THE THING IS NOT WHAT IT IS
This is at the core of what Cents is saying -- and perhaps it can be traced back to 1971, to the fiatization of the global reserve currency, the removal of the relationship between physical substance and the dollar, the dawn of debasement (of meaning?). This is why Bitcoin itself was created, to reclaim the objecthood of currency in a digital era and to use this as means for sovereignty (for truth?).
Cents holds a prism to the core of these great breeches in the continuity of meaning. The nature of its presence on Bitcoin and the continual transformation of its objecthood through its continually changing relationship to value present an embodiment of an epochal shift that is still underway.
ty @DagieDee for highlighting this very insightful quotation by cultural theorist Jeah-Joseph Goux the other day. The rabbit hole is deep!
Was it purely by chance that the crisis of realism in the novel and in painting coincided with the end of gold money? Or that the birth of ‘abstract’ art coincided with the shocking invention of inconvertible monetary signs, now in general use? Can we not see in this double crisis of money and language the collapse of guarantees and frames of reference, a rupture between sign and thing, undermining representation and ushering in the age of the floating signifier?

ngl this has been an insane process, from the moment Rutherford started culling and archiving 10k copper Lincoln cents, to the compression of the digital images, to the inscription of the set, to the smelting of the physical pennies into a block, to the crafting and execution of a full-block inscription, to the stewarding and elevation of the artwork (which we look forward to being able to tell you about soon).
It's been a wild period for Bitcoin in general, but especially for Ordinals and especially for Ordinal art. It feels like every shred of the future is uncertain, not just Runes pulling attention into the casino, but the institutions that hold power over the globe gambling with everyone's future. However, we believe that Bitcoin is a key to universal sovereignty and dignity, and that art on Bitcoin (and especially Bitcoin as art) is a key to connecting to each other here and to making a path for the broader world to connect with the vision that we share.

This new edition is a larger run of 20k that will be distributed widely at museum shops, art fairs and online.
It's an honor to see Rutherford Chang's work included here with a text by Philip Tinari, Director of the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art and with editorial text and curation by @robertalice_21.

As the first person to ask "who's the artist" right after we announced, it's fitting that @SHL0MS introduce him more widely here.

i first heard of Rutherford Chang 11 years ago in an article about his ongoing project We Buy White Albums, at the time consisting of a record store occupying Recess Gallery and exclusively stocking 693 second hand copies of The Beatles’ self-titled 1968 LP; in the ensuing 11 years he has amassed many more and the collection currently has 3,417 copies.
the project opened my eyes to the idea of a collection of physical objects, extending the duchampian idea of a readymade to a collection of objects linked by form/function/origin, exploring the history, physical decay, and individuality of mass-produced items over time and centering the selection, presentation, and contextualization of these objects as an artistic act.
there is a rich history in conceptual art of works in this vein, examples that spring to mind: Hans-Peter Feldmann's "All the Clothes of a Woman", Christian Boltanski's "Les Archives du Coeur", Song Dong's "Waste Not"
those of you more familiar with my work might recognize a loose throughline between this line of thinking and some my own works such as $CAR, which presents a collection of charred fragments formerly comprising a Lamborghini and hand-ordered based on various criteria (but i digress)
when i first saw CENTS it appeared clear to me that there was a bold artistic eye behind it. the idea of a platform dropping a work that strips bare the fiction of a banal object and reveals the infinite variation even a humble object like a penny can contain, without a conceptual artist involved, seemed almost absurd.
i reached out and was pleasantly surprised to find that i was the first person to ask, and that the artist behind the project was none other than Rutherford Chang!
the gallery of pennies was hosted on his site and linked on the project page all along, but his involvement was a bit of an open secret - @sovrnart was kind enough to let me introduce him more widely in this post now that the mint is complete, as a personal fan of Rutherford and a promoter of all things conceptual crypto art. so pleased to welcome Rutherford to our strange little world!

Building a Wunderkammer, a Cabinet of Curiosities, is a practice that began in the 16th century as a way to honor objects of strange value. Now, we place such objects on blockchain. Each of the 108 objects in this Cabinet of Curiosities is a dead memory, a dead experience that has called out to be found, and Isa Kost transforms them one by one. The permanence of death becomes timeless presence on-chain.
We look at our curated serial collections as a way to make a vessel that can hold an artist's presence, a means of creating a 'place' that can serve as a home base and coherent core for their body of work. The beauty of this collection and the meaning-making that it does in relation to its medium on-chain make us proud to bring it into the world.
