like these, regardless of your status as a customer, @SkydioHQ is here to help. Please send me a DM if there’s anything we can do to assist your agency with recovery and damage assessment.

Btw this photo of the @OlinCollege Presidential Search Committee from our announcement of the new President was taken with a @SkydioHQ 2 aerial drone - inside the Board Room (don’t tell OSHA.) No walls, ceilings, or windows were harmed in the making of this photo.

The wildest use of Skydio R1's Car Follow feature yet courtesy of @MarkFreeman408 — maybe we need a Ramp cinematic skill? 🤔

DJI's products are being used to harm Ukrainians & yet they refuse to stop selling to Russia. This is a wakeup call to everyone using their products & a key moment for drone companies in democratic countries to step up & lead the future of the industry. theverge.com/22985101/dji-ae…
In 21 days of the war, russian troops has already killed 100 Ukrainian children. they are using DJI products in order to navigate their missile. @DJIGlobal are you sure you want to be a partner in these murders? Block your products that are helping russia to kill the Ukrainians!

2022: 1 active pilot, 1 drone used for search and rescue missions Today: 12 active pilots with 3 drones in service 24/7 conducting SAR, fugitive apprehension operations, large event overwatch, perimeter security, traffic flow monitoring, and daily officer safety support functions. The evolution of the @FlaglerSheriff UAS program under the leadership of Cmdr. Jon Dopp and Sgt. Jorge Fuentes has been extraordinary. Excited to see what’s next as this team continues charting the course to DFR in “Main Street, USA”.

The ability to see what’s happening on the ground and not be noticed matters for Drone as First Responder operations. One way to achieve this is with a big, heavy, noisy drone that must fly at a very high altitude to not be noticed. A better way to achieve it is with a smaller, quieter, safer drone that can fly at any altitude and is inaudible at much lower altitudes. Data usually rules the day on this stuff, so we put X10 to the test against the DJI M300, a common alternative considered for DFR operations. Result? The X10 does not rise above ambient sound at 200 feet. In contrast, the M300 is 55% louder at the same altitude, and it’s also unavoidably *much* louder at takeoff and landing. Every 3 dB is a doubling of energy. When the DJI M300 emits 50.6 dB, the X10 registers just 48.7 dB - that 1.9 dB gap represents a 55% increase in sound intensity. For critical calls or tense situations, excess sound can compromise officer safety. One more reason why smaller is better for DFR.

Awesome to be back in Boston this week for @TheIACP #IACP2024 Annual Conference. With DFR Command, X10, Dock for X10, Skydio Connect Fusion, and, of course, @SkydioHQ Autonomy, the Drone as First Responder vision is now a scalable reality. Designing and engineering all of this stuff together in an integrated fashion, and then manufacturing all of it right here in the U.S. is a lot of work… which may be why no one else has done it. It’s not the easiest approach, but it’s the right approach to deliver a scalable, trustworthy, reliable solution. Demoing the product live from the roof of @BostonFire (thank you for the hospitality!) to leaders from dozens of agencies was a phenomenal experience - both seeing their reaction to the tech and, more importantly, hearing from them about how this will keep their officers and communities safer. The momentum around DFR in public safety is simply astounding and the next 12 months will be incredibly exciting. Source: @NBC10Boston
