Why LLMs are a dead end for human-level intelligence, and especially for Physical AI / Robotics. The next leap isn’t bigger language models. It’s World Models. I just dropped a full 1-hour presentation from Shanghai: “World Models: the ChatGPT moment for robotics?” → Why LLMs hit a wall → Why action-conditioned world models planning in latent space are the real path → Live World Forge demo with LeWorldModel + Hugging Face LeRobot Watch here. The future of intelligence is embodied, not just chatty.

This is my message to Starknet community. Let me state it very explicitly: I want to present my deepest apologies to users who were insulted by words I have badly chosen, in a specific context. I will give you some background about the story, once, and then I will not comment on this topic anymore. Was it a mistake to use the word "e-beggar" ? Yes, it was. Initially I found it was funny in the context it was used for the first time. But I realised it created some confusion and people felt targeted by it and insulted. I was driven by emotions and I did not think about the consequences of my words. For context, everything started with the sad news of Uri stepping down as the CEO of StarkWare, in a context that is very difficult, and which saddens me and many people a lot. I lost control when I saw some inhuman comments as reactions to this news, and I reacted in a very emotional way. people felt that I was targeting the general community, which was never the case. I want to clarify that I never targeted the general community, it was always used in the context of specific individuals, who I felt were abusing and disrespecting people I deeply care about. I know it's not an excuse, but I want to be honest and transparent about it. To anyone who felt targeted by my words, I want to say that I am sorry. I joined the crypto space for the promise of a better world, where people would be free to express themselves and be respected for who they are. The philosophical aspect of blockchains is much more important to me than the tech itself, the tech is only a mean to an end. So after all it's all about people. We are building all this for people, and I absolutely acknowledge that users are extremely important, and I would never dismiss them. Words we choose are important, and I will be more careful in the future. Now that I made this clear, let's move on! Back to building. Starknet needs builders and users alike, and it's being built for them!

Dear non Starknet users (8,104,225,549 - 8 Starknet users = 8104225541), I have few words for you, and I am begging you to listen (yeah I am the e-beggar now). I want to give briefly my PERSONAL opinion / sentiment with respect to some FUD around Starknet, mainly on 2 topics: - negativity / hate towards the first round of Provisions - lack of activity on the network / 8 users Simple questions and simple answers. Did we do some mistakes in the past ? Probably yes. If there is a vast sentiment like this, it must come from something. I personally did a big mistake in using the word e-beggar as reply to some individuals (i already apologised publicly for this but there is no ego here so I gladly double apologise again). Starknet is bigger than me, Starknet is bigger than all of us. Yet Starknet is nothing without you all, this is a reality. Did we do our best ? Yes, definitely. We tried hard. All people involved in every single step took it very seriously and really did the maximum. Could we have done better ? Retrospectively it's easy to say yes, but I would say that probably we could have done better. It's always the case as nothing is perfect from the get go. Do we care about this ? Yes, absolutely. Lessons are learned all along the way. We try things, and it comes with some risks. We try, we learn, we improve, repeat. What do next ? I think it's time to forget about the past for those who are not happy, you may have good reasons to not be happy. And I am sincerely sorry about it, as of course I would dream of a world where everyone could have gotten something good for them. This world does not exist unfortunately. Time for all of us together to move forward. As communicated by the Starknet Foundation, the Provisions that happened was only the first, this means there will be others, and it was stated a while ago. What can bring activity back to Starknet ? Beside constantly improving the protocol that we will of course always do, there are many things. First, we shifted from investing heavily into only infrastructure to be ready now to double down on applications. Yes, applications are everything. We need apps, we have already some strong apps, but we need more. We need more innovative use cases, we need more cool and funny things (many games are already there and many more are coming, including extremely ambitious and high quality games). We need people to have fun on the network. We need to have killer apps, consumer applications bringing real organic traffic and activity. We need more RWAs. And you know what ? We are doing many things to bring exactly ALL of that. Starknet will be strong in many verticals: DeFi, Gaming, RWA, ZKML,... I can tell you this will full confidence, and this is because of the sovereignty we have and the future proof technical choices (hard ones) we made. It took time to get there, but now that we have those solid foundations we will be in a good shape to reach escape velocity. The past years of hard working and innovations were just a warmup. Now that the infrastructure is a good shape (TPS, very low fees, native AA with Paymaster and many killer UX features, security) it's time to double down on Apps. So, if you are a team / a single dev, working on any ecosystem, on any app, reach out to us. We will support you and guide you on how to make your dream App on Starknet. We have a strong community, a very welcoming one. It's easy to get help and support. It's easy to create synergies between projects. Starknet has a soul, it really has, and this will make a difference. I am more confident than ever about the future of Starknet, and I want YOU to realise it's potential and to be part of this wonderful adventure. Join us and become the ninth user. #Only8Users #Ebeggar

