To ensure the life and safety of all residents and the surrounding community, the decision has been made to bring the East Hastings encampment to a close today. Shelter space is available to those currently residing on Hastings St. As we move forward, we will continue to work with all levels of government to secure quality, permanent housing for our city's most vulnerable residents.

This is unacceptable. The suspect was already on probation and back on the street within hours. We’ve invested in more police officers, but that means nothing if violent offenders are released almost immediately after arrest. It’s time for senior levels of government to step up with meaningful bail reform to keep these repeat offenders off our streets. Vancouverites deserve to feel safe. That starts with concrete action from higher levels of government. vancouversun.com/news/axe-wi…

Today, Vancouver City Hall and Burrard Bridge will be illuminated for Israel's 76th Independence Day. We recognize and uphold fundamental freedoms of speech and the ability to peacefully protest whether at City Hall, or across Vancouver. That being said, it’s equally important to emphasize that our city maintains a zero-tolerance stance towards hateful speech and violent demonstrations. I'm incredibly disappointed to see Councillor Sean Orr participating at a Samidoun-affiliated rally in Vancouver. Samidoun is a terrorist organization. Anti-semitism has NO place in Vancouver. Celebrating Hamas has NO place in Vancouver. I call on all local elected officials to condemn this behaviour.
Vancouver City Councillor @seanorr spoke for 3 minutes today at a rally organized by terrorist entity Samidoun at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Orr repeated false allegations of genocide against Israel but failed to mention the Hamas genocide of Jews on October 7, 2023.

To those who spew this vile hatred, you are not welcome here. We will always stand up against all forms of hate and ensure Vancouver remains a city of diversity, inclusion, and respect.
On the streets of Vancouver more chants from a crowd of protestors yelling “long live October 7!” A chant led by a senior member of 🇨🇦 not-for-profit Samidoun — a group with connections to the terror organization PFLP and a group we’ve continually raised concerns over. Today, we're excited to announce that Vancouver has achieved its lowest violent crime rate in 23 years. That's due in no small part to the success of Task Force Barrage. The stats from the DTES speak for themselves: - 18% decline in violent crime. - 44% decline in robberies. - 23% decline in serious assaults. - 1,458 weapons seized. - 28% decline in fire response calls. - 30% decline in structure fires. This is what happens when you fully fund frontline services and direct resources toward the areas that need them the most. With today's announcements of permanent, dedicated VPD resources in the Downtown Eastside and the introduction of VanStat, we will carry the lessons of Barrage forward and keep building a safer, more liveable city. #vanpoli

There was a time in this country when people like me weren’t allowed to vote, much less hold office. Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of the implementation of the Chinese Exclusion Act — a racist piece of legislation that prevented those of Chinese descent from fully participating in Canadian society. Today, at the opening of the Chinese Canadian Museum, I had the opportunity to see the stories of those who came before me — those who came to this country to build a better life for themselves and their families. To see the accounts of their struggles and achievements be told in such an impactful way is incredibly meaningful. I look forward to seeing how this museum will illuminate those stories and showcase the countless contributions that Chinese Canadians have made to our city, province, and country. @ccmuseumbc

Zero means zero. Today, Vancouver City Council has voted for a zero percent property tax increase for the coming year. Across Canada, families and businesses are facing growing uncertainty with rising costs putting pressure on household budgets. Today's step ensures that the City of Vancouver is doing its part to ease the burden on residents and businesses by finding efficiencies and managing taxpayer dollars more responsibly. We’re maintaining vital investments in our City’s infrastructure, while giving families and local businesses the confidence they need heading into 2026. We are fundamentally changing the way we do things at City Hall and with this upcoming budget, we’ll show what’s possible when we stay focused. Last night's Park Board's decision let down Vancouverites. The elected Park Board made the irrational decision not to grow and expand park space in the West End. They also said no to safer streets by turning down a fully funded AAA bike lane and improved pedestrian crossings.🚲🚸 This is what happens when two different organizations are responsible for the same thing. The elected Park Board’s decision is a setback for Vancouverites, but it is only temporary. Another repeat offender, who should have been behind bars, was free to walk our streets. A 40-year-old man with multiple outstanding warrants was able to seriously injure two @VancouverPD officers on Thursday night.   This is exactly why we need the federal government to act. Meaningful bail reform is long overdue. Repeat offenders should not have the opportunity to harm others, especially those who serve and protect our communities. #Vancouver deserves better.
#VPDNews: Suspect arrested after VPD officers set on fire Two Vancouver Police officers are recovering after they were set on fire by a man on the Downtown Eastside. The officers were doing foot patrols on East Hastings and Carrall streets Thursday night, when they attempted to detain a man for jay-walking. The suspect, who was wanted BC-wide for 10 different offences, tried to run away, but the officers pursued him. As they were taking the suspect into custody, it’s believed the man used a flammable substance to set the officers’ uniforms on fire, then continued to flee. The officers, who were deployed as part of VPD’s Task Force Barrage, radioed for assistance and were able to put out the fires themselves. Additional VPD officers responded and the suspect was taken into custody a short distance away. One officer was treated by paramedics and is currently recovering at home. The second officer did not sustain physical injuries. The suspect, a 40-year-old Vancouver man, received treatment at hospital for burns and is currently in jail. VPD is recommending multiple new charges, including assaulting a police officer with a weapon, obstructing a police officer, and breaching a release order. More than 35 VPD officers have been assaulted on duty since the beginning of 2025 — a 25 per cent increase over the same period last year.

There is no place for this kind of behaviour in our city. Hateful and bigoted comments are never acceptable in Vancouver, or anywhere else. This is an important reminder of work that we must do to combat racism and homophobia in our city.

Today, I released an updated statement regarding the Province's recently announced Park Board referendum legislation. I will not support, nor bring forward, a referendum that would allow any park land to be transferred without the direct consent of Vancouver residents. Read my full statement below:

An important reminder: Littering is illegal. And throwing cigarette butts on the ground is littering. That means if your butt ends up on the ground, you could be subject to a minimum fine of $250 up to $10,000 under the Street and Traffic Bylaw No. 2849. Let's work together to keep our city litter free!
In just 3 weeks, the Downtown Van Clean Team collected over 75lbs of cigarette butts in the downtown core. They are the #1 most littered item in Vancouver, & approximately 1 mill are dropped on the street each day. Stop dropping your butts & use a garbage can or pocket ashtray!

Today, joined by Premier @Dave_Eby , @musqueam , and @SquamishNation , as the provincial government announced the introduction of mandatory care, marking a first step forward in addressing the mental health and addictions crisis. For too long, our most vulnerable have been falling through the cracks without readily accessible resources. This marks a new chapter for care and compassion in our province.  But this is just the beginning - more to come tomorrow.

We are taking bold action to address this housing crisis. Tonight we took a huge step forward to increase housing attainability and build more homes faster, by allowing multiplexes across all low density residential zones in the City of Vancouver.

Another excellent decision from our new Park Board. Vancouver residents have clearly demonstrated over the last two years that they can be trusted to consume alcohol responsibly — it’s great to see this initiative be made permanent with an expanded number of parks. #vanpoli
You’ll soon be allowed to enjoy an adult beverage in many of Vancouver’s parks any time of the year, after the park board approved a motion to expand the program. vancouver.citynews.ca/2022/1…
