What ive been working on… See that orange thing attached to the balloon, thats a vent. The idea is to use it to vent out helium from the balloon in order to reduce the ascent rate and eventually float! How does it work? See thread below 👇

Great job addressing this ily Youre right that we shouldn’t resort to violence and death threats I do disagree with the ignoring part I think we should reach out and try to have a conversation and address the questions he has. I’ve tried doing that but haven’t succeeded yet. It just may be that he hasnt had a fruitful conversation discussing islam and what concerns he has off the religion.

Doing venting in “cycles” I implemented triggers for this cycle to start and stop. The open command starts it and the close stops it The idea is to start the cycle at the altitude we want it to start and then let it vent. Open and close delays (time when the vent stays in that state) are now customizable (5s and 10s respectively in the vid below). Close command stops the cycle and we can start another cycle with the open command again Were launching on 11/24 and the idea is to do controlled slow venting to gather data to calculate constants for a potential PID control we’re developing for complete autonomy. The goal for the upcoming launch is to slowly reduce speed in two stages to ~0 m/s at 97000 feet and float! Questions are welcomed Wish us luck 🫡

Currently we send email commands, four commands in total Open Close Idle Cutdown! Open cause the flap to open and helium starts to exit Close closes the flap sealing the balloon Idle is like a refresh command in case used for safety (funny story at the end of the thread) Cutdown cause 4 nichrome loops to heat up and cut a string that cuts of the balloon from the vent. Thats how we come back to the ground. How do we send commands? 👇

Presenting the MSP-EXP430 Our microprocessor This guy only handles the open and close command. Iridium when received open/close it send a signal to this guy (possible because they both have an xbee on them that allows them to communicate) this is just 0/1 The rest happens here 180 lines of C Open causes the vent to open using a servo Close, closes it We observe the balloons speed, the altitude and make decisions on when we want to open and when we want to close in order to slow it down eventually getting a float Theres a lot of latency and huge room for error We want to make it autonomous We want the controller to use pressure and speed readings to decide when to and how long to open and close. We’re iterating towards it and heres the first iteration 👇

Wanted to switch between open and close states given a delay Working! Now want to put a time constraint on how long this behavior happens And then a trigger that causes this behavior initiates Right now it just starts as soon as we have power

Btw i do all this aside from having a 60 hour work week You can just do things especially when you care
WEEKLY UPDATE 🧵 Sunday was launch day so a lot happened over the week, this is my progress till the launch Will make a separate post for launch day Assembled a new vent, the old vent has gone extreme tests 😂. Had a problem with getting the seal tight (see the difference between the 2nd and 3rd photo). Tried to get the servo to move beyond a point but it wouldnt (can someone explain why servos dont have 360 degree movement maybe some do and its just the one im using that doesnt). Got the seal tight and even better than before because now I have the servo pulling more on the flap to resist any pressure or winds that may cause the seal to open, its not pulling a lot because then we would run out of battery faster

We have four files with names ending with 3 digit binary combinations Each correspond to their respective commands We send an email to a satellite service we us with the file for the command we want to execute attached, it gets sent to this guys The iridum Our middleman Receives the file, has an XBEE on it which decodes the binary combination and calls the respective command Again this is the middleman So who does the execution? 👇

You should write out your thoughts its an amazing experience. Writing is a much effective way to explore your thought process at a deeper level. If you think you are a great thinker you would be an even better one if you write those thoughts out Write my friends
if you extrapolate logic to decisions you make (particularly those where logic <<< emotion). How does the result turn out better or worse? Hmmm It could be argued that taking an emotional take is logical too because it fits the scenario you’re looking at. So dealing with a situation on an emotional foundation cannot be labelled as irrational which a lot of people tend to think it is, provided it is what best addresses the problem. Resolving conflict is a good metric to judge rationality, is your decision resolving conflict or is it, well, “coping”?
