I spent a ton of time this year writing about "Code Art" from the olden times to the present. I'm going to share some of the bibliography for the olden stuff over the next few days... for fun :)
Ben and I have worked on Processing for nearly 17 years. How and why did we start? Here’s “The History of Processing” in ~3600 words: medium.com/@ProcessingOrg/a-…@ben_fry
We don't have "generative art" in 2022 without long and rich histories of computer art, video synthesis, cybernetics, experimental film and animation, conceptual art, collage, centuries of drawing and painting... +++++ it's all on the table, all the time...
"Generative art refers to any art practice where the artist uses a system, such as a set of natural language rules, a computer program, a machine, ... which is set into motion with some degree of autonomy contributing to or resulting in a completed work of art." —Galanter, 2003
I'm teaching a ten-week introduction to coding with Processing for artists and designers. All of the materials are online if you'd like to follow: classes.dma.ucla.edu/Fall20/…
🙌 Ben has written and maintained the core Processing source code (libraries and editor) for 21+ years now. He has created free and open software that is used by students, artists, technologists, and +++ around the 🌏 @ben_fry@ProcessingOrgprocessing.org
My Software Structures (2004) is on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in "Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965–2018" whitney.org/exhibitions/prog…@whitneymuseum
New processing.org! I'll be forever grateful to @designsystemsin for donating their time to make this happen. It's been a beautiful collaboration and my Perl scripts from the early 2000s are finally retired!
I'm researching "generative art" on "social media" with a focus on the ~present. Who's doing the most interesting work in this space? Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, OpenProcessing, etc. What do you think?

.@ProcessingOrg has been hard at work on the Processing Community Catalog, a hardcover 900+ page book with over 600 pages contributed by community members. Available through the annual fundraiser: donorbox.org/processingfound…#supportP5
I don’t usually share personal things on social media, but friends kept asking me “What are you doing for your 50th birthday” and all I wanted to do was to make new things and share them online. Tomorrow I’m launching my “birthday/death” project on @artblocks_io
We're thrilled to announce 923 EMPTY ROOMS #150 has joined the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art @LACMA Thank you to @brtmoments and @artblocks_io!
OK, after a few frenetic hours and wonderful generosity from you, here's an unfiltered, compiled list of nearly 200 accounts to check out: docs.google.com/spreadsheets…
code needs to perform, it can't be captured. when you create generative art in the way some of my work exists, the instant it gets encoded in video for the web or represented as an image, it kills everything that's essential to it.
I'm opening a new, online exhibition space for digital art — it's called Feral File. There's a preview up now, and the first show, Social Codes, launches March 19th. More at @FeralFileferalfile.com

There's a *huge* difference in my work on @fx_hash_ and @artblocks_io. The former are sketches that extend the ideas of other artists. The work on Art Blocks is the result of months of energy over multiple years; it's my core work. I 🖤 them both ==, though.
Earlier this week, Ben Fry wrote a personal thread about his views on Processing and the Processing Foundation, saying that he left the Foundation because he disagreed with its direction. I’m clarifying that I’m aligned with the Processing Foundation, my vision of Processing and the Processing Foundation are the same.
generative art evolved from drawing, painting, avant-garde film, experimental video, kinetic sculpture, performance, happenings, conceptual art, land art +++++
This is a big one... Lauren @laurenleemack and I are starting Social Software, a new studio at UCLA @SoSoftUCLA
And... we’re hiring!
We’re seeking a full-time Creative Producer to manage studio operations, installations, and events.

in generative art, i think we need people “expanding the base” and we need people “pushing the edges.” we need both working together and in dialog to get anywhere
I'm kicking of my 2025–2026 academic year at UCLA tomorrow by teaching "111: Art and the Internet" in the morning and "252A: Coding For The Arts" in the afternoon 💻🎨
This is the "courseware" I designed and built in 1999 for @johnmaeda's Design By Numbers software. It simplified creating assignments, reviewing work in class, and documenting everything.
I wrote "Thoughts on Software for the Visual Arts" back in 2017 to express why I've worked on Processing with @ben_fry (and so many others!) for all of these years 🌞

does anyone have the time and desire to organize a @ProcessingOrg 20th anniversary fundraiser on @hicetnunc2000? a collection of @p5xjs OBJKTs to raise some funds for development?
I can't believe it's been nearly 20 years. I want to look forward, not back, but I also want to celebrate this full community effort somehow... @ben_fry
it was a good week to think about ways to exhibit generative art through comparison. left image is @jeffgdavis with @brtmoments in berlin, second image is @tylerxhobbs with @sothebys in new york
Over 20 years after the first release, Processing is more capable and easier to use than ever before thanks to the Herculean efforts of @ben_fry guiding the software. It has always been free for everyone to explore: processing.org/download
This Thursday at 6:44pm EDT... I'm launching CENTURY 2052 on @artblocks_io in an edition of 50. At that time, I turn 50 (years old). This NFT will die on the same day and time in 2052. Will I outlive this artwork? Will this artwork outlive me? artblocks.io/project/369
Hi. I'm working on a new website (and .csv) that indexes everything I've made and released since 2000. I hope this will be interesting and useful for some people. If this is you, what do you want to know? What kind of data?
Thank you to everyone who supported 923 EMPTY ROOMS this week online and in the galleries in Tokyo, Berlin, London, New York, Mexico City, and Venice Beach! It was an amazing experience to release this over six days with you and collaborators at @brtmoments and @artblocks_io

Hi! Did you know I teach at UCLA? We have an amazing small department called Design Media Arts. We rarely have openings for new faculty and we have one now. Please help spread the word! Professor of Media Arts, Media Design and Visual Communication: recruit.apo.ucla.edu/JPF0785…
I didn't know that CENTURY-XXX-METABILL was going to be the last release on Tezos for @fx_hash_ when I uploaded it a few days ago. I was totally surprised by the announcements yesterday! It was rough news to hear for a lot of reasons.

I need to do better. Today we start anti-racism summer school at home along with my 12yo daughter with /Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You/. Here's a list of anti-racism resources (prepared by others) for all ages: docs.google.com/document/d/1…
"I started learning to code in 1999 to create drawings that I couldn’t make with my hands. My original way into the visual arts was through drawing and my way into coding was through a new way of thinking about drawing."

Roman Verostko passed away this week. He was a 💎, a passionate artist who carried us all forward. Here are my two favorite photos from a 2015 visit to his studio...
"Generative art is not just a bunch of random computer lines that don’t mean anything. Software is a crucial epistemology of our time and to address the potential and problems of our era..." 🎲 @Lucy2Scribblesbrooklynrail.org/2022/07/art…
For example, I will not take part an all-male panel discussion. If you are unable to confirm and I learn the event/panel is not an inclusive group of people days or hours before the start, I will withdraw and I'll be public about why.

New: "Art Software 2000–2020 will be a collection of text, images, and code that artists will contribute about their own work at the intersections of art and software. These materials will be collected through an open call for participation." docs.google.com/document/d/1…
I'm searching for artist-created CD-ROMs and HyperCard stacks and things like that from the late 80s through the 90s. Do you have any leads or links? 🍓