Yosh! Happy to announce that I will be taking a new role as Head of Ecosystem at @StarkWareLtd. I will be still leading the great Exploration team and we are increasing it's size to build moarrrr crazy projects. It's a big new responsibility and taking it after @GuthL is both a privilege and a huge pressure, he did such an impressive job bootstrapping with maestria this beautiful Starknet ecosystem. @GuthL is not going anywhere and is shifting to a new exciting role (sorry to front run a potential announcement bro 😜). I will do my best to follow the traces of Louis and help scale by 100x Starknet ecosystem, while keeping it's great and unique culture. I am assembling a new team of Avengers for this Ecosystem 2.0 team. If you're up to the challenge reach out to me. Let's scale @Starknet ecosystem and be unaligned 🧭📉 together! #BuiltDifferent

Is Starknet putting a strong emphasis on devs? Yes. Does it mean we don't care about users? Hell no, quite the opposite actually. Let's unpack this. Starknet's approach as a dev-first network has been met with criticism, often seen as ignoring users and the wider community. But this perspective misses the bigger picture of what Starknet is striving to achieve. Building a protocol from scratch, especially one that's not EVM compatible, is no small feat. It demands a solid foundation of talented, creative developers who are committed to building valuable applications for users. This approach is not about sidelining users but rather ensuring that once they engage with the network, they have access to high-quality, robust applications. It's about doing things in the right order – infrastructure first, followed by user-centric development. Consider the alternative: networks that prioritize short-term user engagement often fall into the trap of offering half-baked solutions, leading to a poor user experience. Starknet's focus on developers is a strategic choice for long-term value creation. We're playing the long game here. Building a strong developer community is the first step in creating a sustainable ecosystem where users can thrive. It's not a sprint but a marathon, aiming for lasting impact and genuine value. By empowering developers, Starknet is setting the stage for innovative, user-centric applications that are not just functional but transformative. This is how we show our care for users – by laying a solid groundwork for their future experiences. In contrast, projects that claim to prioritize users but fail to support the development of a strong protocol foundation are often selling empty promises. They may capture immediate attention but lack the substance for enduring success. Starknet's strategy is clear: invest in developers from the inception to build a network that truly serves its users tomorrow. This isn't about ignoring the community; it's about preparing a fertile ground for it to flourish. So, while it may seem that Starknet has adopted a dev-centric, it was a calculated move. It's about building a resilient, capable network that will not just attract users but will genuinely serve their needs in the long run. In conclusion, Starknet's dev-first approach is not just beneficial; it's essential *for users*. It's a commitment to quality and sustainability, ensuring that when users come, they arrive at a network rich in possibilities and primed for their success. Starknet's roadmap includes phases that are more user-centric, as outlined by the foundation. A strategic shift towards such a phase will be launched soon with initiatives that benefit users. Moreover, involvement in the Starknet ecosystem isn't limited to developers. There are numerous ways for non-developers to engage and contribute, whether through governance, feedback, or community support. This inclusive approach invites a diverse range of perspectives, enriching the ecosystem. TL;DR: We care about users. We love our users, we build this for you!

