How to be more cultured and disgustingly educated in 2026: 1. Read classic fiction books. Dostoevsky, Dickens, Hardy, Austen, Woolf, etc. 2. Read essays and op-ed articles on various topics like geopolitics, tech, history, philosophy, economics, etc. 3. Listen to classical music and learn to match the sound to composer. 4. Learn the differences between the major art movements (impressionism, expressionism, realism and surrealism). Bonus: apply what you learn and visit a gallery. 5. Learn a new language or improve the one you’re already learning to fluency. 6. Write articles on things that interest you e.g. a movie you watched, a poster you saw, a trip you just had. Allow yourself to express your views and challenge them as well. In your words. 7. Watch films from different directors or films based in different countries (bonus if it’s in a different language- with subtitles ofc). 8. Go to the theatre. 9. Learn to play, or improve your chess game. 10. Attend a local lecture. Universities near you will do them for free or find something like Lectures on Tap to support professors, experts and storytellers who teach you.

From someone who has habitually read at least 1 book a week for the last 3 years, here's some practical advice on reading: 1) Atomic Habits is just as overrated as 48 Laws of Power and overhyped like The Alchemist. Please, in 2024, explore more books. You'll find that "everyone's favourite" is just hype more than substance. 2) Read more history, maybe Greek mythology, or try some autobiographies. Read about technology, politics, or philosophy. You don't have to like every genre, but definitely don't stay linear with book choices. You end up just feeding into confirmation bias and you don't get to exercise critical thinking. 3) Divide your TBR list so it has balance. For example, my reading list this year is 150 books, 50% of which are fictional. Exercising your imagination is just as powerful as knowledge accumulation. 4) Yes– I count articles and long think pieces/opinion columns as part of reading. There are incredible writers around who share their invaluable thoughts and ideas on a variety of topics online (blog form) and they're just as informative– and at times, even moving– as those books in stores. 5) Read because you fear stupidity and ignorance. In a "cost of intellect crisis", knowledge is currency and being intelligent is sexy.

Where every book you read, every conversation you overhear, every fleeting moment of silence is another piece of the puzzle to the big picture, another thread to weave into your craft/work. It’s not balance. It’s not moderation. It’s the kind of singular focus that borders on possession. The greats weren't just talented; they were consumed...and if you're not willing to be consumed, to dissolve into the fire of your own ambition, then the pantheon is not for you.

Emerging markets, particularly Africa, are massively undervalued. In crypto, no one is even talking about it. If you think stablecoins have found PMF in the West, imagine its value for the rest of the world? Here's my hypothesis that no one asked for: > VCs think the returns on emerging markets are too slow > capital is circulating in the usual areas–– SF, NYC, Beijing, LDN. VCs don't want to miss out on these high-talent densities so they double down there instead of spreading their bets elsewhere > there's definitely an assumption on emerging markets not being "high quality" enough as far as talent + product (huge oversight and bias-driven!) > emerging markets are often associated with volatile currencies, so not enough scalability and liquidity > founders who usually want to serve emerging markets are mostly black and brown founders...do I need to explain more?

Any bounty/hackathon track you allow for winners to be determined via "community voting" just ends up being a popularity contest btw. Stop doing them. Find judges who can make the executive decision to reward people rightfully. Otherwise you're wasting people's time and talent.

House of Commons last week, House of Lords this week. 🫡 Fascinating to see a packed Roundtable and a large audience present, all keen to talk about how blockchain can make the public sector more efficient and innovative, taking lessons from the DOGE initiative in the US. I have to admit, personally, I fear we’re not yet ready. Some of my reasons (and some takeaways from the session) are: > We still synonymously use blockchain and crypto. The discussion quickly shifted to DeFi, tokenisation, etc.—we really need to decouple these asap if we want to develop faster as an industry > We have the same champions in Parliament (Is it increasing? Hard to tell…) and I’m convinced the real impact is in converting the Neutral and Non-believers to become more open to use cases of the tech > Before the govt. can even think about using blockchain in their internal systems and processes, answers are still pending on legislations and regulations for the industry. Non-negotiable if we want the hoi polloi to adopt the innovation too > Trust is an inherent aspect of the foundations of decentralised technology. But how is it that many people still do not trust the technology itself? Other verticals of tech like AI, quantum computing, biotech, and even data centres are taking most of the mindshare of govt. Why is blockchain not front of mind? > Media has a huge responsibility to cover and publish pro-blockchain stories and stop picking at low-hanging fruits that perpetuate the negative narrative surrounding the industry, especially re. crypto. Let’s move on > Legacy protection is a huge aspect within the UK culture. I think one the things it wants to hold onto (and protect) is the claim that London is a global financial hub. We can’t do that if we’re fighting tooth and nail re. this tech that makes internet capital markets accessible, and possible I do think we are inching closer to progress, but managing expectations on speed and depth is important. Silicon Valley, and most of venture across the EU, have deep pockets for African startups—if you’re not African. 🤪 Non-African founders getting backed to build in Africa, when there are Nigerians, Kenyans, South Africans and Mauritians building incredible startups who know the continent 10x better and have network and talent to fly in the continent is nothing but, what? 👂🏽
