LAWSUIT SUMMARY: X Corp filed a defamation lawsuit against Media Matters for America and one of its writers, Eric Hananoki. The key allegations are: 1) Media Matters published an article on November 16, 2023 with the headline "X has been placing ads for Apple, Bravo, IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity next to pro-Nazi content." 2) The article claimed that X was responsible for pairing big advertisers' paid posts with racist and anti-Semitic fringe content on its platform. X alleges these claims were false and defamatory. 3) X alleges that Media Matters intentionally manipulated the X platform by creating an account that followed only fringe figures and big advertisers, excessively refreshing its feed, with the intent of generating rare pairings of ads next to objectionable content to take misleading screenshots. 4) X claims Media Matters then omitted the context of its manipulation when publishing the article, intending to create the false impression that such pairings were commonplace on X. 5) After the report, several advertisers including Apple, NBCUniversal, and IBM pulled their advertising from X, allegedly causing harm to X's business. 6) X is suing for defamation, interference with business relationships, and interference with prospective economic advantage. It seeks damages, an injunction requiring Media Matters to remove the article, attorney's fees, and other relief. In summary, X alleges Media Matters knowingly manipulated the X platform to manufacture a misleading narrative that X pairs advertiser content with hate speech, resulting in reputation damage and loss of advertising revenue for X.