Today marks an exhilarating milestone for Starknet as we continue to decentralize the network and protocol. Starknet is the network of trailblazers, the network of pioneers, the network of builders, the network of dreamers. It’s about building for users, the best product, the best experience. That’s what trailblazers, pioneers, builders, and dreamers are all about. Trailblazing means taking risks, it means going where no one has gone before, it means being the first to do something. Being the first, being the trailblazer, being the pioneer isn’t easy. Being the first can lead to mistakes. But it’s worth it! When we say Build Different, we mean it. Starknet is built different because we want it to be LIMITLESS! Our mission is simple: Scale Ethereum and bring it to the masses! 6 years ago, a paper called: “Scalable, transparent, and post-quantum secure computational integrity”, was published. It had a vision of a world where everyone can access integrity through math. This paper was the genesis of what would become Starknet, years later. And though six years feels like a lifetime ago, it’s merely a blink compared to the lasting impact we will have on blockchain and beyond. We build Starknet for the decades to come, for the generations to come. Today the Wolf is out, and the Wolf Pack is ready. I am changing my PFP for the occasion, and I am ready to howl with my fellow wolves. Howl with me my wolves: Awoooooooooooo 🐺 🔊

I am sometimes sad to work in an industry that rewards unethical players and stimulates dishonest behaviors. I am glad to work on a protocol where we don't fall into the trap of short-term thinking, and are not willing to compromise our values, even at the cost of moving slower, by not taking shortcuts that would boost some metrics like TVL, usage etc. This again reminds me of the importance of building a strong social layer, to protect core principles. I miss the early days of Ethereum, when the goals were clear for the vast majority of people involved. Ethereum is not too big to fail; it can still fail, and it will if we don't protect it strongly enough, if we consider the fight is over. It's not; the road is still very long and hard. StarkWare is not perfect as a company, Starknet is not perfect as a protocol, but I am extremely proud of how collectively we contribute to protecting those core principles, how we are patient and focused on the goals, ignoring the noise. I am sure that if you zoom out and look at a bigger timeframe, it will be clear to everyone who did what and why. I know that other genuine and very serious L2s are also suffering from this and are impacted by others who are using unethical techniques. To you, I am glad to be in the same boat as you, in our mission to scale Ethereum. We won't stop until we succeed!

PulseChain is an absolute garbage that never made sense and will never. Don't dare to compare your shit to something backed by immense breakthroughs in the fields of mathematics and computation. You are really dangerous and you are dragging so many ignorant folks into a hell of lies and bullshit. No one with 2 brain cells take your seriously. Everyone serious in the space knows that PulseChain is an absolute trash and that you are a charlatan. You can send me your army of retards, does not matter, those people are lost already unfortunately.
PulseChain is so vastly superior to Ethereum L2's its insane. But people are too stupid to listen lol. Look at Starknet, down for hours, dropping transactions. "had a down." Pitiful. Yo brother @VitalikButerin, we did it. Starknet v0.13.3 is live on mainnet with 5x cheaper blob gas! How ? New state diff compression + enhanced block squashing + optimised data formatting. And the good news is that it's only getting started, further improvements and fees reduction are coming down the line. Cairo Native will soon give us 3-4x speed improvement. In short, Starknet just keep getting Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. Starknet is the fastest L2. Starknet is the cheapest L2. Starknet is secured by the most battle tested proving infrastructure in the world (that has secured nearly 2 TRILLIONS dollars of cumulative volume). And this is before cairo native, STWO (100x proving speed incoming) and many more things. Starknet has a vibrant ecosystem of passionate builders. Starknet is the home of trailblazers. The world start to realise it. Say it and keep say it again: Starknet! Just say it brother: Starknet brother! Starknet is going to melt faces.
One part of L2 scaling is Ethereum increasing its blob capacity. The other part is rollups becoming more data-efficient. Good to see @Starknet rising to the challenge. Would love to see more EVM rollups increasing data efficiency too (see vitalik.eth.limo/general/202… )

Since yesterday, I keep oscillating between losing my nerves and ignoring those disgusting people. I try my best to not read those comments, to ignore, to not reply, but sometimes it's just too hard. How on earth can people completely sell their soul like this and lose their humanity. Luckily I am surrounded by very kind and mindful individuals, both at @StarkWareLtd but also among our "competitors". It was overwhelming to see the support to Uri from all of you guys, folks from Scroll, Polygon, Arbitrum and many other brillant minds of the industry. It helps me to keep the strength to continue, for the great mission we all have, for this important fight, that is way bigger and more important than this noise. Thank you @toghrulmaharram and all vaillant builders looking to change the world. We will do it, together 🫶
These are the replies left to @abdelstark's heartfelt message to @ukolodny. I genuinely sometimes question why I work in this industry. If by "community", some people mean a bunch of freeloaders expecting handouts, then fuck this, I don't want to be part of these "communities".

