As a former suburban teen, my friends who grew up in the city had the space to explore and master their interests to a degree that I didn’t have the access to do. So no, they didn’t go to cocktail parties, but they had the opportunity to be accomplished artists and have a better understanding of their career options much earlier in life. Also, cities have plenty of age appropriate things for teenagers to do like museums and free concerts. Plus the walkability allows for young people to create their own spaces. The idea that the only thing to do in a city is drink and go to restaurants is a peak level gentrifier take. And I while I have problems with anti-transplant narratives, takes like this are why locals hate us.

as a minority, what really grinds my gears is how the crazy guy on the train always represents all Black and brown people, but never the normal transit rider trying to go home. in my experience, there are more of us in the latter category than the former on any given train car.
the racism and classism here, especially among these tech bros, is astounding transit is a *public service* that should be open to *everyone*, regardless of class, race, etc. and especially with the current storms, many homeless people are just looking for a warm place to be

in walkable cities, driving is an anti-status symbol b/c it means you don’t live in the expensive/cool parts of the city with good transit coverage. which is why those who view car ownership as a status symbol confuse me.
In LA, the way you signal wealth is you drive an exotic car. In NYC, if you have an exotic car, it means you live in New Jersey and cannot afford Manhattan.

when center-left pundits say the groups are ruining the Democratic party, these are the kinds of groups they are talking about. any tenant’s rights org who says 1 million new units in NYC will have no affect on prices is unserious. 1 million new units would create a renters market and give renters more bargaining power.
.@zellnor4ny's platform offers nothing for tenants struggling to stay in their homes right now. Even worse, it undermines rent stabilization, giving landlords more ways to raise rents and push families out. 70% of New Yorkers rent — if you want our votes, freeze the rent.

Suburbanites take more from NYC than they contribute. They want nothing to do with the city, while feeling entitled to constant access on their terms and want the rest of us to be grateful for their presence. No, they crowd the sidewalks, kill pedestrians and cyclists, and trash talk the city with half-baked points from the Post. They can keep it.

This is the dumbest most insensitive shit I read all day. SVB isn’t some shadow agent of Big Tech and VC, they supported hardworking founders, affordable housing, agriculture among other things. My TL and texts are filled with people who are scared. Regular working people won’t get paid next week because of this. Are their livelihoods less important than your ideological vendettas? I don’t deny that wealth inequality is a problem, but I’m tried of bloodthirsty faux progressivism that is more intent on owning the rich rather than protecting workers. It doesn’t do anything but make a handful of smug glitterati types feel good about doing nothing.
