Last night at @UCBerkeley, Jewish students were threatened, assaulted, and prevented from attending a speech by a Jewish speaker on campus. Campus police shut down this private event when it became clear that they could not protect the students. Multiple students reported being spat on, screamed at, called derogatory names like "dirty Jew" or "you Jew," and physically assaulted by protestors. Jewish students deserve to navigate their lives without fear, and it is crucial that there are significant repercussions for those hindering this goal, including the responsible organizations and individuals. Ultimately, the UC Berkeley administration bears the responsibility of ensuring the safety of Jewish students on campus, a duty that was not fulfilled last night.

WATCH: On Saturday, a Jewish man and his five-old-son were directed across the street to Jerusalem Coffee House in Oakland while looking for a restroom. After purchasing drinks and sitting down, the cafe owner confronted the man about the Star of David on his hat, stating it was violent and demanded to know if he was a Zionist. When the man asked what that had to do with anything, the owner insisted he leave. Later, when asking if the establishment did not allow Jews, the man was told they “might not." The rise in antisemitic incidents in Oakland since October 7 is alarming and out of control. This incident stands as one of the most blatant acts of discrimination, and we call on our leaders to take a stand against such behavior and speak out NOW. 30+ Jewish families have pulled their children from Oakland Unified School District since October. Now a federal investigation into four alleged incidents of anti-Jewish bias has been opened by the Department of Education: - A Palestinian flag flying from the flagpole in front of Fremont High School in November - The December 6 teach-in on Palestine which included lessons such as "I is for Intifada" - A middle school administrator making inflammatory social media posts about Zionists - A middle school teacher allegedly putting up a “From the River to the Sea” poster in his class These are not isolated incidents. JCRC regularly receives dozens of reports of Jewish students feeling unsafe in Bay Area schools. We are concerned for the safety and belonging of our Jewish students. oaklandside.org/2024/01/25/p…

Last night, under the cover of an anti-ICE protest, agitators forcibly entered and vandalized @welcometomannys, a beloved Jewish-owned civic engagement hub and community space. This wasn't an isolated incident; @manny_yekutiel and his establishment have been subjected to a years-long campaign of relentless antisemitic vandalism, which has increased in intensity since October 7th. Broken windows, death threats, and slurs like "Zio," "settler," and "murderer" scrawled on his business's walls are some of the most recent examples. We unequivocally condemn this lawless destruction of property and violent rhetoric, which is part of a disturbing rise in the targeting of Jewish individuals and institutions. We know where this can lead: we've seen it manifest in violent antisemitic attacks in places like D.C. and Boulder. Antisemitism has no place in our society, and its presence, particularly at demonstrations meant to promote justice and welcome the stranger, undermines the very values such movements claim to uphold.

We are deeply concerned that anti-Israel groups have now turned their attention to target the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, @HillelIntl, a safe haven and foundation for Jewish students for over 100 years. The calls initially began with SJP demanding @UCSC cut ties to Jewish charities and institutions including Hillel as part of ending their encampment. Now there are calls for universities nationwide to drop Hillel. Hillel serves as a hub for Jewish life on campus, offering a range of programming, events, and resources to engage Jewish students in their cultural, religious, and social identities. They provide opportunities for both Jewish and non-Jewish students to connect with each other, celebrate holidays, participate in community service, explore their heritage, and deepen their understanding of Judaism. Hillel is represented across 850 North American campuses and communities. It is the largest collective of Jewish students on Earth. Calling on universities to cut ties with the majority of their Jewish students is blatantly antisemitic. It denies them of resources, community, freedom of expression and undermines diversity and inclusion.

PROTESTORS ATTACK JEWISH EDUCATOR’S EVENT ON COMBATTING ANTISEMITISM On Wednesday, May 8, protestors attacked attendees of a private event hosted by Jewish author and educator Debbie Lechtman (Roots Metals) in Oakland. The event, hosted on Holocaust Remembrance Day, was a talk on antisemitism, and was not focused on Israel. Attendees allege they were followed, called “disgusting Jewish pigs” and were hit with glass bottles filled with fake blood leading to cuts, head injuries and clothing stains. Targeting anyone because of their identity is wrong. The mob-style intimidation tactics displayed by these protestors is a stark reminder of the pervasive and insidious nature of hate and antisemitism. The event organizers have informed the Oakland Police Department and FBI, and an incident report has been filed. We are disgusted by these vile and antisemitic actions. Last night, the @SFHillel House, a block from the @SFSU campus, was vandalized with antisemitic graffiti, and the perpetrators attempted to break in. The graffiti referenced 'Khaybar,' a historic region in 7th-century Arabia where a battle between Muslims and Jews resulted in the mass expulsion and slaughter of the Jewish community. This deeply problematic reference not only shifts the complex Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a religious battle between Islam and Judaism but also carries an implicit threat of armed violence or forcible expulsion against Jews today. Let's be clear: the phrase “From the river to the sea” is an antisemitic call for the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state. Thank you, Mayor Arreguin, for taking a firm stance against antisemitism in our Berkeley community and leading with resilience. With the explosion of hate speech against Jews, we urge other public officials follow your lead in condemning antisemitism in all of its forms.
I am outraged over the hateful and deeply antisemitic behavior we saw at Tuesday’s Council meeting. Heckling people including Holocaust survivors, then co-opting its message for an anti-Jewish agenda, threats and hate speech will not be tolerated. We will not be intimidated.