#StarknetOnBitcoin 🐺 - 🐱 We are excited to announce our StarkWare vision / proposal: @Starknet expanding to #Bitcoin! More than 10 years ago, sir @EliBenSasson gave a talk during the Bitcoin 2013 conference in San Jose, in which he was already advocating for the use of ZK technology for Bitcoin related use cases. Today, after more than a decade of innovation and progress related to computational integrity, we are finally at the point where we can start to see the concrete potential of STARKs for Bitcoin use cases. Those use cases can fit under the following dimensions: - Privacy: enable private transactions and computation on Bitcoin. - Expressivity: bring general purpose computation to Bitcoin. - Scalability: enable Bitcoin use cases to scale and be ready for mass adoption. Eli was such a visionary, foreseeing how zero knowledge proofs could be beneficial for Bitcoin. This vision never left his mind, and this is almost like it was an evitable destiny to see one day the crossover between STARKs and Bitcoin. As Satoshi Nakamoto presented it: "I’ve developed a new open source P2P e-cash system called Bitcoin. It’s completely decentralized, with no central server or trusted parties, because everything is based on crypto proof instead of trust". Bitcoin is about relying on cryptography and math rather than trust. Validity proofs are the natural continuation of this vision, as they allow for the verification of a computation without having to re-execute it. There is a certain beauty in the asymmetric nature of STARK proofs when you think about it. The fact that a small device can verify computation performed by gigantic machines without ever having to trust them is fascinating. To me this is the perfect incarnation of the cypherpunk spirit and it fits well with the idea of shaking up the world and centralised entities that have the possibility to abuse their power at the cost of individuals. Now there is a question: Is Bitcoin ready to take the next step? Well, stars are aligning, with the increasing likelihood of OP_CAT happening in a foreseeable future, it is now time to explore seriously this path. The backbone of this work is the implementation of a Circle STARK verifier in Bitcoin script. You can follow the progress on this work here: github.com/Bitcoin-Wildlife-… For general updates, follow @BitcoinWildlife. Few important elements: - We firmly believe in Ethereum and are committed to it's long term success, this expansion does not change that. In fact, on the contrary, we believe that this will be a good thing for Ethereum. - There are still a lot of technical challenges to overcome, but we are more confident than ever that we can design a solution for Starknet to settle both on Bitcoin and Ethereum. - We are assuming OP_CAT for this design. - We are collaborating with many amazing people on this initiative. - This is a proposal, that will be discussed with the community, the Starknet Foundation, and everyone involved in the Starknet ecosystem. I am personally extremely excited about this, as it unites my love for Bitcoin and Ethereum within a single tech. I believe that together, they strengthen the resistance against attacks from nation-states. To shut down or destroy both would require navigating very different attack strategies and targeting distinct communities. The Bitcoin renaissance is here, let's get this bread! Starknet will be the unification layer for Bitcoin and Ethereum, and I am very excited to see the future of this. #StarknetOnBitcoin #StarknetUnifyingBitcoinAndEthereum #BitcoinRenaissance
Bitcoin's biggest challenge is scalability. StarkWare has a vision to change that. The concept of STARK scaling for blockchains was first introduced by @EliBenSasson at a Bitcoin conference in early 2013. It's now time to scale Bitcoin with ZK-STARK, making it more accessible to everyone. The overarching goal: to transform @Starknet to be a self-custodial decentralized L2 with full functionality over both Ethereum and Bitcoin. Hear more about the vision: starkware.co/scaling-bitcoin…

👏 This is cool and showing you are acting in good faith. Hats off for this. Let's move on. ZK for all.
The Matter Labs ZK Pledge We are grateful to @VitalikButerin, @ilblackdragon, @hasufl, @MicahZoltu, @stonecoldpat0, @StaniKulechov, @lex_node, @hosseeb, @pcaversaccio, and others for their comments and suggestions on how to ensure critical terms like “ZK” remain freely available to everyone and protected against squatters. Here is a community proposal we fully support: 1. Setting up an ownerless legal entity with the sole purpose of holding trademarks for “ZK” and similar, critical names. This effort must be led by a trusted, credibly neutral organization or community members. 2. The entity grants free licenses of the trademarks to everyone. 3. Many prominent community figures and credibly neutral organizations are invited to join as guarantors. The Matter Labs Pledge: 1. Matter Labs will not file any new trademark applications for ZK. Matter Labs will not appeal any applications if they are rejected. Matter Labs will never enforce any of the ZK trademarks it owns now or in the future except for defensive purposes (i.e. preventing others from suing us). 2. We commit to financially support the creation of a community-led, TM-holder entity. 3. Matter Labs will immediately transfer to this entity all the filed ZK trademarks. We are asking for your help to create this new model and to put together the most effective structure for all. Everyone in the Ethereum and ZK communities is invited to join and contribute to this effort. You can reach us at zk-for-all@matterlabs.dev

