January 7, 1995... I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. one day at a time... I choose a life of sobriety, free from drugs and alcohol. Today marks 28 years clean and sober.
I understand the blockchain is newish... but I'm literally sitting on twitter space... & people talking like OMG this is just happening for the first time. Its frustrating the lack of actual history is sad. MoMa, Whitney, Ars & countless others have been supporting digital art...
yesterday I made a comment about how I'm not a fan of making generative art look like paint... or pencil... or watercolor... or any other analog art utensil. I think the tools should embrace the medium and not pretend to be anything else...
thanks for reaching out yesterday... I'm still in studio making shit... pain gonna have to chill... I got shit to do... taking Gabapentin 3 times a day... MRI on the 15th... just pushing through some severe nerve pain on my right side... neck to skull. Just dumb old guy shit.
I know I do this every year... but it's important to me... yesterday, January 7th (1995) 24 years clean and sober... which remarkably, means I've been alcohol and drug free for half my life (bonkers). One day at a time.
GM. I've been making digital art since 95. I've done this when all I had was $6 in my account. if you're passionate about the medium & the process. nothing else really matters. You'll love the work whether NFT's exist or not... & certainly if the $ exists or not. love your work.
also grateful to be making work just to make work... heading off to Aspen Colorado for a week to teach a creative coding workshop on processing to laser cut paper... gonna be a lot of this over the next few days.
Omega Code / 2008 / Generative Vector coding rendered to PostScript via ActionScript / this generated work has 73,655 vector objects with 403,627 vector points. this is why we love creative coding.
good morning @OFFFest come find my secret room “the V01D” I have 100 new unique posters to give away curtesy of @HP and the new DesignJet Z9. chill and watch the audio reactive visualization by myself and @kurtnullandvoid
if you're new or interested in using creative coding to make art and animation using @ProcessingOrg / my discord / discord.gg/DMtMdnxtB9 / has a VIDEO TUTORIAL section which can help you get started. Great for doing things like this artblocks.io/project/133/gal…
so glad to be able to chat with everyone yesterday... it meant a lot... on the mend with the healing powers of Justin Bieber. I chatted with old and new friends... bought some art... and holding back some great new news coming soon.
They say never meet your heros. Thankfully I'm not good at listening. thanks to @espiekermann I got a chance to meet my hero. Vaughan Oliver's work at 4AD made me want to be a graphic designer. I'm so grateful to have met him and very sad that we've lost him. Vaughan Oliver RIP
Happy New Year from NYC. spoiler alert... I'm gonna keep making weird shit with code. thanks to family, friends and patrons for making 2021 an epic adventure. looking forward to the 2022 journey.
thank you to everyone who participated in my genesis drop "Organized Disruption" on @artblocks_io With 25% being donated... I am thrilled to be sending 68 ETH / $221,418.88 USD to the @ProcessingOrg foundation. Happy 20th Birthday Processing! etherscan.io/tx/0x274805d4fe…
sooooooo... linux mint cinnamon... is my new jam... bye bye OSX. (61 FPS, processing sketches on a razer blade from 2016, which is running 3200x1800 resolution, oh yeah and its also touch... insert surprised emoji face)
what can I tell you after 23 years of sobriety?
1. Shit happens.
2. It's often better to listen than to speak.
3. Hard work always works out.
4. It's easier to be yourself.. but know when to get out of your own way.
5. Kindness is greater than Ego.
...for decades. Museums have been collecting and supporting digital art and installations since easily as early as 98? 01? I literally talked about AI art at my TED talk in 2005. Just because It's happening for you now in 2023... if you don't know the actual history... maybe...
this is @CaballeroAnaMa reporting live from Joshua's phone to announce he just sold out ORBIT OF INFLUENCE on @fx_hash_ bc he's too busy fanboying @p1xelfool to tweet.
Excited to hear my reserve has been met for my work at Christie's/ nft.christies.com/nft/the-v0… / where I'm pairing a generative rendered NFT paired with a hand painted canvas. Winning bid gets both assets. Humbled to have this opportunity. Thank you @sebastianss527 @chennycheeto ♥️
...don't make up a history that isn't based in reality. Maybe take the time to look at what @rhizome has been doing since 1996 FFS. Or @whitneymuseum ArtPort 2001 to 2006 artport.whitney.org/v2/gatep… OR @ArsElectronica since 1987. and it's not like we don't have the internet...
FINALLY the legend @JoshuaDavis will be featured by @ChristiesInc, a landmark moment for all things generative, but especially the most deserved celebration of a man who has given everything to this space since the beginning of all things web/digital.

how it's going ? / the Universe Machine can generate 116 unique system patterns / maps 56,000 textures / loads in 9 to 11 seconds / dreams in 9 color sets / here's how it feels about teal
every time I see someone write "my team" I sit back in my chair... Like a graceful wizard... In a darkened room filled with whirling computers and dark magic... and realize... I'm alone... by myself. Fuck I've been doing this wrong... I want a team. How do I get a team? 🧙♂️
I'm so excited for @liasomething and her @artblocks_io happening today!!! There's no question she was the match that lit my passion for using code to create work... some 25 years ago!!! so happy for this moment for her and her dedication to this art form.
excited for tomorrow... not sure how I'm gonna sleep tonight... here's some @fx_hash_ Orbit of Influence variations rendered in lilac. fxhash.xyz/generative/26592 click "variations" and "open" . can't wait to see and share mints and reveals tomorrow. GN

it took some digging... But I wanted to try to find my very @ProcessingOrg sketch on my hard drive. Here's mine from 2010... Which I used for the @OFFFest book cover. Search .PDE and sort by date... would love to see images/video from your first processing sketch.
