Basically anyone old enough to remember 9/11 has it seared into their soul that it's indefensible to solve politics with terrorism. One of his companies is dedicated to eradicating "the soul sucking scourge of traffic" (his words re: boring company). He knows why people like remote work. He just doesn't benefit from it so he masquerades his opinion as virtue. Remote work requires middle managers, which conflicts with Elon's tornado style of direct interaction with the individual contributors. Said differently, Elon's preferred management style is not compatible with remote work. That seems less a criticism of remote work and more a commentary on Elon.
