Introducing "China Global," a new GMF podcast hosted by @GMFAsia Program Director @BonnieGlaser that will explore the different facets of #China's foreign policy and what they mean for the rest of the world.
Stay tuned here for the release of episode one!
China warns against Japan PM's attendance at NATO summit. Will they also warn the leaders of Korea, Australia, and New Zealand? Why single out Japan? And why does China have the right to tell countries how to pursue their own national interests? english.kyodonews.net/news/2….
PLA is fully capable of destroying all of Taiwan's military installations within a few hours, before seizing the island shortly after. Chinese army & people have such self-confidence. At the same time, we strongly support maintaining peace. Sparking a conflict should be avoided.
Taiwan's health care system has been ranked No. 1 in the world for two years in a row. So why isn’t Taiwan included in #WHO? focustaiwan.tw/society/20200…

"Home-made" is not exactly a complete description. Many of the most important systems aboard (like the avionics and engines) come from Western countries with a lot more experience in modern commercial jets.
Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe created the concept of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. The Quad evolved from his "security diamond" concept. His contribution to Japanese foreign policy and regional security was enormous. His death is a huge loss. RIP
A quick thread on Blinken's visit to China -- Day 1: The readouts by both sides are fairly positive --more positive than I expected. The PRC readout says "China is committed to building a stable, predictable, and constructive China-U.S. relationship." That's important. 1/n
Typical PRC thinking: Since China's power is growing, all other countries have to concede to Chinese demands, including on sovereignty disputes, and compromise their own interests.
#Opinion: It is laughable to see #India threaten #China with fighters jets ordered years ago. New Delhi needs to wake up. The gap between India's national strength and China's is widening. bit.ly/3k2qNde
I literally laughed at this. How many foreign apps does China block? Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Telegram, Skype, Linked-In...to name a few. This is really rich.
As China takes the UN Security Council gavel, its envoy has words for the US
“Look at Huawei. Look at TikTok, now the DeepSeek. How many more do you want to ban?” he asked.

This comparison is completely wrong. It feeds a false narrative that Beijing will almost certainly propagate. A real journalist should know the difference. If you don't, do some research about Hong Kong. HK protesters were not conducting a coup.
Moscow is equipping its fighter jets, submarines and soldiers with the help of Chinese companies, customs data shows wsj.com/articles/china-aids-… via @WSJ
If you view these decisions as "giving" and "taking" then it isn't surprising that you are perplexed and vexed. India acts in its own self-interest, which doesn't always align with Western interests.
"Taiwan's vulnerability is forcing Washington to act. It's why Taiwanese ground troops are being dispatched to the US to train and US trainers are coming to Taipei to embed with Taiwan's marines and special forces." Good piece by @wingcommander1. bbc.com/news/world-asia-6728…
Macron's office "insisted on 'proofreading' all the president’s quotes...as a condition of granting the interview...some parts...in which the president spoke even more frankly about Taiwan and Europe’s strategic autonomy were cut out by the Elysée." politico.eu/article/emmanuel…
A PRC military commentator argues that the Bucha massacre was staged. The war is the fault of the US, NATO, and Ukraine. Russia has no responsibility. This is likely a widely shared view in China.
"One could argue that [the Bucha massacre] was staged; after all, Zelensky is an actor doing what actors are trained to do" - Professor Song Zhongping, a military commentator for Phoenix TV, blames everyone but the Russian forces for the atrocities in Bucha.

Elections held in #Taiwan can't change cross-Strait situation. The one-#China principle is international consensus. We firmly oppose Taiwan inpendence and any external interference. We look to the European side to continue to abide by the one-China principle.
What terrific questions! UN Resolution 2758 does not mention the "one China" policy or principle. And yes, the people of Taiwan are citizens of the world. They shouldn't be barred from entering UN HQ, and Taiwan should be allowed to participate in UN activities.
This is how the @UN respond to any Taiwan-related questions.
#Taiwan, Asia's leading democracy, is excluded from the UN system, while #Russia becomes the president of the UN Security Council on April 1st.
The UN needs to be radically reformed.

