San Francisco’s population is back to 2012 levels, but City Hall has 7,000 more employees than it did then. That staffing increase almost exactly matches the $1.5 billion deficit projected for 2030. Rolling back to 2012 staffing would close the gap.
The SF budget is big... really big. Like bigger than 17 states big! And our per-capita spending is twice that of our peer cities! And yes, for the budget nerds, we're only looking at combined city-and-counties, and even removed the enterprise departments growsf.org/research/2025-04-…

My wife just got home from seeing John Mulaney at the Golden Gate Theatre tonight (Tenderloin). Her comments: * OMG that area is awful * Yes, he joked negatively about San Francisco * There are so many drug dealers and drug users * I didn't feel safe walking out to the car to get back home * I won't see a show there again What is wrong with this city? How can you have world class theaters and acts and not keep the surrounding areas safe and clean?? I am so proud of San Francisco and so proud that I'm raising my kids here, but our city needs new leadership. Vote on November 5. growsf.org/voter-guide/

Outdoor dining is one of the best things to happen in San Francisco recently. But two years ago Dean Preston tried to kill outdoor dining forever. Every day that Dean Preston is a supervisor, San Francisco will get worse. We must vote him out as soon as possible.
Reason #15 to Dump Dean Preston: Outdoor dining saved countless small businesses during Covid, but Dean tried to kill the program. Dean Preston supported Aaron Peskin's attempt to kill the outdoor dining program by making it illegal to secure the spaces overnight.

So let me get this straight: if the Great Highway turns into a full time park, the distance for a driver to go from the Richmond to Daly City will be... exactly the same? What am I missing here? Why are people upset about this?
When discussing the Great Highway in San Francisco, it’s important to understand these points: 1. What’s already been decided? 2. What’s proposed for the future? 3. What’s staying the same? Watch this short video or read a longer explanation here: engardio.com/blog/great-high… WHAT’S ALREADY BEEN DECIDED Both directions of the Great Highway south of Sloat are set to close due to coastal erosion. This has already been legislated. That means we will never again be able to use the Great Highway as a direct connection to Daly City and the 280. Traffic from Daly City will have to use Skyline and go around the zoo. Traffic from San Francisco will need to turn left at Sloat and continue south past Lake Merced. WHAT’S PROPOSED FOR THE FUTURE Without a direct connection to Daly City, we have to think about what is the best use of the section between Lincoln and Sloat. This is an opportunity to reimagine the space for the next century as an oceanside park. This includes improving traffic flow on Lincoln and Sunset Boulevard to get people where they need to go. WHAT’S STAYING THE SAME The Great Highway will remain open to cars 24/7 from the Richmond neighborhoods to Lincoln allowing full access to the Cliff House, Beach Chalet, soccer fields, the Ocean Beach parking lot, and anywhere in the Sunset from Lincoln. Read more here: engardio.com/blog/great-high…

Ezra is right. Our policies and politicians have made it impossible to build, blocking critical infrastructure and driving up the cost of living. California has given me everything. My parents immigrated here in 1983. They opened a small restaurant, bought a modest home, and sent me to great public schools. That dream is out of reach today because bad policies have made housing unaffordable. We should be growing, welcoming families like mine once was. Instead, our population is shrinking. We aren’t building homes. We can’t even build a train line. The greatest place in the world—rich in talent and resources—is being squandered by politicians who refuse to act. That’s why winning elections and electing pro-growth leaders matters. We’ve made progress in SF, but there’s more to do.
If liberals do not want Americans to turn to the false promise of strongmen, they need to offer the fruits of effective government. But that means admitting where the governments they run have gone wrong.

The Whole Foods on 8th and Market opened in March of 2022 and closed just a year later. In my opinion, it was one of the biggest blows to San Francisco. A large business invested a lot in our city, and they couldn't survive. Now, 18 months later, things haven't gotten better. The drug markets are very active and crime is rampant. Mid Market should be one of the greatest areas in San Francisco, but we let it be a containment zone for drugs and other illegal activity.
Mid Market cannot be allowed to fail. If downtown is truly become a 24/7 neighborhood, people have to feel safe enough going out at night.

