As the world's assets move onchain in the coming years, we are focused on giving users control in way that traditional players cannot: permissionless and non-custodial. a couple thoughts from a former high frequency trader: 1. Good market makers made a killing yesterday. Profit is correlated to volatility and volume. And it’s non-linear: profit increases dramatically with vol. 2. Market makers like @wintermute_t, @jump_ are the reason why there is even liquidity to trade at all. Liquidity provisioning is not an easy job. Do you want to take the opposite side of every trade? Especially, in the insider-trading heavy world of crypto? 3. A question I keep seeing: How does the market go down if no one is selling? This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how markets work. If there are no bids, the asset price goes immediately to 0. No one has to sell, you just have to run out of buyers. 4. Not all market makers are created equal. There are many crypto trading firms that label themselves as “market makers”, but in fact they act more like OTC desks. Market making means placing bids and offers to provide liquidity to markets while remaining delta neutral. Anyone who is not doing this, but calling themselves a market maker is lying. 5. A question I’ve been pondering: Is it possible to implement circuit breakers in crypto? When a US stock falls 7% in a day it enters into a 15 minute trading halt. This is possible because there are only so many US stock exchanges (centralized). This prevents stocks from cratering to 0 and allows liquidity to come in on the bid side. Unclear to me how this is possible without centralization. You can’t be the one exchange that pauses trading.

I was lucky to be given early access to the @baseapp. After using it for the past week, these are my key product takeaways (good, needs improvement, and the bad) for @jessepollak and team. From someone who has used almost every major crypto social and/or trading app and a former crypto product manager. Let's start with the good here: 1. The @baseapp is the new app for Digital Payments. It will replace @Venmo because (1) the base app is global with no KYC and because (2) you can actually earn the yield on the deposits that you hold (rather than letting Venmo earn that yield). 2. The @baseapp is the new app for Digital Spending. Not only send and earn, you can also spend USDC where it is accepted directly from the app. It's early days (almost anywhere you go, won't accept USDC), but I believe in @coinbase and @circle to push this agenda long term. 3. There's no mention of gas anywhere. That's how it should be. Especially given the fact that @base is a centralized sequencer. Networks are also hidden away unless you really need to look for them. All really great moves to get first time users on and not confused. 4. The Farcaster interface is also way better than the Farcaster app. I haven't figured out why, but something feels more right about it here.

Rent is an existential crisis to @solana. For startups that rapidly scale, it can be an insurmountable upfront cost to suddenly have to cover rent for 1 million wallets. And then each token those wallets want to hold is MORE rent. Not a knock at @solana, but an ask for a solution. In @ethereum world, wallet creation was greatly improved by CREATE2.

spent this morning reading @RibbitCapital's Token Letter (link in thread). This early paragraph in particular aligns with the vision we have for @glider__. Personalized automated finance, nothing between you and your assets, democratized access to all. One thing I believe that they get wrong here is the section on "Everyone will have access to a world-class personal finance advisor" (see page 26). While I fully agree with that statement, every company mentioned in that section is an AI FinTech---not a single crypto/defi company. These FinTechs are building in the wrong direction. Larry Fink said last week, "All of the world's assets will be tokenized", financial rails will be onchain. Building agents around the traditional financial system is a waste of time. It will all be replaced. Onchain rails will dominate. The future is permissionless blockchain-based finance.
