You may have heard that a research proposal called DEFUSE lays out a blueprint for the creation of COVID. You may also know that other scientists brush off DEFUSE because the risky virology was to take place in North Carolina. Today new docs obtained by me indicate American scientists misled DARPA about the DEFUSE proposal. They indicate some risky virology in DEFUSE was slated for Wuhan under inadequate biosafety conditions. "PD" = Peter Daszak "BRS" = Baric, Ralph S. usrtk.org/covid-19-origins/a…

In a POLITICO profile today, I’m described by a virologist as investigating the lab leak theory out of “deliberate malice and scientific ignorance.” If you’re coming to my page from that profile, please allow me to clarify my actual motivations. The Biden administration has abrogated its responsibility to do an after-action report or assign a national bipartisan commission to investigate the pandemic’s origin. Across several U.S. agencies, there are a lot of cans of worms that such an investigation could crack open. So it’s largely up to the Fourth Estate to set the record straight for historians. In the absence of any meaningful errors in my reporting to spotlight, virologist Stephen Goldstein told POLITICO that I’m not credible because I’m really more of an activist. In my prior job in corporate media I quoted Goldstein in one of my first stories about this subject, about the 2021 kerfuffle between Sen. Rand Paul and Tony Fauci. The conclusion I was led to believe by Goldstein and other virologists was that the work funded by NIAID in Wuhan did not qualify as gain-of-function research. That was false. In fact, NIH had changed the website defining "gain-of-function research" to disguise the fact that Fauci had perjured himself. NIH eventually conceded to funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Subsequent emails obtained under FOIA have demonstrated that Fauci knew NIAID had funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan by early 2020. So how did Goldstein, an expert virologist, get it wrong? It turns out, other emails FOIA'd by @JamesCTobias demonstrated that Goldstein was on an email chain with NIAID and with EcoHealth's Peter Daszak denigrating news articles about the research in Wuhan in the fall after that summer hearing. Fauci's aide for twenty years, David Morens, was also Daszak's friend and mentor, and was on this email chain. The incentive to make a show of defending the reputation of NIAID was of course immense. NIAID controls millions in virology grants and had an enormous interest in downplaying the possibility of a catastrophic leak from an NIAID-connected lab. While privy to these conversations with Daszak and Morens, Goldstein postured to the press as an independent voice. In short, I won’t be scolded about my journalism by a source I consider to be duplicitous. The duplicity comes into play in the POLITICO story. Goldstein casts the DEFUSE proposal — which describes generating viruses just like SARS-CoV-2 — as just some unfunded UNC grant. He must know, because we reported it, that notes in the margins of the draft showed an intention to outsource the key experiments to Wuhan. The origins of COVID-19 is an expansive story involving coverups by the world’s two leading superpowers, complex and competing scientific claims, millions in government grants and contracts, and unrevealed classified intelligence. There is still a lot more to do!

New docs reveal quarterly contacts between Ralph Baric, who exported blueprints for creating coronaviruses to the Wuhan lab, and America’s top spy agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Baric was also approached by the CIA about a coronavirus project in 2015. ODNI in 2021 dismissed intel pointing to a lab leak as “misinformation.” This risked implicating Baric — their own bioengineering expert. Tulsi Gabbard totally disbanded the ODNI biological threats office earlier this year following questions from me about its suppression of intel.

Fauci appears to be redefining "gain-of-function research" in order to escape a perjury conviction. The National Counterproliferation and Biosecurity Center: The head of the NCBC called the lab leak theory a conspiracy theory in 2020. (More on this from me soon.) 3. Did you know that a scientist at the center of the lab leak theory is connected to Fauci’s inner circle? We’re publishing new emails of David Morens, an aide to Fauci for decades. Morens was also a mentor and drinking buddy of EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak, whose collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology is at the center of concerns about a lab leak in Wuhan. Daszak’s NIH grant was suspended in 2020 and he was asked to get data from the Wuhan lab. Morens brags in a new email that they helped get EcoHealth more money than was lost. “Lots of folks outside nih are working on it.” This could refer to private donations or to money from the Pentagon. The NIH grant was suspended in the spring. That summer, $18 million flowed from the Pentagon to EcoHeath. We never got the data from Wuhan. Why are we only just learning about this? Reminder: Congress unanimously passed a law last year to declassify intel related to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
In Early 2020, A Chinese Source Trusted By FBI Said Covid Leaked From Wuhan Lab, Sources Say FBI’s entire 25-person Chinese intelligence squad knew of reliable human intelligence that SARS-CoV-2 Covid leaked from a lab by @shellenberger and @galexybrane FBI Director Christopher Wray testifies during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on September 24, 2020, five months after the FBI allegedly received information that Covid resulted from a Wuhan, China lab leak. (Photo By Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images/Pool) Over the last several months, Public has reported on a growing body of evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the Covid pandemic escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China. Last year, Public and Racket were the first to report that US government officials had identified that the first patients to become sick with Covid worked at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). Now, Public has learned from multiple sources that the FBI knew since at least March 2020 that Covid was the result of a lab leak. A Chinese national from Wuhan, working as a confidential human source (CHS) for the FBI, told their handler at the FBI’s Chinese Intelligence Squad. The sources said it was probable that the whole squad of 25 people knew. “A person working at the Virology Institute lab in Wuhan, China was infected, left the building, and spread the virus outside the lab in Wuhan,” the CHS told the FBI, according to a source. “It didn’t have anything to do with the wet market or the bat soup story they were going with.” The sources asked Public to protect their identities and those of their colleagues. The sources say they are speaking up now out of concern over abuses of power within the FBI. They reached out to Public after seeing our story yesterday about how scientists, who Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) had in the past funded, sought to insert a furin cleavage site right where it exists on SARS-CoV-2. The sources added that the FBI trusted the CHS because the person’s information had been corroborated at least three times previously. “The CHS was from Wuhan, had been vetted, and the person had provided information on three prior occasions that they were able to corroborate as true and reliable.” Another source said the FBI had considered the information “good intel.”