I just walked along Market from Franklin to 10th St. The area is really struggling, even compared to just a few months ago. Most businesses have closed, condo developments have paused construction, there's little foot traffic. Inside the (former) Twitter building, all the restaurants are shuttered. The Market (grocery store) is still open but most food vendors are gone and most shelves are empty. I hope new companies take over the spaces vacated by Twitter, Uber, Block, etc and residential construction gets going again, but it's going to take many years for this area to turn around. 😢

Today we delivered enough (& more) signatures to recall Commissioners Lopez, Collins & Moliga. Today we ensured the voice of the people resounds loud and clear through City Hall. Today we launched a revolution to put students first in our public education system. Thank you SF!

"If you are selling drugs in this city, we are coming after you." Mayor @DanielLurie is not fucking around.
We had a multi-agency operation in Jefferson Square Park in Western Addition last night, targeting the drug market there. Dozens of arrests were made. I want everyone to hear this: if you are selling drugs in this city, we are coming after you. sfstandard.com/2025/02/27/je…

Supervisor races cost just a few hundred thousand dollars and are won by just hundreds of votes. Common sense won in 2022 and we’ll win again in 2024 because residents are fed up with incompetence. Follow and donate to @GrowSF

The School Board recall needs $30k NOW to hit their next signature goal. I'm matching up to $10k to make this happen. This is the most impactful thing you can do to help fix San Francisco. Send me a screenshot after you donate so I can match.

The SF progressives are lost. They tried to organize a rally in front of @ycombinator HQ today. It failed. * It was organized by a PR agency based in Berkeley, not grassroots at all * Only about 15 people showed up * YC is one of the greatest supporters of immigration, innovation, jobs, and tech. Companies coming out of YC are literally saving lives and helping humanity * Dean Preston was supposed to show up but didn't * I guess no one sent a memo to @Ahsha_Safai (sponsor of Prop B, Cop Tax) that the rally was a bust because he was there 😂
Replying to @metaversehell
Anyway, TL;DR is there was a tiny turnout. Rally was organized by “The Worker Agency” a “policy and communications firm” based in Berkeley.

Notable: the Family Zoning Plan barely passed 4–3. Three commissioners voted against legalizing homes—even at the risk of a state takeover. They were appointed by past Boards of Supervisors. To build the housing we need, SF must elect a pro-growth Board that can appoint pro-growth commissioners across every city function.
Big win: The Planning Commission approved Mayor Lurie’s Family Zoning Plan! 🎉 This plan legalizes 36,000 new homes by eliminating outdated zoning rules. Next stop: Board of Supervisors. Let’s build the homes San Francisco families need. 🏘️ growsf.org/news/2025-09-12-p…

This perfectly summarizes where San Francisco is politically at this moment. We're frustrated by the performative politics, and demanding our government provide the basics: safe streets and good schools. We made huge progress in 2022. But there's still more to do. Follow @GrowSF
Asian Americans to Democrats: "we want safe streets, good schools and less progressive ideology." That's the message and 2024 warning from San Francisco. Footnote about our unfortunate experience at the end. @OutFrontCNN story features @JoelEngardio. Producer: @jasonkCNN

You would think an unqualified city supervisor would at least hire someone to make sure they don’t tweet dumb shit, but I guess not.

It’s not just San Francisco. San Jose is also seeing a pro growth shift thanks to Mayor @MattMahanSJ. I hope he runs for Governor of California. We need more common sense leadership.
I’ve never seen this many people at City Hall — I guess FISHER is a bigger draw than our weekly council meetings 😂 Thanks to @sanjosefoos for bringing thousands to experience all our downtown has to offer. Excited to continue making room for large events like this one as we approach 2026!

The group that runs Outside Lands and other loved concert venues wants to invest $15M into the Castro Theater, which has been shut down for years. But our Supervisors and NIMBY neighborhood groups are trying to exhort them to make concessions. This is corruption.
I'm just saying that local government shouldn't be in the business of extortion. That the Board of Supervisors has this level of dictatorial control over business is a sign of a totally dysfunctional and extractive system. ebar.com/story.php?324185
