Of course you’d say all that, When you’re the one who inherited the benefits of empire, conquest, and industrialisation, it’s easy to sing hymns about British greatness. You don’t have to feel the guilt, because you’ve already pocketed the rewards. But let’s not pretend this glorified version of history tells the full story ……or that it absolves the very real damage Britain left in its wake.
Yes, Britain gave the world Newton, Darwin, antibiotics, Shakespeare, and The Beatles …but it also left scars that are still bleeding. The same empire you’re praising ripped apart nations with arbitrary borders that fuel civil wars to this day. It exploited millions through colonisation, looted wealth, crushed cultures, and enslaved people …all under the banners of "civilisation" and "progress." You talk about building hospitals and railways, but don’t mention who paid for them …..in blood, in resources, in dignity. You didn’t build those for the benefit of the colonised; you built them to extract more from them……Let’s talk about the wars you conveniently frame as noble. Britain bombed Iraq under false pretences, killed women and children in Libya, and played its part in the carnage of Vietnam. You champion British defiance in WWII , and yes, standing up to fascism matters …..but you forget the hypocrisy of fighting tyranny abroad while ruling with an iron fist at home in the colonies.
And then there’s the environment. The Industrial Revolution you proudly claim helped drive us into a climate crisis that now threatens all life on Earth. The factories and steam engines weren't just progress …..they were the beginning of relentless exploitation of nature for short-term gain. Now, much of the Global South bears the brunt of climate change that was kickstarted by Western greed.
So yes, Britain changed the world. But not all change is progress, and not all legacy is something to celebrate. You can't keep waving the Union Jack while ignoring the cost others paid for your pride. Our future doesn’t depend on blind nostalgia ….it depends on finally being honest about the past.
Britain doesn’t need a scroll. It needs a mirror.