Starknet STAGE 1 ✅ Very important milestone reached. Security should always be the top priority. Now, let's move on to the next stage. In the meantime, Starknet is the fastest and cheapest Ethereum rollup. And it's the ZK rollup with the most activity, active users (and real ones!) and TVL. (And with the most secure and battle-tested proving system in the world! > 4 years in prod, +$1 trillion in cumulative volume secured, > 1B transactions processed). Starknet will also scale Bitcoin and contribute humbly to hyperbitcoinization of the world. STARKs are an amazing technology that can really make a difference in the world, especially for Freedom Tech. Starknet is built from first principles, and the results are becoming more and more evident. Starknet is unique. Starknet will melt faces. Work not finished, game on. We are just getting started. Bit shout to @l2beat for the amazing work they do to track the ecosystem and provide transparency. We need them to keep all L2s accountable publicly. They are doing a very professional, rigorous and security laser focused work. Especially in the case of Starknet that is not EVM compatible and have many differences with others.

What an incredible day. Full of emotions and stress. So far the infrastructure has been holding up nicely. No downtime for the moment. More than 100k users have claimed their tokens. It's only the beginning but I am proud of what we accomplished so far today. Go Starknet go 🐺🔊
Today marks an exhilarating milestone for Starknet as we continue to decentralize the network and protocol.

ZK is a public good that should belong to everyone. @zksync this is really not a Cypherpunk move here. Honestly I don't get it all all. This is completely against the ethos of blockchain. Let's not reproduce the same mistakes as the system we are fighting against. Let's do better together and elevate our practises, instead of playing games of the web2 industry. I am especially disappointed because I personally used the ZK is the endgame motto, believing you were in good faith fighting for ZK as a tech rather than for your own purposes. But with this trademark move it feels it was a planned marketing move and I really don't like it. It's not too late to fix this. Let's act according to the ZK Credo you are proud of (and rightfully so). @zkLumi @anthonykrose @gluk64 I hope you will listen to this call and prove (pun intended) you are acting in good faith.
ZK is a public good that should belong to everyone. Matter Labs, the corporate entity behind @zksync, has filed trademark applications in nine countries, claiming ZK as its exclusive intellectual property, even though they neither created nor contributed to the creation of this technology. By using the legal system to claim a public good for itself, Matter Labs contradicts the ethos of crypto, Ethereum, and its own principles, which state: "We can make this world better by increasing people's freedom." StarkWare, alongside other leading ZK companies and researchers, urges the community to demand that Matter Labs withdraw all their trademark attempts.

it's incredible that some people think that. We do care a lot of users. It's mainly about doing things in order. We build a protocol from scratch, not EVM compatible. It requires a huge bootstrapping of a strong community of builders to build protocols and apps on the network that will be valuable for users. It's because we care about users that we focused a lot on devs in the past, not the opposite. We are not doing like bullshit projects claiming they care about users but actually they do nothing for their protocol to have valuables apps. It's not a spring, it's a marathon. Once you understand those things you will finally see who cares about it's users and who is just there to sell empty promises.

