Soft power grows from the hull of a hospital ship? Maybe. At least it's a slightly better effort than usual from the PRC. @peter_dutton
Peace Ark sailors celebrate w/ residents in #Djibouti. The Chinese medical ship is in Djibouti for a 9-day visit. bit.ly/2en2XZ5

Agree with Bonnie, statement seems to be teeing up much greater focus on non-PRC claimants’ resource rights. Real Q now is what the US can do operationally and diplomatically to change PRC action. Clarified* legal position creates new options. *not so clear

军事方面: Gwadar isn’t a PLA base and doesn’t need to be. The PLAN calls regularly at Karachi, and another Pak port of call doesn’t add much. Some probable dual uses moving forward, so we will be watching closely w/ @peter_dutton @KennedyMaritime @AndrewSErickson @rdmartinson88

AI hallucination effect appears quite strong in Dall-E 3 [Beta] tasked to produce map of China's seaborne critical mineral flows. Beautiful and bizarre...

Would not expect PLA to participate in anything except protecting PRC-flagged vessels...but Red Sea is shaping up as an interesting test of just what the Djibouti base is for and what Beijing can do with it.

Yes. Economic openness -- i.e., the ability to conduct market transactions free of coercion -- is something that all the SCS parties want and need. If US would emphasize that instead of FONOPs, we might find willing partners.

UAE takes another overt step away from US security network, lacking faith in US ability to deter Iran. China will not be a ready substitute for that US regional security role. Interesting emerging dynamic 👀 @jonathandfulton @DawnMurphyChina @GeringTuvia wsj.com/articles/u-a-e-says-…