Everyone needs to calm down about war with China, Gen. Mark Milley said. The Joint Chiefs chairman warned against the rise of “overheated” rhetoric of a looming U.S. war with China, and he said he doubts China’s chances of “conquering” Taiwan. defenseone.com/threats/2023/…
Don't know what's inspired this media attack on Vincent Chao, but he's one of Taiwan's brightest and best diplomats. V bright, works around the clock, fantastically well-connected among foreign diplomats, will represent Taiwan well wherever he goes. Enough already.
Japan's former minister for econ security ('22-'24) Takaichi calls for new coalition: "Japan, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, India & other countries upholding democratic values should form a quasi-security alliance to protect each other's security and safety."focustaiwan.tw/politics/2025…
On Sept 2, 78 years ago, Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender. During the Anti-Japanese War, Chinese military and civilian casualties exceeded 35 million.
Chinese people won't forget the history of blood&tears. This scene should be remembered the most by Japanese themselves.
#Italy may have had an unexplained strain of pneumonia as early as November and December 2019 with highly suspected symptoms of #COVID19, reports said.
My takeaways from this chart: 1) attitudes toward Taiwan in many countries are quite positive; 2) a large % of people don't know enough about Taiwan to have an opinion. @MOFA_Taiwan, there is more work to do in Europe, Canada, Indonesia, India and across Africa!
This is underappreciated: China is preparing the ground to pin blame on the US in the event that it attacks Taiwan: And one diplomat says it is succeeding: "In a crisis, many Asian neighbours would blame America and its ally Japan for stirring tensions." economist.com/special-report…
I'll go further than that. With the referendum on pork failing to gain a majority, let's negotiate a bilateral free trade agreement with Taiwan. Both sides will benefit. And then other countries may follow.
With the referendum on pork failing to gain a majority, let’s finally put this long-standing bilateral irritant behind us and continue to strengthen our economic relations with Taiwan on supply chains, technologies, and other emerging issues. reuters.com/world/asia-pacif…
Many Americans like Chinese food, but polls show increasingly unfavorable American opinions toward China. This tweet shows how desperate BJ is to identify something that Taiwan and 🇨🇳 have in common. Econ interdependence hasn't promoted pol integration, & cuisine won't either.
This is a deliberate twisting of my words. I said that Beijing favors Ko Wen-je. Please listen to the recording of the session. I understand that CNA has reported accurately what I said. Ko is dishonest.
The US...reaffirms that an armed attack in the Pacific, which includes the South China Sea, on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft, incl CG, would invoke US mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 U.S. Philippines MDT. state.gov/u-s-support-for-th…
I am thrilled to see that my research is garnering attention. I appear to have struck a very sensitive nerve in Beijing. Perhaps the CCP should stop distorting Resolution 2758? Instead, they have launched a personal attack on me.
#Opinion: The US government and academia are collaborating to reconstruct Taiwan-related rhetoric and hollow out the "one-China policy." There is the "grey policy supply chain" of "Taiwan independence" lobbying; academic packaging; congressional momentum building; government adoption. @BonnieGlaserglobaltimes.cn/page/202406/1…