Thank you London and @W1curates what a wonderful opening night and thank you to everyone who came by and saw the show... If you missed last night's opening party the outside and Inside experience can be visited the entire month of April.
the Giza Pyramid Complex / quilt collab with @LibsElliott with whom I've spent well over a decade porting some code into a format she can use for pattern making / fxhash.xyz/generative/0xc79a… the collection ends in less than 24 hours. @fx_hash_
For the past 26 years making digital art... I never thought I'd see the day I'd be in a @ChristiesInc auction. Thank you @yesladypheOnix and team. I'm truly humbled at the opportunity to share a bit of my experience, strength and hope for the creative coding community.
Quick health update. I thought last night was it. went to the ER. after a sonogram & cat scan. discovered my gallbladder was filled with sludge and stones & I had an infection & stones stuck towards my pancreas. 3 incisions in my chest & this was cleared & gallbladder removed...
We have reached an unprecedented level of quality for AI generated portraits. Promt: foggy beach landscape, blurred, ravenous gaze wearing glasses with light reflections in glass, psychotic 8K portraiture, beetlejuice prison fashion, and serious fancy ass beard, hint of tattoos.
thrilled to finally announce: I've been invited to participate in my 4th showing at @ChristiesInc in the upcoming Christie's 3.0 NFT Auction: NEXT WAVE - THE NEW YORK EDIT April 12-19, with my piece "the V01D / 027-007" A generative NFT paired with a hand painted canvas.
just left the neurologist... excruciating nerve pain in right side of neck to top of skull... We're hoping it's just Occipital Neuralgia... MRI on the 15th. Nerve drugs for now. Pretty sure he said rest in bed and play elden ring all day. fun
It's just Lazy... even though we have access to the history. People just make stuff up. We have a wealth of documented history and people just living in bubbles. why ? why do this ? I mean I get it... you gotta HYPE the story... but it diminishes all the work done before you.
and this far about me. I wonder about JODI (1994) for example (Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans / en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jodi_(…. )... I wonder about the countless and often times nameless people who's shoulders these history ignoring people stand on.
the Universe Machine... what a long road it's been... 8 years of tinkering... pre-mint opens tomorrow on @kohiart / kohi.art/artist/praystation / were running test mints now... and with 1 of 55 possible pattern sets and 10 different colorways... the diversity is lovely.
had the pleasure of meeting @think_flexible today. Nothing quite like seeing the NFTs he's collected of mine from @SuperRare on a huge 4k LED wall. Had a great time chatting about my future plans & future hopes for NFTs in physical spaces like this. cc @y_kymin@alessiodevecchi
here's what frustrates me... lets go back to the 80's... access to knowledge was difficult. (college? library? microfiche?) you basically STFU... you're not an expert. you don't know. Today we have an ocean of access to knowledge/history... no-one will STFU & STILL you don't know
after enjoying creating full blown classes on skillshare and gumroad... I've shifted to smaller more digestible ideas on @Patreon / I plan on diving into more in-depth/practical behaviors of using creative coding in your daily creative workflow. patreon.com/joshuadavis
1995/1996. I had a computer at @PrattInstitute where I worked in the publications dept building their first website. At home I had a 286 PC with an amber screen. I was teaching myself JS to create a RGB to HEX converter. 28 years later selling my art @ChristiesInc truly humbled.
Orbit of Influence, generates 3 invisible planets (s,m,l) & then 50 objects randomly pick a planet & speed at which to orbit. a limited orbit is captured & painted as a brush across the sphere in 3D space. Adding some hidden interaction to show system blueprint. @fx_hash_ 4.12
I haven't put any code on chain in a while. 8 years ago, I was playing with CA in processing (vimeo.com/172790680) and had minted a unique 1 of 1 foundation.app/mint/eth/0x3B… collected by @beeple / I finally ported the code to run... on chain... in real-time... infinitely...
tell your story... talk about your work... love your work... love the space... love the community... but if you're work gets pulled into a museums permanent collection... this isn't some miracle that just occurred. Many countless people have been fighting this fight for decades.
Back in the mid 90's I met @auriea and @michaelsamynART when we were making work on HELL . com with JODI & @liasomething & others. It's been 30 years of embracing digital media. Tonight her show at @MovingImageNYC is a fantastic 30 year retrospective. Curated by @ReginaHarsanyi
my first website / cyphen.com/color / around 1996 I was trying to teach myself HTML and JavaScript and at the time PhotoShop 4 didn't support hexadecimal color values so this project allowed you to input RGB and get the HEX equivalent. PrayStation follows 2 years later
hello. from @AndersonRanch in lovely Snowmass Colorado, its been an amazing few days writing code in @ProcessingOrg today we'll start to head over to the fab-lab and laser cut some paper and wood.
spends 8 years writing some generative code to produce images and animation within an aesthetic (but wildly random) takes 20 images of ONLY the best renders and starts multi-pass training in Stable Diffusion 2.0... half day later... (thanks to @m_p_y for the assistance)
the V01D / 004-001 / MAPS / animation playing on a billboard in Times Square for the @MAPS x @ChristiesInc auction. Photo by @maciej_kuciara / this work is a donation and 100% of the auction sale benefits @MAPS / thank you whoever placed that opening bid. onlineonly.christies.com/s/c…
spending father's day flying home to Littleton Colorado to be with my dad who's just landed in the hospital with bacterial pnemonia... Then a week long workshop in Aspen. I'm not sure how emotionally present I'm going to be these next 2 weeks. Send positive vibes please.
I know I've been quiet for a bit... but super excited to share I'll be participating on @LGNDART a fantastic POS platform using $WAXP LGND really puts itself in a position to solve a lot of problems in the NFT space, regarding curation, gas fees, ETH bridge, etc. #youareLGND