Toxic, hostile, xenophobic… no student should be subject to harassment by their faculty because of their nationality.
The same UCSF professor who promoted the “doctors’ plot” — an age old antisemitic conspiracy theory that Jewish doctors are harming patients — is now targeting a 1st year med student for harassment b/c he’s Israeli. This professor is creating a toxic, hostile environment at UCSF

This brazen display of antisemitism is absolutely unacceptable. Targeting the local Jewish community, some of whom have no personal ties to Israel, is unjust and should be unequivocally condemned. We urge a comprehensive investigation into this matter and stand together against hatred.
Smitten, a Jewish-owned ice creamery on Valencia Street, was vandalized last night. Several windows were smashed and one was tagged with pro-Palestinian graffiti. It remains unclear whether the vandalism will be investigated as a hate crime. missionlocal.org/2023/10/smi…

A sign at the anti-Israel encampment at @UCSC calls for "death to Israelis" and praises a Hamas militant. Abu Obaida is the war name of the spokesperson for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, and has become an "icon" in their online propaganda videos. There is no question that this unacceptable rhetoric is hate speech and must not be allowed on our college campuses.

You'd have to be out of your mind to think the top prosecutor in San Francisco could be "bought off" with a $17 bottle of wine. This is just an attempt to distract from the fact that actions like blocking bridges have consequences.
Why is the San Francisco District Attorney accepting gifts from the Israeli government? One of the gifts was accepted THREE days before charging Bay Bridge protestors. The SFDA has gone on to charge some protestors who shut down the Golden Gate Bridge with *felonies*. The DA’s office is clearly biased & cannot proceed with this case which is clearly politically motivated.

Shame on @CAIRCalifornia and @JVPBayArea for being the only orgs lobbying against SB 1277, a bill that would expand Holocaust & genocide education in our schools. This bill is essential to ensure schools meet their requirement to teach about the Holocaust. There is no debate.
CAIR and JVP are lobbying against a new bill to establish a committee for Holocaust and genocide education in California schools because of the influence of "pro-Israel organizations."

This incident follows the destruction of the menorah at the same location last year and a pattern of ongoing antisemitic vandalism. Thank you to the local community member who cleaned this up immediately.

Fliers calling for a boycott of six Jewish eateries have been posted in various commercial areas in San Francisco, raising safety concerns for these businesses and the Jewish community. Jews are being scapegoated for events overseas. And small business owners should not face collective punishment. This form of antisemitism is growing and deeply alarming to us. @KTVU

No Confidence: UC Berkeley Leadership Failing Jews on Campus Over the past 48 hours, we have seen a profound failure of leadership from @UCBerkeley. Chancellor Carol Christ’s statement appeasing encampment leaders failed to address the Jewish community's urgent concerns about safety amid violent incidents, singled out Israel-based programs and travel, denied the harm that antisemitic rhetoric and chants have had on Jewish students and faculty, and made no mention of the horrors of Hamas' October 7 attack nor the ongoing hostage crisis in Gaza. Moreover, Christ's negotiations have not led to peace on campus. Instead, the situation has escalated into a takeover of Anna Head Alumnae Hall, which is now vandalized with antisemitic graffiti. This situation echoes the lawlessness we witnessed at Columbia University and further threatens Jewish students and faculty at UC Berkeley. We call on the UC Board of Regents to take swift action amid this leadership vacuum to restore order to campus, and safety for Jewish campus life. 🚨 @HouseCommerce Opens Investigation into Antisemitism Crisis at @UCSF The House Energy and Commerce Committee letter to the University of California, San Francisco chancellor underscores how antisemitic incidents are harming the UCSF community and threatening the reputation of this premier institution. We have heard from many Jewish patients that they feel unsafe receiving care at the institution. Jewish doctors, nurses and staff should not have to suffer an openly hostile work environment. We hope this will be a wake-up call for the administration and lead to decisive steps to ensure everyone feels safe at the hospital and medical school. Hundreds of incidents have been reported, including: ➡️ UCSF employees asserting that patients should fear Jewish doctors ➡️ Chants of "intifada" by students and faculty in hospital facilities ➡️ Nurses donning "Free Palestine" pins while treating patients ➡️ Jewish healthcare professionals fearing for their safety and exposure of private information ➡️ Statements that Israelis in the U.S., including students at U.S. universities and medical schools, who have served with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) should be tried for war crimes Read the letter: d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.ne…

The targeting of @BerkeleyLaw's Jewish dean has sunk to a despicable level of antisemitism. Outside Dean Chemerinsky's home, activists protest, falsely accusing him of enabling @BerkeleyLaw to invest in Israel. In truth, the dean has no authority over UC investments and is solely targeted because of his identity.
Berkeley alumni and students are continuing to protest outside the home of Erwin Chemerinsky and Catherine Fisk:

We reject the International Criminal Court's charges against Israel's leaders as absurd. However you feel about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the way this war has been waged under his watch, it is false, misleading and reprehensible to draw any moral equivalence between his leadership and that of the Hamas leaders who led a savage and indiscriminate massacre of innocent civilians. reuters.com/world/middle-eas…

Replying to @StopAntisemites
Watch what else happened last night. Our Jewish students are hurting.
WATCH: Last night, during a forum with Stanford University's leadership meant to address the rise of antisemitism on campus, demonstrators outside shouted "go back to Brooklyn!," "Zionists you can't hide!" and "Israel will fall!" Jewish students on campus are already experiencing heightened feelings of insecurity. It is unjust and antisemitic to attribute to them responsibility for the conflict in the Middle East.