I just finished reading all 69 pages of the new MAHA Commission report. Here are some of the statistics I found most shocking: - 40% of children have a chronic condition. - 75% of young people are ineligible for military service due to medical issues. - Obesity has jumped 270% since the 1970s. - For teenagers, social media is a full-time job. They average 9 hours of non-school screentime everyday. A separate study found that 46% of teens report being online “almost constantly.” - At the FDA, 70% of medical reviewers go on to work for the pharmaceutical industry. - NIH only devotes 4-5% of its budget to nutrition research. - A push for cheaper food came at the expense of nutrition. Cheap ultra-processed foods are not cost-free when it comes to health. But 70% of a child’s diet is now made up of ultraprocessed foods. - Americans get 50% of their calories from ultraprocessed foods vs. 10-31% in Portugal, Italy and France. - Ultraprocessed grains, sugars, & fats comprise 2/3rds of American calories. These can mess with fullness cues and lead to overeating. - A 10% increase in the consumption of ultraprocessed foods was associated with a 14% increase in all-cause mortality in a JAMA Internal Medicine study. - Farmers only receive 16 cents of every dollar spent on food, with the remaining 84 cents absorbed by manufacturers, marketers and distributors. - 95% of members of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Council had a conflict of interest in 2020. - Support for organic food farming only accounted for 0.1% of the 2018 Farm Bill. - Infants put their hands in their mouths 10 times per hour, leading to increased exposure to toxins. - 90% of homes have residues of at least one insecticide on their floors. - A meta-analysis of 74 studies found an association between fluoride and IQ decline in children – a concern we were told was a conspiracy theory. - The U.S. ranked 47th out of 50 countries in an international study of aerobic fitness of children. - 15% of young men report no close friendships, a fivefold increase since 1990. - Since 1986 the number of vaccines on the childhood schedule has increased from 3 injections to 29 by one year of age. Some comparable nations (Denmark) have half as many. - Pharma funds five times as many clinical trials than every U.S. agency, including NIH, combined. This means that a lot of patient-level data is not available for scientists to independently check, as companies consider it proprietary. - Two editors of major medical journals received payments from the pharmaceutical industry greater than $1 million in 2014. A former editor of the prestigious British Medical Journal (The BMJ) said that “medical journals are an extension of the marketing arm of pharmaceutical companies.” - Half of DSM-5 decisionmakers had a conflict of interest, and their recommendations relaxed criteria for ADHD and bipolar disorder, driving up prescriptions.

Biggest news is perhaps confirmation that Beijing authorities investigated the Wuhan Institute of Virology in early 2020 and tested workers for exposure to the virus. Recall that this is also when Beijing ordered all viral samples incinerated. The Wuhan Institute of Virology planned to study "epidemic viruses from pangolin samples" in fall 2019. The Wuhan Institute of Virology researchers got sick with COVID-ish symptoms but were not hospitalized. The US intelligence services say they were "unable to confirm if any of them handled live viruses in the work they performed prior to falling ill," even though their public scientific reports & grants show they handled live viruses. No mention of the missing Wuhan Institute of Virology database. Bottom line: These powerful intelligence agencies claim to know embarrassingly little. odni.gov/files/ODNI/document…

20 years ago, the National Academies specified the "seven deadly sins" - seven types of experiments that should not be done. Today virologists perform many of these experiments routinely.
What is one important thing you learned?

