STATEMENT FROM TIKTOK: In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.

Message being that you want to silence and censor over 170 million Americans' right to free speech
Trump talks a big game on China & wanted to ban TikTok—just like many Republicans voted to do. But now he’s inviting TikTok’s CEO to sit beside him at his inauguration even though TikTok is linked to the CCP & is a threat to our national security. What message does this send?
Community note
China itself does not permit the international version of TikTok to be used on the mainland. Instead, users must download Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok which is subject to censorship from the Chinese Communist Party. time.com/6971009/tiktok… nytimes.com/2024/04/25/bus

Statement on Possible Shutdown The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok's availability to over 170 million Americans. Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19.

Our Statement on Enactment of the TikTok Ban: This unconstitutional law is a TikTok ban, and we will challenge it in court. We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side, and we will ultimately prevail. The fact is, we have invested billions of dollars to keep U.S. data safe and our platform free from outside influence and manipulation. This ban would devastate seven million businesses and silence 170 million Americans. As we continue to challenge this unconstitutional ban, we will continue investing and innovating to ensure TikTok remains a space where Americans of all walks of life can safely come to share their experiences, find joy, and be inspired.

TikTok Statement on Court Decision: "The Supreme Court has an established historical record of protecting Americans' right to free speech, and we expect they will do just that on this important constitutional issue. Unfortunately, the TikTok ban was conceived and pushed through based upon inaccurate, flawed and hypothetical information, resulting in outright censorship of the American people. The TikTok ban, unless stopped, will silence the voices of over 170 million Americans here in the US and around the world on January 19th, 2025."

TikTok Files Emergency Motion for Injunction Today, we filed an emergency motion for an injunction to stop the TikTok Ban from taking effect on January 19, 2025 until our appeal of the decision by the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit is heard by the US Supreme Court. TikTok is, at its core, its 170 million American users. Estimates show that small businesses on TikTok would lose more than $1 billion in revenue and creators would suffer almost $300 million in lost earnings in just one month unless the TikTok Ban is halted. In 2023 alone, the advertising, marketing, and organic reach on TikTok contributed $24.2 billion, and TikTok’s own operations contributed an additional $8.5 billion to the U.S. GDP. Content promoting this letter clearly violates our rules on supporting any form of terrorism. We are proactively and aggressively removing this content and investigating how it got onto our platform. The number of videos on TikTok is small and reports of it trending on our platform are inaccurate. This is not unique to TikTok and has appeared across multiple platforms and the media.
Over the past 24 hours, thousands of TikToks (at least) have been posted where people share how they just read Bin Laden’s infamous "Letter to America," in which he explained why he attacked the United States. The TikToks are from people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Many of them say that reading the letter has opened their eyes, and they’ll never see geopolitical matters the same way again. Many of them — and I have watched a lot — say it has made them reevaluate their perspective on how what is often labeled as terrorism can be a legitimate form of resistance to a hostile power. This is not limited to TikTok; similar videos have been posted on other social media platforms. The Guardian had a copy of “Letter to America” posted, but once these TikToks went viral, the Guardian took it down, which has only led to more interest in the letter and conspiracies from TikTokers who say this is part of the media and the powers that control it trying to silence the truth.

The TikTok ban results in a massive and unprecedented censorship of over 170 million Americans on January 19, 2025. 🇺🇸X USERS LEAST LIKELY TO ADOPT ANTI-SEMITIC VIEWS A recent survey by Generation Lab involving 1,323 Americans under 30 across 47 states revealed a correlation between social media platform usage and views on anti-Semitic/anti-Israel sentiments. The study found: TikTok: Users who spend more than 30 minutes daily on TikTok show a +17% increased likelihood of holding anti-Semitic views compared to non-users. Instagram: There's a +6% increase in such views among users who engage with the platform for over 30 minutes daily. X: The increase in these views is minimal at +2% for daily users. Source: Semafor

Respectfully, @RepAuchincloss, there is no truth to any of what you said. Notwithstanding the attempt to set aside the free speech rights and livelihoods of Massachusetts creators, we are happy to work together next Congress on legislation to actually make the internet safer for users - no matter what platform they’re on.
TikTok is the most influential social media platform in America. It answers to the Chinese Communist Party – on data privacy, on content moderation, on its duty of care to underage users. The bill I co-led is simple: either TikTok follows U.S. law, or it stops doing business here.

This is not only patently false but grossly irresponsible "reporting". No, TikTok is not boosting a political candidate's content. Second, this is nothing more than a deliberate attempt to push a political objective through a bogus study with faulty research that is not based on any form of reality. Congressman, claiming that the owners of TikTok are buying "Trump Coins" is patently false and irresponsible and doesn’t even accurately reflect a letter you signed last month.
The law allows only one single extension, so Trump’s failure to enforce it is illegal. However, the Chinese owners of TikToK have announced they are buying “Trump Coins” for $300 million. Trump creates “Trump Coins” at no cost, meaning this is just a $300 million bribe that goes right into his pocket.

Does anyone remember the NyQuil Chicken Challenge? It only got attention after the media created a moral panic. As @broderick notes, the thread below and media attention drove people to engage with these hashtags. From 11/14 - 15 (before tweets and media coverage) the hashtag #lettertoamerica had 274 video posts and 1.85M total video views - moving to ~13M views after tweets/press stories. We've since removed the hashtag. More context and perspective: during a recent 24 hour period, these were video views of some high performing hashtags: #travel at 137,011,985, #skincare at 252,103,826, #film at 319,621,738, #Anime at 611,003,983, and #GymTok at 200,218,084. This is not a trend.
I spent some time looking into the claim that Bin Laden's "Letter to America" went viral on TikTok. And, after finding some of the videos in this supercut and lining it up with Know Your Meme's timeline, I'm pretty confident saying this tweet is actually what made it "go viral".

