President Trump’s latest tariffs are an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses. My government will ensure our response has maximum impact in the US and minimal impact here in Canada, while supporting the workers impacted. My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade.

Thank you, Canada.    Our strength lies in our resolve to work together. United, we will build Canada strong.

In response to President Trump’s tariffs on our auto sector, Canada will impose a 25% tariff on all U.S. vehicle imports that do not comply with our free trade agreement. All revenues from these tariffs will be used to support our Canadian auto workers and their industry.

It has been more than two days that the supply of electricity to Gaza has been shut off. It must resume — essentials including food, electricity, and medical supplies should never be used as political tools. Canada must work with our allies to stand up for international law to promote sustainable peace and security in the Middle East and to support full access to humanitarian aid for Palestinian families. As this work continues, both parties must work towards the return of all hostages and the completion of the ceasefire agreement.

We’re expanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Starting today, Canadians aged 55-64 can apply. In the coming weeks, applications will open to Canadians aged 18-54.   Because of this plan, millions of people can now afford to see a dentist — some for the first time in decades. Soon, millions more will get that same care.

The polls are now closed.   For 37 days, in every corner of this country, our team worked to build a stronger Canada.   Thank you to everyone who put so much into this campaign.

Thank you to President Trump for inviting me to the White House.   Our meeting today marks the beginning of a new relationship between Canada and the United States — based on respect, built on common interests, and to the transformational benefit of both our nations.

I met with President @ZelenskyyUa at the G7 to share the next phase of Canada’s support for Ukraine: Canada will provide new military support — including drones, armoured vehicles, and equipment Ukraine needs to defend its sovereignty. We’re also disbursing a $2.3B loan to help Ukraine rebuild its infrastructure, and advancing a new sanctions package that targets Russia’s illicit shadow fleet and energy revenues. Canada’s support for Ukraine remains unwavering.

Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution — an independent, viable, and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security.   My statement on Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state:

I just spoke with Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer. We’re both determined to strengthen the trade, security, and economic relationship between Canada and the U.K. At this consequential time for our nation, partnerships with long-standing, reliable allies matter more than ever.

A new airlift of Canadian aid landed in Gaza today, with thanks to His Majesty King Abdullah II and our Jordanian partners. Canada is dedicating more than $340 million in aid to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza — and we will ensure it moves forward at the necessary scale.

I’ve arrived in Washington, D.C. ahead of meetings with President Trump tomorrow.   Canada and the United States are strongest when we work together — and that work starts now.

The consumer carbon tax is not working. It’s become too divisive — at a time when Canada needs to be united. As my government’s first order of business, I have cancelled it.

Canada condemns the Israeli government’s failure to prevent the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Israel’s control of aid distribution must be replaced by comprehensive provision of humanitarian assistance led by international organizations. Many of these are holding significant Canadian-funded aid which has been blocked from delivery to starving civilians. This denial of humanitarian aid is a violation of international law. Canada calls on all sides to negotiate an immediate ceasefire in good faith. We reiterate our calls for Hamas to immediately release all the hostages, and for the Israeli government to respect the territorial integrity of the West Bank and Gaza.   Canada supports a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians. Canada will work intensively in all fora to further that end, including through the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the UN High-Level Conference on a Two-State Solution in New York next week.

I spoke with Prime Minister Starmer, President Zelenskyy, and many of our closest allies this morning to discuss Ukraine’s path to peace. Canada supports the proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. Now, Russia must stop stalling and launching its attacks. It’s time for Russia to come to the table in good faith. As the G7 agreed at Charlevoix, we will tighten the monitoring of sanctions to encourage compliance. Canada is Ukraine’s steadfast ally. We will make sure Ukraine has the military support it needs to defend itself — now and into the future.

My joint statement with @Keir_Starmer and @EmmanuelMacron on the situation in Gaza and the West Bank: “We strongly oppose the expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. Yesterday’s announcement that Israel will allow a basic quantity of food into Gaza is wholly inadequate. We call on the Israeli Government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. This must include engaging with the UN to ensure a return to delivery of aid in line with humanitarian principles. We call on Hamas to release immediately the remaining hostages they have so cruelly held since 7 October 2023. The Israeli Government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law. We condemn the abhorrent language used recently by members of the Israeli Government, threatening that, in their despair at the destruction of Gaza, civilians will start to relocate. Permanent forced displacement is a breach of international humanitarian law.  Israel suffered a heinous attack on October 7. We have always supported Israel’s right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate. We will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions. If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response. We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank. Israel must halt settlements which are illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians.  We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions.  We strongly support the efforts led by the United States, Qatar and Egypt to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. It is a ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages and a long-term political solution that offer the best hope of ending the agony of the hostages and their families, alleviating the suffering of civilians in Gaza, ending Hamas’ control of Gaza and achieving a pathway to a two-state solution, consistent with the goals of the 18 June conference in New York co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. These negotiations need to succeed, and we must all work towards the implementation of a two-state solution, which is the only way to bring long-lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve and ensure long-term stability in the region. We will continue to work with the Palestinian Authority, regional partners, Israel and the United States to finalize consensus on arrangements for Gaza’s future, building on the Arab plan. We affirm the important role of the High-level Two-State Solution Conference at the UN in June in building international consensus around this aim. And we are committed to recognizing a Palestinian state as a contribution to achieving a two-state solution and are prepared to work with others to this end.”

At 12:01 EDT tonight, Canada’s counter-tariffs will come into force. There will be 25% tariffs on all non-CUSMA-compliant vehicles from the U.S., and 25% tariffs on the contents of CUSMA-compliant vehicles that are not from Canada or Mexico. President Trump caused this trade crisis — and Canada is responding with purpose and with force.

I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening. These tariffs are an unjustified, direct attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses. Canada should retaliate with dollar-for-dollar tariffs that will have maximum impact on the US and minimum impact on Canada. The proceeds from our tariffs should be used to protect our workers. The unpredictability of US trade policy underscores the imperative of Canada using every tool at our disposal to build the strongest economy in the G7. We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are united and determined. In trade, as in hockey, we will win.

President Trump seems to think he can suspend the laws of the United States, of international trade, and of economics. President Trump’s actions will hurt millions of Americans workers and all American consumers. And after promising to reduce inflation, his actions will send it and interest rates up. In Canada, we understand the laws of economics. That’s why we will be masters of our own house in building the strongest economy in the G7.

Early this morning, I spoke with @ZelenskyyUA and many of our closest allies as part of the Coalition of the Willing. We continue to support a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine without conditions or delays. A path to peace has been proposed. An end to this senseless and brutal war is possible. Now, Russia must come to the table in good faith. If Russia chooses to reject or delay the ceasefire, we’ll pursue further and stronger sanctions.