Former CDC Director Susan Monarez's Senate testimony was supposed to preempt tomorrow's meeting of the CDC's vaccine panel, the ACIP. That seemed to be the intent of Sen. Bill Cassidy. Instead it raised major questions about whether Monarez EVER supported MAHA. There were even signs she is part of a Democrat op to undermine Trump. Monarez couldn't provide details about: - When she began communicating with her anti-Trump lawyers. - Why she kicked political appointees off her floor. - Specific issues with Kennedy's appointments to the ACIP, only stating that people in the "medical community" had expressed concerns. - Who told her that there would be changes to the childhood vaccine schedule and what those changes would be. -  What evidence exists for administering vaccines for Hep B, an STD, in infancy, or COVID vaccines to children at six months.  Does this sound like someone who resigned in principled integrity over vaccine policy, or a Democrat bureaucrat reflexively opposed to Trump?

The hearing is getting underway. I'll live tweet observations here. 🧵 Democrats are seeking to treat the issue of poorly regulated gain-of-function research in Wuhan funded by NIAID and a conspiracy to evade FOIA within his office as "discrete" from Fauci. One big, obvious challenge for Democrats: Fauci led NIAID.
Did Fauci lie to Congress under questioning by Sen. Rand Paul? Is there cause to Prosecute/Fauci? EXPLAINER in light of recent evidence: Fauci’s prepared testimony makes a distinction between the “general understanding” of gain-of-function research and ePPPs (“enhanced pandemic potential pathogens”). Gain-of-function: Experiments that make ANY virus more deadly. ePPPs: Experiments that make viruses that are already very deadly and capable of uncontrollable spread even more deadly. Fauci claims when asked about gain-of-function research he replied “no” because he was really referring to ePPPs. He makes a distinction between a "generalist" understanding of “gain of function” and a “more technical” (presumably more sophisticated) understanding (ePPPs). This is dishonest for several reasons: 1. There was no general understanding of gain-of-function research before his prominent showdown with Sen. Paul. It’s only the general understanding of the definition now because it’s the accurate one. 2. “Gain-of-function” was the term of art when the experiments under scrutiny were approved by NIAID (2014-2016). 3. NIAID removed the definition of “gain-of-function” on its website shortly after Fauci began tussling with Sen. Paul about this in hearings. 4. EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak himself referred to some of the experiments at hand as “gain-of-function.” 5. Fauci met with coronavirologist Ralph Baric to discuss “chimeras” (engineered viruses) in February 2020. In his transcribed interview, Baric testified that he and Fauci were discussing whether or not his experiments were properly regulated. He argued that because the bat coronaviruses he engineered were equally as deadly and infectious as SARS (which is indeed an ePPP) it was a retention of function experiment, not gain of function. Unfortunately for both Baric and Fauci, we obtained a letter to Baric via FOIA showing that NIAID defined experiments on bat coronaviruses with the potential to amp up binding to human receptors, regardless of pathogenicity, as gain-of-function. It shows Baric's experiments met NIAID's internal definition of gain-of-function research. Because NIAID regulations on gain-of-function research are porous, Fauci appears to believe he can single-handedly and retrospectively re-define the term. At the same time, he has totally disputed any responsibility for overseeing the experiments. This is untenable and given the one million Americans who have died from COVID, inexcusable. Email suggests Fauci was involved in some kind of "damage control" related to EcoHealth Alliance in April 2020. Top aide to Fauci relays rumor to EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak that Fauci was doing damage control related to his grant. The "Lauer letter" likely refers to a letter from NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research Michael Lauer to EcoHealth seeking more information about the group's work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology as a condition of the continuation of its NIH funding. h/t email maven @Rebecca21951651 ecohealthalliance.org/2024/0… wsj.com/articles/nih-presses…

"Dr. Fauci, You deserve better than this," Democrats keep saying. Reminder that this is the OVERSIGHT committee, which is supposed to provide oversight of the government. When Fauci's contacts in the Democratic Party and the media are long gone, historians are going to marvel that we coddled the government official who may have overseen the worst regulatory failure in history like a vulnerable child.

The Defense Intelligence Agency knew by June 2020 that COVID could have been engineered using a technique called Golden Gate Assembly with tools called Type II restriction enzymes. A scientific paper making the same point was dismissed by virologist Kristian Andersen as "kindergarten microbiology" and has never found a publisher in the deeply corrupt scientific publishing industry.

NIAID scrubbed the definition of gain-of-function research overnight. The change was made when grant reports made it unambiguous that Fauci funded research to make coronaviruses more dangerous in Wuhan, including research that increased the viral load by 10,000 times. web.archive.org/web/20211021…
I am not a lawyer, but it’s hard for me to see how this is not perjury. The EcoHealth grant describes GOFRoC. And there were several other GOFRoC studies that we know NIAID funded; the agency is named in the papers’ acknowledgments!