EU officials say PRC diplomats have removed talking points blaming NATO for the conflict in Ukraine & made clear that the use of nuclear weapons by Russia would be viewed as totally unacceptable in Beijing. Read @noahbarkin Watching China in Europe gmfus.org/news/watching-chin…
The readout of Xi Jinping's meeting with Blinken leaves me with one major concern: it is problematic that Xi said competition among major powers does not conform to the trend of the times. 1/3
China is going to move on Taiwan. China will stop exports to the US on which we depend. Many Americans will start dying almost instantly when medical supplies stop flowing.
This is terrifying and it's going to happen.
"The United States reaffirms an armed attack on Philippine public vessels, aircraft, and armed forces—including those of its Coast Guard in the South China Sea—would invoke U.S. mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 U.S. Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty."
Not smart of the PRC to issue this warning. It’s like waving a red flag in front of a bull. The US will fly, sail, and navigate wherever international law allows.
A joint demarche was issued jointly to the WHO by Geneva-based ambos of Canada, Australia, France, Germany, NZ, Britain, Japan and US in support of reinstating Taiwan's observer status. torontosun.com/news/national…
All the Southeast Asian claimants in the South China Sea should settle their territorial disputes amongst themselves based on UNCLOS. Good development: Vietnam says it's ready to hold talks with Philippines on overlapping continental shelf claims apnews.com/article/vietnam-p…
Taiwan's 23 million people must be included in the #GlobalHealthSecurity network. The World Health Organization should ensure that Taiwan has the opportunity both to contribute to and benefit from #WHO meetings. #SpeakUpForTaiwan.
I thank the US House of Representatives for unanimously passing a bill supporting #Taiwan’s @WHO participation. #GlobalHealthSecurity requires joint efforts from countries around the world, including Taiwan. If you agree that no one should be left behind, please #SpeakUpForTaiwan
This is not correct. Chinese planes are NOT flying over Taiwan or in Taiwan's territorial airspace. They are flying in international air space, within Taiwan's declared air defense identification zone.
Is it any surprise that Chinese planes are flying over Taiwan? Or that North Korea is testing missiles again? Or that Iran is ramping up its nuclear program?
They all sense Biden’s weakness. #WakeUp#GetToWork
"People always talk about how China is a big market.. no, China is a huge economy with a small accessible market,” said Jörg Wuttke, pres of EU Chamber of Commerce in China. Overall, E.U. exports to China are only slightly larger than those to Switzerland. nytimes.com/2022/10/30/world…

G7 FM Statement: We support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in WHO forums & the World Health Assembly. The international community should be able to benefit from the experience of all partners, including Taiwan’s successful contribution to the tackling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The risk of conflict at Second Thomas Shoal is increasing. I asked PLA Gen Dong Jun if he would today declare that China would stop ramming and using water cannons against Philippines supply boats. He reiterated China’s position. I guess that’s a no.
This is a deliberate distortion, @HuXijin_GT. The official US response was "The patrol remained in international waters and was not considered a threat."
Hou You-yi says he would scrap DPP's extension of Taiwan military service if elected president. This is aimed at winning votes. It will create a lot of friction with the US and send the wrong signal to the PRC. taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/49…

Update: Taiwan is producing 20 million masks per day. The number of COVID-19 infections is steady at 440, with 7 deaths. The government and people of Taiwan should be proud of what they have accomplished so far. It's response holds lessons for all countries. #Taiwancanhelp.
Taiwan is producing over 17 million masks per day and has begun exporting PPE to the United States and other countries.
@ChinaPowerCSIS director @BonnieGlaser explains how Taiwan is effectively combating the threat of Covid-19.
It is regretful that the views expressed by me and my co-authors in Foreign Affairs are being taken out of context by some people in Taiwan. The main point of the article is that effective deterrence requires both credible threats and assurances. 1/x foreignaffairs.com/taiwan/ta…

The S.China Sea arbitration is an example of political manipulation of the intl rule of law of the sea. It has undermined the atmosphere for maritime peace and cooperation in the region, eroded the basic values of fairness and justice, should be a cause for alarm and be rejected by the intl community: Wang Yi globaltimes.cn/page/202311/1…
The US, and many other countries, have their own "one China" policies. They do not accept China's "one China" principle. UN Res. 2758 didn't mention Taiwan nor bar its participation in the United Nations. Why does Beijing insist on distorting its meaning? gmfus.org/news/distortion-un…

Going forward, I hope that my public statements and writings will not be twisted to suggest that I support any particular candidate running for president in Taiwan.
UK will face consequences if it rules China is a hostile country - China's envoy Liu Xiaoming. reut.rs/2VTK8D8. In other words, actions taken by other countries to defend their national interests will be punished by China.
Friends in Taiwan, please pay attention to how civilians can participate in a defense plan. China is watching and will draw lessons. You need to do so as well. @iingwen@MPWangTingyu

The PLA has conducted military exercises in the Taiwan Straits and at its northern and southern ends, showing PLA is capable of launching a full scale attack and capturing the island within hours, leaving US military no time to react. It’s a clear warning to Taiwan independence.
