i had a rant about how the tech industry will be blindsided by anti-ai sentiment and how it’ll manifest as riots and violence
what i didn’t expect was it manifesting as spiteful adoption of the competition
to shed a light on the how insane some anti-ai arguments on this app sound (have you seen those posts? like the recent one saying ai is hogging up all the water and is the reason we can’t put out the fires? the arguments are even worse on some other platforms)
to make supporters of those arguments reflect on their critical thinking skills, to not blindly believe everything they read on the internet
no, ai is not drying up the oceans
no, each prompt isn’t killing a tree or consuming 3,000,000 gallons of water
no, a forest was not burned so that a 4
minute ai video could be generated
no, the god damn chatgpt models aren’t named after their water consumption (that should’ve really raised an eyebrow)
yet each of those takes are blindly accepted by hundreds of thousands to millions of people
most of which seem to believe that ai is this evil entity powered by late stage capitalism and power hungry ceos that is destroying our planet and ourselves with no possible upside in any way, shape, or form
a lot of the anti-ai arguments i see on here, other platforms, and in real life, especially in regard to the environmental impact of ai, are extremely misconstrued versions of the truth and yet still accepted by millions at face value
it is not an exaggeration that people actively *avoid* ai, tell their friends to avoid it, cut people off for using ai, will shame you/bully you/threaten you for using ai (right now there is a trending case of an artist getting bullied into submission and deleting their account for suspected use of ai), would take your gpus if they could, would help destroy a data center if they could, etc
there are surprisingly a lot of modern luddites that would happily destroy modern society (which was propelled by technology) in order to go back to “simpler times before capitalism”
and a lot of people in my tech bubbles don’t know about this vehement anti-ai sentiment and mob that is growing larger and increasingly more violent each day
i don’t want anti-ai riots in the streets because of misinformation about ai frying people’s brains and making them believe ai is the devil because of reasons that they read from a bullet list on a flowery infographic their friend shared with them or that they read on this site
and i don’t want the tech world to get blindsided by the above so i like to riff on it and in doing so i expose these ideas that need to be nipped in the bud
i know i can do more to accomplish this more productively and without accidentally causing the mass hysteria myself, so i may rethink how i do things moving forward
