The Luugat, located in the former Howard Johnson Hotel and currently used for supportive housing, will close by June 2026. The site has faced ongoing complaints from neighbouring businesses, including fires, violence, break-ins, open drug use, and street disorder.
💡“We are working to rebuild this important and historic part of our province’s entertainment, music, arts, and culture scene — a vital economic driver for our city. Our goal is to restore jobs and create a space where locals and visitors alike can feel safe and enjoy an outstanding experience,” said Laura Ballance, spokesperson for the Vancouver Hospitality Association.
Mayor Ken Sim said supportive housing does not belong in the Granville Entertainment District, calling the closure a step forward. “The Province has informed us that these facilities will be closed and that residents will not be relocated elsewhere in the GED. We will continue to hold them to their word.”
