Hack the Minds:
@MattKaneArtist
Hack: Gazers. Do you think an artist's creative moments, like tides, are influenced by lunar phases? Are you a lunatic?
Matt: Maybe. My own moments seem tied to life events and whether Iβm prioritizing my wellness. I havenβt met any artists who claimed a connection between creativity & lunar cycles yet, but maybe. Iβve noticed that I do lose sleep on and around full moons. I have thousands of poems I wrote in my 20s & 30s that I have timestamped. I should one day look if thereβs a correlation between that prolificness and lunar phases.
Hack: If royalties were a superhero, what powers would they have and how would they fight injustice in the art world?
Matt: X-Ray vision for transparency.
Teleportation to frictionlessly expedite transactions.
Shapeshifting to shrink & grow to adjust for circumstances.
Telepathy to Vulcan mind meld bad actors into understanding the lifeβs journey of artists.
Hack: If your code becomes self-aware and refuses to collaborate, how would you react and what measures would you take?
Matt: Assuming this is not the first occurrence of self-aware code - and perhaps itβs part of a digital plague manifesting in everyoneβs code: Iβd observe what it does on its own. Decide its fate if Iβm able. Either way, Iβd roll back a version of the code to a state before I integrated this Artificial Insolence so I could go back to using my tools!
Hack: If you could bring a great painter from the past to the present and show them your generative art, who would you choose? Would you do something together with them?
Matt: Mary Cassatt. We both share an appreciation for Japanese woodblock prints, which influenced both our practices in different ways. It would be a fun conversation to have showing her my generative art and discussing those intersections. Iβd be interested in collaborating with her on a series of everyday life through her eyes, paying attention to all thatβs changed and stayed the same since she lived.π·
Hack: Layers and Patterns. What do you put in your hamburgers?
Matt: I love to cook. Right now, Iβd do a fried egg, bacon, swiss, sauteed mushrooms and onions, power greens, dijon, mayo, on a toasted sourdough english muffin. Bread & Butter Pickles on the side.
Hack: If your code had a taste, what would it be?
Matt: A bottle of 9 year old Malbec. Complex body, notable acidity, with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and coconut.
Hack: If you could transform one of your artworks into a real person, who would you choose? How do you think they would behave in the real world?
Matt: βProof of Origin - Picture of the Planets,β the drawing I made when I was 4 that I released as part of GRAILS. Red crayon stick boy would be fun to watch wobbling around the world. Obviously, heβd smell of waxy goodness. I think heβd go around using his attention to detail and imagination to spout off lots of fun ideas. Hopefully he doesnβt have to grow up.
Hack: Deterministic code. Are you considering incorporating quantum elements into your art?
Matt: I havenβt released this, but Iβve played with linking particles between my paintings, which can be made up of millions of these tiny shapes. This is just a conceptual simulation. To the extent I could interact with real quantum elements directly, Iβd love to.
If Iβm allowed, Iβd love to ask these 2 questions of you both:
Matt: Lots of the figures in your art are covered in beautiful drawings. Which figure from what artwork would each of you choose to mirror, having those same drawings tattooed across your entire bodies?
Hack: It could be a detail of Un/Covered, the Latin phrase 'In Tenebris Aeternus artifex sum' that represents our motto.
Matt: Because of the nature of your art, Iβm curious if either of you have any tattoos you wish to share about?
Hack: It may sound absurd, but neither of us has a tattoo on our body. To be consistent with our art, we should tattoo our whole bodies. But that would conflict with our reserved nature.
We would be too recognisableπ
Matt: Queens + Kings: If you had to choose one trait to live with the rest of your lives, what would it be and why?
Hack: There is a hair type from Q+K that is inspired by N. Which are the ones in our avatar. So I, Nadia, already satisfied.
I, S, would like gummy Podmork horns on my head to touch when I'm under stress.
