idk when but at some point a couple years ago I completely lost all sense of beauty and wonder with new tech.
I think the nonstop stream of information and AI slop and an apparent, obvious, painful gap between societal issues and new gimmicky window dressing constantly being peddled to investors claiming to solve problems that don’t exist or don’t require hardware or software solutions just really drained the joy out of me.
Perhaps this is just what growing up is - I seem to care more about honest utility and physical life than wow factor now and it’s making my life and identity very weird.

I spent 4 years learning Blender only to adopt generative models because they give me the results I want faster because I simply always want the straightest path to executing a vision I see in my head.
I used to paint. Then photo. Then video. Then VR. Then AR. I fucking even used Touchdesigner.
But alas.
A child on the internet will now kill me because I used generative AI.

Last summer I was sobbing my eyes out in front of the Brooklyn Public Library near Prospect Park and a stranger left an ice cream sandwich with the kindest note next to me and I still carry that note in my bag. NYC is unbeatable in the warm months. I love ice cream sammys

There’s been studies on abused animals being unable to leave their cages even when the door is left wide open. Certain trauma physically changes the brain in ways that makes it extremely difficult to do things. Can’t logic your way out of a survival mode that’s at a primal level, sometimes it really takes external help and intervention to finally be able to do the thing

I used to look at science fiction in awe as a kid, dreaming about utopian futures where we’d completely reverse global warming and build cities that were completely sustainable and in sync with nature, where kids could be nurtured to pursue all their interests using a limitless library of all human knowledge, and we would cure diseases and preserve endangered species and explore space without leaving any garbage behind us, and we would find a way to distribute resources to everyone in need so no one on the planet had to suffer.
Instead I get to live in a world where hatred gets monetized.

I’ll make a longer writeup or video about the process eventually but tl;dr:
- class three underbite
- 1.5 years in braces, surgery, another year of braces, veneers for the upper 6 teeth due to underdevelopment
- I am still numb in a quarter of my mouth
- I still cannot open my mouth all the way
- It was a difficult surgery and a difficult recovery. And recovery is LONG. Swelling takes over a year to fully go down.
I never want to ever be in the hospital ever again 🫶🏻

The first time I dissociated was in spring 2017. I was walking to class from Union Square and had just had a panic attack. I started trying to count all the dogs I saw on the street to keep myself from collapsing.
A little while later, a woman stopped me on the street. She saw I had painted a denim jacket on and asked me where I got it. I said I painted it. She and I later got coffee and she commissioned me to paint some flowers on the back of her jacket. She was in her 60s, also an artist. Taught at Columbia. She told me about how life was like in the city when she was young. We talked a lot about art. It felt like someone finally saw me.
I haven’t kept in touch with her but I genuinely do think it was an act of God to keep me from killing myself then.
