Marie Curie and Einstein Beyond the Headlines
and how this relates to Elon
In this picture from 1929, two scientific giants, Albert Einstein and Marie Sklodowska Curie, are shown reminiscing by a tranquil lake. This wasn't the first time their ways crossed: Formally, they met during the 1911 and 1927 Solvay Conferences in Brussels, but it's the informal part that's more interesting.
In 1906, Curie's husband, Pierre, tragically died in a Parisian carriage accident. Seeking solace, Curie found companionship in Pierre's protégé, Paul Langevin, a physics professor struggling in a troubled marriage.
Their relationship exploded into scandal when Langevin's estranged wife orchestrated a break-in at Curie's apartment, stealing their love letters and feeding them to the hungry press. The press loved this which tarnished Curie's reputation and led to public outcry and even threats. Forced into hiding, she found refuge with a friend. Langevin challenged one of the tabloid editors to a duel - which took place but turned symbolic with no shots fired.
Einstein, outraged by the public's treatment of Curie, wrote a powerful letter of support. He lauded her intellect, her unwavering honesty, and her remarkable scientific contributions. He encouraged her to rise above the sensationalism and continue her path of brilliance.
Before the public storm of 1911, Marie Curie had already carved her name in scientific history. Just eight years prior, in 1903, she shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband, Pierre Curie, and Henri Becquerel for their groundbreaking research on radioactivity. This achievement marked her as the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, and cemented her status as a leading pioneer in the field.
And amidst the tumult, Curie's spirit shone through. In 1911, at the height of the scandal, she received her second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her groundbreaking work on radium and polonium. This was a testament to her unwavering commitment to science and her refusal to be defined by the storm surrounding her.
Though the scandal cast a long shadow, it could not dim Curie's brilliance. She remains an inspiration to scientists and women everywhere, a testament to the fact that even in the face of adversity, human spirit and scientific advancement can prevail.
PS... ELON
I find several analogies here to , besides the obvious brilliance.
• Then as now, sensationalist press was all too happy to smear famous bright people who immensely contributed to our world.
•Like Curie, Elon pushes through with his work. The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.
•And like Einstein, few but precious other people sometimes come to Elon's help. They recognize the immense value of his work and encourage him to persevere through the noise.
• And we come full circle as 117 years after Pierre Curie's death the problem that took his life still persists and Elon is trying to solve it
Without Curie, Einstein and Elon, our world would have been way behind our time. Their brilliance and unwavering perseverance has helped our lives, and I myself not only admire them, but also thank them and feel in their debt.🙏👏🫡😎
