Anyone can make generative art using Bitcoin's natively generated immutable block data just like anyone can shove arbitrary data into the Witness, OP_RETURN etc space for storage.
But it is protocols and standards that make it understandable and seen.
Ordinals Protocol (sat serial numbers combined with a specific inscription envelope construct) normalizes storage use case in one opinionated way.
DMT Framework with supporting protocols (i.e. TAP) and sub-protocols (i.e. NATCATS) normalizes generative art and non-arbitrary tokenomics (or hybrid models).
Some say you don't need DMT to do the things being done with it. Of course you don't need it. Same applies to Ordinals Protocol, Runes, Counterparty and other variants that enable storage and tokens. They are not needed and anyone can concoct their own recipe to do these things. But it is because there are standards that exist that make these things interpretable and consumable with consensus that makes them "work".
Bitmap may seem ridiculous, and it was to me for the first few days, but I did appreciate recognizing the enormous amount of dormant dead immutable Bitcoin block data in a way that can make use of it in novel ways. Like generative art has used hard data on chains like Ethereum to create hard but dynamic media, this is taken in new directions that allow for a base hard data set to represent crypto assets while an offchain ecosystem of experiences (i.e. games and general virtual world environments) can reliably leverage these assets. Bitmap opened the door more to this way of thinking. It might just be a text string to make a claim based on first is first and just one namespace among many, but the foundational idea is what really matters here.
DMT expands this to the max. Beyond "plots" of virtual "land" and mappable data to represent object characteristics etc, DMT is for general purpose use. It need not be "metaverse" related (depending on how you define metaverse) and can be literally anything imagined.
If Ordinals and other protocols has been of paramount importance to revive Bitcoin over the past few years, so to will DMT. And any protocol can adopt Digital Matter Theory not just TAP. @trac_btc just happens to be at the bleeding edge of the big picture and is first to support these concepts.

It is non-obvious what anything should or could be valued at since the crypto art space is largely based on narratives, amplification, clout, luck and timing.
I am personally fascinated with the introduction of DMT and leveraging the Bitcoin ledger's immutable data to dictate token supplies that are at least in part non-arbitrary and not entirely formulated by human tokenomic designers. The unknowns, especially related to unique non-arbitrary tokens (UNATs) for the purposes of generative art and "traits" is something most collectors have appreciated for years and so it should be well-considered when applied to Bitcoin whether or not there is adherence to a specific protocol/framework.
A benefit of working off of DMT standards is for better clarity into conventions for collectors and creators to reference and this can improve over time as the standards evolve and experiments coalesce.
There is value in this effort. Whether or not there is value in any given implementation by creators is subjective. As with many things in this space, the inundation of redundant copies for monetary gains over innovation and thoughtful artistic creations will always exist. Things get played out and boring. This is what motivates those who care to keep striving to be different and perhaps be first at something new. DMT helps with this and allows for embedded tokenization.
DMT feels undervalued.
Gotta give King credit here as he has obviously put in a lot of effort to improve distribution & create something dope af.. direct from BTC chain data

Minting GROK42 is an open mint like all DMT-NAT tokens (currently) but not all mints claiming blocks will be associated and valid with the specific GROK42 art project specifically. The details have not been announced by me since it is still being tuned.
And yes, GROK42 is not strictly adhering to DMT-NAT standard but perhaps if the adjustments demonstrated are enjoyed, they could make their way into the proposed standard managed by @TheBlockRunner and others.

I've been using Bitcoin since 2010.
But not like I have in the last year since Ordinals.
Degen'n on Bitcoin has actually been a better experience imo than my NFT degen'n on Ethereum, Tezos and even Solana.
And the speed of Bitcoin often feels right to me. A healthy throttle. Not inconvenient. Eventual assurance is just part of the flow of the day.
Life on L1 ain't that bad.

When I deployed GROK, I set the max supply to 21000042 and the mint limit to 421. This was back in April 2023.
Since then, Elon Musk launched GROK AI and made this statement:
"Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!"
He emphasized that Grok is designed to answer questions with a touch of wit, and highlighted its playful and informative tone, differentiating it from more traditional, neutral AI responses
As many are aware, the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.... is the number 42.
So, many thought that Elon deployed GROK BRC-20.
I fused these two sci-fi layers into GROK before Elon fused them into GROK AI. It is pretty interesting that we both did this in different ways. Maybe I would get along with Elon after all.
And 421 is the fusion of 42 and 21 for Bitcoin of course.

