Traveling to the Dominican Republic this week, having an Apple AirTag in my luggage completely saved my trip from being ruined after my bag was stolen from the airport.
Just before getting to my transportation, a police officer called me over to go through my backpack which had over $20,000 of camera gear and equipment in it. I was laser focused on his moves as he asked for my permits to have a drone, which I don’t need to have in The DR.
Was it a bad idea to travel with all of this gear? Maybe. But it was necessary for the job that I had taken.
After 5 minutes of negotiations with all of my gear finally packed away, I went to grab my bag with clothes and it was no where to be found.
I immediately jumped on the Find My app and it began updating its location up the highway. I was panicking that the battery would die with how much I was checking the location, so I swiftly pivoted to rent a car and follow the AirTag’s trace.
After I saw its location settle in a parking lot, I walked between the cars trying to get a connection. I eventually found it in the back of a Toyota. The trunk was unlocked, I grabbed the bag and ran.
This is the first time I’ve had to use an AirTag to find my belongings, and I’m really happy that I have one in all of my bags that I travel with. Now I just need to replace the battery when I’m home 😂
