I don't stop often enough to look back and think of how far I've come..
I'm beyond grateful for the success I've had on @contra this year on top of my FT job. I've always said I did freelancing on the side but this year was the first time, in many years, that I feel like I was really working as a freelancer on my free-time.
It was a mix of having a bit of luck but also being ready to act on it!
And I couldn't have done it without @contra and @framer which have been game changers for me in the last 12ish months.
Coming from a poor family in Brazil, no money to get a design degree, major imposter syndrome for years, anxiety, many underpaid/overworked jobs, working 3 jobs at one point just to break even, things like investing money and traveling abroad were not a reality.
The younger me could only dream of living in NYC, travel, work as a product designer in tech, and now being able to generate a good amount of income on the side doing what I love doing.
I'm also super grateful for Twitter/X and all the people I follow here that inspire and share their knowledge on this platform. There's so much value for free in this community and I have immense gratitude. If I follow you, thank you for contributing, even if you don't know you did! 🫶
What a hell of a journey and I'm more excited than ever to keep going!

Love @framer — but there’s one big issue.
Almost all the clients I work with ask for an edit access to tweak or work on small updates with me.
and that is very practical.
If you give a client editor access, they can duplicate your whole project.
No way to lock ownership or protect work until the final payment is made.
There should be an option to lock remixing links on Editor Access.
I already lost $1000 with a client.
He made the upfront > completed the project > client wanted to work on contents and some images > gave access and boom ghosted now.
Any thoughts?

This is something i learned from @DannPetty's courses. Don't waste your clients time. Give them a reference of how much projects usually cost up front.
Even if it is above their budget, sometimes they are willing to increase their budget to work with you. Sometimes you may be willing to lower your price to work with them and sometimes it's just not a fit, and that's ok!
This freelancer designer making $146,000+ on Contra reveals pricing to clients even before the initial/discovery call
This controversial approach is prefect for designers who don't feel comfortable with sales
Because it doesn't put you on the spot during a live client call to come up with a number
It also saves a lot of time because if your pricing is above the client's budget then no point in doing a discovery call

Because everyone here only posts wins like closing new clients, invoice payment screenshots creating a flex culture where newbie freelance designers feel like they can never be successful
No one is sharing behind the scenes of how all this happens! Like how do you actually close a client in the DMs? Do you share pricing upfront or only after the initial discovery call?
My assumption was that the higher your X following the more inbound work you would get. So then the only strategy is to share cool design work and grow your presence on here right?
But then this freelancer defies all those rules because he has only 3,000 followers but is killing it. After seeing his DMs I realized a genius strategy at play:

I like the idea of exposing bad clients but it may just create a ton of drama and headache for you.
FWIW for clients that you would agree to pay through @contra, if set it up as escrow payments with 50% upfront, Contra will release the funds in ~5 days if the client ghosts. Happened to me and saved me some headache.

I love finding these little surprises in @Framer, traditionally if you already had an element formatted for all breakpoints and decided to make a component out of it, it'd only bring the primary and wipe out all the smaller breakpoints. Not anymore! this made my day 🤩
