Murray Sinclair was a great Canadian, a great Manitoban, a great Anishinaabe.  His career stands as a legacy of public service and a deep commitment to truth, fairness and dignity for all people.  He was the first Indigenous person to be named to the Manitoba provincial court and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba. He was the first, but he will be remembered as one of the best.  He was appointed co-commissioner of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry, which laid bare systemic racism within the justice system and is considered a foundational perspective on the system’s relationship with Indigenous people. He led the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Inquest and his report spurred systematic change in the delivery of pediatric cardiac care in our province.  The penultimate moment of his career was his work as chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. He approached a process that could have been divisive and instead transformed it into Calls to Action for the future of our country, helping all Canadians to learn to walk together into a future of respect and understanding where we live up to the phrase residential school survivors taught us – Every Child Matters.  It will be a long time before our nation produces another person the calibre of Murray Sinclair. He showed us there is no reconciliation without truth. We should hold dear in our hearts his words that our nation is on the cusp of a great new era and we must all “dare to live greatly together.”  On behalf of the people of Manitoba, I extend my condolences to his family and to all Canadians for the loss of Mazina Giizhik.  A sacred fire will be open to the public on the north side of the legislative building grounds until Murray Sinclair’s funeral later this week.

The first of two kids from Gaza arrived in Manitoba today to get health care services which are impossible for them to get at home. As Manitobans we have always stepped up to help the innocent during times of conflict. To the good people of Manitoba I ask with humility that we set two more spots at our table for these young ones. And to these newest children in our province, I can only imagine what you’ve been through but I want you to know no matter how challenging things get there are always people who will help. You can call them Manitobans and you can call them Canadians. We will support your right to return home when it is safe to do so. But if you decide to make your home here then we will ensure there’s a place for you so you can be a Manitoban and a Canadian too. 🦬 🇨🇦

Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day! It’s a day to lift up our languages, honour our ancestors, and celebrate the strength of our communities.

Universal healthcare is who we are as Canadians. It’s one of the things that sets us a part from the U.S. and we should be proud of that. Let’s keep it strong and make sure it serves everyone, in every region. It’s our heritage, our legacy and something we should all be proud of.

King Charles and I spoke about the wildfires in Manitoba, about building the economy, and how focusing on the climate might help us make investments that connect those issues. Before he left he said we need Indigenous wisdom. 🇨🇦

Our first official visit to the north was amazing. We visited schools to encourage Pimicikamak youth to pursue education & health care careers, and celebrated PCN's new health centre. Can't wait to work together to bring birthing and dialysis services to PCN.

Today, I was deeply honoured as the Lieutenant-Governor invited me to form the next government of Manitoba.

When my dad and uncle were young, they weren’t allowed to vote in this country. On October 3, 2023, my Uncle Fred was the first to raise my hand in the air after the people of Manitoba elected me their 25th Premier. To the young people in our communities: look-you can do it too.

The families we welcomed from Gaza are now getting the medical care they need. I’m reminded of that moment at the airport—when I thanked them for giving us a way to show who we are: kind-hearted people, expressing our humanity in one of the most sacred ways.

I’m running to be Premier ✅ Folks have encouraged me to run & I wanted to let you know that I am — I was honoured to be nominated by the NDP earlier this year. More than anything I wanted to say thanks for the good words you’ve shared with my colleagues & I recently!

Lisa and I have known Cathy for years – as a grand chief, First Nations leader, sundancer and kookum. She was the first woman to be elected as grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs – something that made so many Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in our province proud.  She approached her work with joy, compassion, thoughtfulness and a spirituality that was grounded in the belief that we are all equal in the eyes of the Creator and that we all deserve to live a good life.  I will miss her wise counsel, her drive to get things done and most of all – her hugs. No matter how challenging or difficult any political conversation was, Cathy Merrick always greeted you and said farewell by hugging you.  Searching the landfill for the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, and other important steps to improve the lives of First Nations people in our province, we rededicate these efforts to the memory of the late Cathy Merrick. On behalf of the people of Manitoba, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Cathy’s husband, family, friends and supporters on the loss of 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛.

Because we cut the provincial fuel tax, inflation in Manitoba is now below 1%. Our fuel tax cut also brought down inflation across Canada. Little Manitoba is doing big things!