Today's article from @iamsternlicht is factually inaccurate. Facts matter. FACT: Our secure environment for protected U.S. user data was isolated in January 2023 and is overseen by USDS personnel. After that point, new protected U.S. user data was inaccessible to anyone outside of USDS, including ByteDance and TikTok globally. Limited exceptions exist for legal and compliance purposes. FACT: At least one employee cited in this article was only with the company for a brief period (about six months) - before Project Texas was implemented. FACT: All USDS employees are issued laptops that are managed, monitored, and controlled exclusively by USDS - not ByteDance or TikTok. FACT: Directly contrary to the piece, USDS personnel connect to the Oracle Cloud using a Palo Alto Networks VPN, not Seal. Everything cited in this article is based off of information prior to the set-up of USDS and relies on fabrications from individuals who had no access or insights into data privacy and security practices. The piece deliberately distorts timelines, omits basic facts, and relies on disgruntled former employees as its primary sourcing. If this reporter had done any research into what actually occurs at TikTok, she would know that the scenarios laid out are not only forbidden by policy, but are also subject to controls in place that prevent data sharing.

We believed you the first time, @DanCrenshawTX, it is a ban bill. "China" doesn't own TikTok or ByteDance, and TikTok is not even available in China. #FactsMatter
Lot’s of TikTok influencers are real mad about the bipartisan legislation we are gonna pass today. I get it, your favorite digital drug is under threat. So I’ll explain it really simply. First of all, if you didn’t think TikTok would engage in malicious behavior before today, you shouldn’t think so any longer: they are preventing users from using the platform unless you share your zip code (so they can tell you which member of Congress to call and repeat their lies.) Wow. Second, the parent company of TikTok is ByteDance in China. China is not like the US. China can make companies do whatever the government wants, to include handing over data and weaponizing social media platforms for potentially the most far-reaching psych warfare operation in history. Third, today’s legislation doesnt ban TikTok. It simply says it can’t be owned by a foreign adversary like China. Under this bill, TikTok could be bought by an American company and then, hey, maybe I’ll even open an account and make some viral dance videos.

Respectfully, @NikkiHaley, this is the truth: Content promoting this letter clearly violates our rules on supporting any form of terrorism. We are proactively and aggressively removing this content and investigating how it got onto our platform. The number of videos on TikTok is small and reports of it trending on our platform are inaccurate. This is not unique to TikTok and has appeared across multiple platforms and the media.
Thousands of TikTok users are siding with Osama bin Laden who murdered 3,000 Americans. This is a prime example of how our foreign enemies poison social media to advance their evil agenda. #BanTikTok. Stop giving the Chinese Communist Party the ability to influence Americans.

Respectfully, @SenTedCruz, the analysis from the NCRI cited in your questioning today has been debunked by researchers at @catoinstitute and elsewhere. The NCRI study fails to take into account the basic fact that hashtags are created by users, not by TikTok. Most importantly, anyone familiar with how the platform works can see for themselves the content they refer to is widely available and claims of suppression are baseless: cato.org/blog/lies-damned-li…

This bill is an outright ban of TikTok, no matter how much the authors try to disguise it. This legislation will trample the First Amendment rights of 170 million Americans and deprive 5 million small businesses of a platform they rely on to grow and create jobs.
"This is my message to TikTok: break up with the Chinese Communist Party or lose access to your American users. America’s foremost adversary has no business controlling a dominant media platform in the United States." - Rep. Gallagher

TikTok & other trillion-dollar social media corporations are making kids & their parents miserable, all for advertising dollars. Congress needs to regulate them. This week I introduced two bills: one to safeguard children online and one to force TikTok to answer to US laws.

Story from @NYT on our ongoing safety efforts during 2024 elections: "Most major social media companies have scaled back safeguards around misinformation and downsized teams working on elections. Mr. Mahadevan, whose MediaWise group promotes media literacy across social platforms, said that TikTok stands out for leaning into such efforts at this time." "TikTok said in a release that its Elections Center — a landing page that the app prompts users to visit when they search for election-related terms or watch videos tied to the race — has been visited more than seven million times since it was introduced in January. TikTok developed the page in conjunction with Democracy Works, a nonpartisan nonprofit that helps voters find accurate information online." Read the full story here: nytimes.com/2024/09/04/busin…

Senator @tedcruz, TikTok is not available in China and here in the U.S., as we've repeatedly explained, our algorithm doesn't "take sides" or "promote" one side of an issue over another: newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/th…
In China, TikTok is promoting educational videos to children, and there is even a limit to the amount of time they can spend on the app. In the US, TikTok is promoting harmful videos and anti-Israel propaganda. Why is there such a dramatic difference? foxbusiness.com/politics/tik…

To be clear, @JohnCornyn, the Wall Street Journal story you referenced gets it wrong. We have robust policies in place to protect US user data, far and above what any peer company has done. There are strict technical controls, policies, and training to prevent unauthorized sharing of protected data. We not only investigate allegations of misconduct, we take action against any employee who does not follow our rigorous policies. This is a massive, difficult undertaking and, regardless of what a few anonymous sources have said, the vast majority of our 2,000 employees working on Project Texas are proud of the progress we are making. We'd be happy to meet with you or your staff to discuss these matters directly.
