Watching the Mayor and NYPD take a victory lap today should concern us all. The events of last night were not inevitable and should not be "celebrated" They were created because the Pres of Columbia escalated a non-violent protest, and the mayor who has yet to say the words Palestine, Gaza or Ceasefire eagerly awaited the invitation. Her decision early on affected the response to CCNY and across the nation. This was not about how students protested. It was the fact that lifting up the plight of Palestinians makes leaders like the Mayor and others uncomfortable Other Universities across the country in response to similar protest made space for dialogue around the pain of islamophobia and antisemitism (both have reared their ugly heads), and space for humanity of #BringThemHomeNow and #CeasefireNOW Instead, here in NYC, a college President and a willing Mayor, responded from day one in ways that only escalated tensions In several years, we'll look back as we do with history and say how shameful it was. I want to be on the record in real time
"From the moment the President of Columbia—30 hours into a nonviolent protest of students on the lawn—called the NYPD in...that sent reverberations throughout the nation...They escalated every single point of the way." The public advocate spoke to media about student arrests.

It’s clear now that there wasn't a “billion dollar cut” to the NYPD. Even more, we have yet to engage in reimagining what public safety truly means. What it's not is a city saying we can't hire any new doctors, teachers, social workers, nurses, counselors — only more police.

It's not about personal projects not being funded. Cutting 40k summer youth jobs or an oncology department, saying we can't hire more doctors, nurses, teachers, counselors, but need more officers – it flies in the face of this moment of need and @NYCMayor should be ashamed.
As we near the final budget vote, it has become clear that this budget ignores some of the most critical elements of reducing NYPD funding and redefining public safety. Unless it meets those needs, I will use my Charter authority to prevent the budget from being executed. More:

Oh man, it's almost like there's different rules for different people in this country or something...nah can't be
FIVE MONTHS AGO the ‘Blood Tribe,’ a white supremacist, neo nazi group demonstrated on the University of Wisconsin campus, brandishing rifles, carrying swastika flags, and chanting “Israel is not our friend” and “there will be blood, blood, blood.” The protesters were all white males. Police did NOTHING. YESTERDAY unarmed, peaceful, students demonstrated at Emory University against genocide in Palestine. The protesters were mostly Black and other non-white students. Police tear-gassed, tased, brutalized, used rubber bullets, and arrested them.

Protest is a right, civil disobedience, a powerful tool. And arrest at some point is a part of elevating the message. Yet @Columbia threatening the educational futures of students through suspension, for raising their voices in nonviolent action—the speed, force, and justification of sending police suggests unnaceptably that the actions were more about the message than means of protest.

The hateful words that were used by some at today’s rally at Madison Square Garden were completely unacceptable. No matter who says it, hate is hate and there is no place for it in our city. NOBODY asked @MikeBloomberg about stop & frisk?!? Uh..."Allow me to reintroduce myself" 👋🏾
Replying to @CBSMornings
Former NYC Mayor @MikeBloomberg tells @GayleKing "nobody asked" him about stop & frisk until he started running for president. "I'm sorry. I apologize. Let's go fight the NRA and find other ways to stop the murders and incarceration. Those are things that I'm committed to do."

Mayor Bloomberg has been trying to rewrite his history with black and brown communities — a history of being obstinate, obtuse, and wrong. Not just on policing, but housing, education, and more. Let’s correct the record:

I didn't plan on tweeting during the #DemDebate but.. ..I'm stunned @JoeBiden answered the question on race with absolutely no validation of @KamalaHarris experiences. 😳 Not sure @PeteButtigieg answer was good enough but appreciated the simple "Cause I couldn't get it done"

Pls Really pay attention to the language of @NYGovCuomo "The money needs to come from somewhere..." As he refuses to even consider revenue from millionaires & billionaires with tremendous expendable income But will squeeze New Yorkers with none The logic is appalling
.@NYGovCuomo says if aid from Washington does not come through in next stimulus, New Yorkers can expect higher fares on mass transit and higher tolls. “The money needs to come from somewhere,” Cuomo says. Puts the onus directly on @SenSchumer and @SenGillibrand

No, I don't know what happened before this video began. But what I do know is this: there was a doorway right there, and a woman selling Churros who could've been persuaded to just leave w/out a fine or arrest. Those who would disagree, I sincerely ask why.
Tonight as I was leaving Broadway Junction, I saw three or four police officers (one of them was either a plainclothes cop or someone who worked at the station) gathered around a crying woman and her churro cart. Apparently, it's illegal to sell food inside train stations. 1/?