Step one to explaining Digital Matter Theory is to point out that Ordinals itself is baseline DMT.
The discovery that satoshis can and should be numbered (FIFO) and can and do have special types of sats based on when and where they existed is part of DMT.
Let's put aside the "sats don't exist" part for this. This is for those who think/know they do exist and are wearing the ordinals lens.
Ordinals Theory is a particular slice of Digital Matter Theory just as Bitmap Theory is another particular slice.
DMT as the overarching theory and the framework, albeit opinionated in design, is being developed to better understand what this all means and how to use it.

This issue is resolved. The GROK42 I deployed is recognized as valid and any others invalid. Also the next DMT element to get indexed will be 4.4.element which is what GROK42 uses.
The person who posted false info and who deployed the invalid GROK42 has deleted their posts here.
Thanks to @rarity_garden and @TheBlockRunner for sorting this out. It will take some time for the technical updates to take effect on interfaces. Be patient.

This is false information. The GROK42 copycat is invalid because it uses the same ticker as the valid one deployed in January.
No pattern was defined and defaulted the value of the field (4.4.element is block height).
From the DMT Gitbook:
"The first deployment of a ticker is the only one that has claim to the ticker."
"Data Types: "h" hex, "n" numeric, "x" unix time, "s" string, "b" boolean. If the "dt" field is left out, the data type set within the block data is used by default."
If people want to own blocks with 42 in it, that is valid. It does not mean the pattern must have been specified. All blocks are valid. Blocks with 42 are special.
Apparently, the writers of DMT-NAT gitbook @TheBlockRunner want to change the rule about unique tickers now so it can accommodate this copycat GROK42 on element 11. I do not agree with this change.
But the point of this post is to stop the false information. @bitcoinxdao may or may not understand the truth.

Before the infamous Runes blog post, I inscribed the STET manifesto last August where I mention the critical importance of UTXO management and even used the word "etch" 🤔
(I was actually testing if markdown would render on various sites before markdown was officially supported as a content-type)
Fast-forward 8 months to present day at the advent of The Halvening and the launch of Runes, everyone is scrambling to manage their UTXOs and getting educated more about how Bitcoin works. This was the intention of @STET_ by design but regardless of how we got here, it's great to see and glad to be here for it.
I'm a fan of Runes and Atomicals and STET falls somewhere in between. My plan was to launch with Runes at the halvening block 840000 because technically RUNE and STET can be combined in same TX. This is interesting and pretty cool in fact (similar to how CBRC-20/BRC-20 can be in same TX) but also somewhat risky and would not garner any support from the ecosystem.
STET is also a PoW meta-protocol which seems to still have questionable interest. Atomicals has seen success and more recently POW-20 as well. However, mixing a PoW TX with Runes out the gate will be fairly counter-intuitive due to the mad rush and demand to etch and mint Runes.
I have also re-prioritized my projects and am focusing on DMT @GROK42_ NAT/UNAT project before fees spike too high.
So I have decided to let the chaos settle a bit and monitor the space post-halvening and probably iterate a bit more on STET protocol and tooling before putting it out there in the wild. I understand that with Atomicals and Runes, and whatever BRC-20 2.0 will become, there may not be much need or interest in any more novel Bitcoin token protocols. This is fine too. Passion hobby projects in this space do not always need to be widely adopted. The process of thinking and building even in isolation can be a valuable experience and a lot of fun. No regrets.

There is merit to simplicity and complexity. This spectrum of digital culture experimentation should be respected by all in Bitcoin Ordinals.
DMT and art projects like the UNAT NatCats PFP are obviously on the more complex end of spectrum. I like to call DMT the weird science niche of this space.
Similar to the basic concept of generative art and individual methods of using block data, DMT attempts to standardize some of these methods and wrap NFT/FT and uNAT/AT into a broad framework and protocol that can support sub-protocols for extensibility.
Generative Artists can choose to use DMT or not. The only thing that matters is that there is the option to use a thoughtful system that delves deep into Digital Matter Theory. It is not necessary or always the right fit for the artist or project, but everyone should embrace the efforts by all who are forming structure around immutable block data experimentation with or w/o art involved.