A month after "Proximal Origin" published saying no lab origin scenario was plausible, its lead author wrote: "I’m still not fully convinced that no [cell] culture was involved ...We also can't fully rule out engineering." This should clear up any lingering ambiguity. They lied.
Scientists studying Covid's origin told Congress last week that they were practicing science. But newly released private messages show Fauci's advisors knew they couldn't show a natural spillover had occurred and thought a lab leak was possible long after claiming otherwise.

The origin of COVID has been the subject of years of debate, Twitter bickering, and propaganda. So it’s a surprise to many of us that there are tools designed to dispassionately assess the origins of epidemics, including something called a modified Grunow–Finke assessment tool, which is used by the U.S. military. A new paper in Risk Analysis applies the modified Grunow–Finke assessment tool to the origins of COVID and finds that a lab origin is more likely than a zoonotic origin with a score of 68%. Applying 11 criteria, the authors found COVID to be more characteristic of an unnatural pandemic than a natural one. Virologists who say COVID is natural often compare it to other coronavirus epidemics — MERS and SARS. But the new paper demonstrates COVID is very different from those outbreaks in its genome (ideally positioned furin cleavage site); its spread (millions of deaths vs. 894 MERS deaths and 811 SARS deaths); its proximity to a high security lab; the uncertain transmission routes from animals; and the virus’ strong binding affinity for human receptors. Biosecurity expert Raina MacIntyre says: “Our research shows that we should not dismiss a lab leak as a fringe conspiracy theory. The motives and vested interests of anyone who is desperate to do so should be questioned.” onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Peter Hotez has spent years trying to suppress discussion of American ties to Wuhan research as akin to violence. He has spent years smearing a congressional investigation into the matter with melodramatic rhetoric about Stalin. Oversight of government (and publicly funded research) is essential to democracy. His ahistorical statements about Stalin are projection. Hotez’s actions seeking to shield himself as above reproach are straight out of an authoritarian’s playbook. All the while, research projects listed as involving his NIAID funding involved: 1. the chimeric viruses being scrutinized by the committee and 2. Zhou Yusen, a virologist at the center of speculation about a lab leak in Wuhan. We now know he knew about EcoHealth’s withholding of docs from the committee and the evasion of FOIA. Frankly I have always been put off by someone relentlessly casting themselves as a victim amid a pandemic that killed millions and cost trillions — a pandemic that may stem in part from the lax biosafety and biosecurity culture that Hotez participated in. My question is *why* he invested years in trying to suppress and stigmatize the committee’s investigation? God this is so depressing. American scientists, most prominently Fauci, knew right away that a lab origin was credible but lied about it, and that lie lives on in tweets like this. The Narrative matters more than a million dead. Nothing darker than that.
Fox News, Newsmax, and House Republicans are desperately trying to revive covid conspiracy theories this morning by somehow pinning the pandemic on Fauci -- the one guy in Trump's orbit who was sane and rational throughout the ordeal. They don't want to have a reality-based conversation about who really botched things and who guided us out of the worst of it.

Four times Fauci perjured himself in a House hearing last year: #1: “I’m saying no because I’ve said no multiple times.” Fauci, his program officers and the virologists he funded have massaged the definition of gain-of-function research to mean: altering an already pathogenic or pandemic capable virus; altering a virus to have a one log increase in growth; or altering a virus to have the same pathogenicity of SARS. All of these definitions are incorrect. NIAID’s own definition of gain-of-function research at the time of the experiments was to increase the pathogenicity or transmissibility of ANY virus. Documents obtained from FOIA show that the experiments were internally referred to as “gain-of-function” over and over again. For example, when NIH-funded experiments conducted with the Wuhan Institute of Virology first drew attention in the early pandemic period, Fauci wrote: “Hugh … you will have tasks today that must be done,” in an email to his aide Hugh Auchincloss, attaching the paper to the email under an abbreviation: “SARS gain-of-function.”

SCOOP: How the Deep State suppressed intel about a likely WUHAN LAB LEAK. SIGINT pointed to an emergency in Wuhan in 2019. Elite spy scientists said the genomic analysis pointed to Wuhan's labs. But Deep State insiders, some with political science degrees, prioritized FAUCI and his handpicked scientists who called it a "conspiracy theory." DNI TULSI GABBARD exclusively tells me she is investigating where U.S. funds may have helped create COVID-19. "It is clear that dissenting views were likely silenced to support the Biden Administration’s preferred narrative. Under President Trump’s maximum transparency agenda, we’re committed to exposing the truth so that we can build back trust in the intelligence community," she said. CIA spox Liz Lyons says JOHN RATCLIFFE will continue to "root out politicization" of intel on this issue.