🤣🤣🤣 What a shitty take. We fear no one bro. We would never adjust any part of our roadmap based on what competitors do or can do. It's funny how you can assume this. If there is one entity that does not play this kind of games in this industry, it's certainly @StarkWareLtd. It's one of the reason why I chose to work here, on Starknet. I can proudly say it, and I dare anyone to prove me I am wrong on this. There are many things we can improve as a company for sure, but I can tell you that in terms of integrity and intellectual honesty StarkWare is clearly one of the best company in the whole industry. in fact, it's sometimes what can impact us negatively in terms of pure growth or business development, because contrary to many entities in this industry, we are not willing to adopt certain techniques.
Just my take.If you don’t agree ignore it. $STRK is afraid of zkSync. If they drop, they knows users are definitely going to flock to zkSync. That’s the reason why they changed the whole tokennomics. Now they will focus more on multiple drops rather than planned single drop

BTCFi on Starknet starts NOW. Today marks the beginning of the epic come back of Starknet. The ambition of BTCFi is to make Starknet: a) the most sustainable source of yield for Bitcoin b) the most cost-effective place to borrow against it This is done through: - Bitcoin staking within Starknet protocol - Institutional onboarding with Re7 - New massive partners and infra unlock (for example LayerZero) - BTCFi Incentive Program The path is clear: BTCFi → BitVM → Native ZK Rollup → Hyperbitcoinization Which means: Apps & Liquidity → Trust minimization → Trustless For me personally, what matters is Bitcoin as unstoppable p2p cash. I genuinely believe ZK is one of the best paths to improve Bitcoin as money. The proving tech we're building is the most battle-tested, the most efficient, the purest. The endgame vision has never been clearer. It will take time to get there, but the path exists and is credible. In the meantime, while continuing to articulate this vision and building the rails of Starknet as trustless ZK rollup on Bitcoin, we make today a strong acceleration on the application and liquidity sides. Some people want more from their Bitcoin. They want to use it in various financial applications. They don't want to sell or spend their Bitcoin (Gresham's law) but they've got bills to pay. They prefer to borrow against it. Or generate yield on it. BTCFi on Starknet is for them. From the lab to the streets. No moonmath celebration today. The Ferrari's engine has been built. Time to take it out of the garage and open it up on the highway. Starknet will melt faces. Starting now 🧡
1/ Bitcoin doesn’t change. But what you can do with it just did. From the June 2024 announcement that Starknet would scale Bitcoin, to the product rollouts of March 2025, the path has been clear. BTCFi on Starknet is where that momentum now leads 🧵

Starknet has the best tech. It's the only one that is decades long future proof when it comes to scaling. Starknet is built from first principles, and it's starting to be visible to the world. Suddenly, all technical choices, even the hardest ones that seemed silly back in the day, are now obvious and become standard in the industry. Being trailblazers is not easy, but if you look on a long enough time horizon, everything becomes clear. Conviction beats every single narrative and hype. Believe in something.

Yes! We can generate a STARK proof of the execution of the First ever transaction from Satoshi to Hal Finney. We can now prove the execution of a Bitcoin script program, using Shinigami. In less than 2 months, we implemented the Bitcoin Script VM in Cairo. Another showcase on how powerful it is to have a specialised high level DSL optimised for ZK. Proving integrity of arbitrary computation is extremely powerful, and it can benefit widely to the Bitcoin ecosystem, and the good news: even without any soft fork! Yes, there are use cases and things than can be improved using STARK proofs, completely offchain. Stay tuned, it's only the start!
the madlads at @StarkWareLtd have done it! 😎 picking up from where @ZeroSync_ left off (SPV verification), the Shinigami project seeks to create STARK proofs capable of verifying Bitcoin Script _execution_ in the future, you'll be able to verify a single recursive proof that proves valid* execution for the entire chain 🤯

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ Fractal Bitcoin security issues. Be careful if you are running a @fractal_bitcoin node using the official docker release, the RPC credentials are hardcoded, not configurable via environment variables, and RPC server is exposed publicly and vulnerable to attacks. So many bad security practices in this bitcoin conf file.. rpcallowip=0.0.0.0/0: This is the most concerning setting. It allows RPC connections from any IP address, which is very dangerous if exposed to the internet. It effectively opens your node to potential attacks from anywhere. zmqpubhashblock=tcp://0.0.0.0:8330 and zmqpubrawtx=tcp://0.0.0.0:8331 These settings allow ZeroMQ connections from any IP, which could be a security risk if exposed. maxconnections=0 This removes the limit on the number of connections, which could potentially lead to resource exhaustion. To be honest I even thought that I was looking at a scam Github repo from a wrong organisation. So I checked your website, and again this is bad because it's not trivial to find your Github organisation. It opens the door to a lot of potential scams. After navigating I finally found the Github org, and it happened that I was (unfortunately) looking at the right repository. The Github org does not even have a link to your website, or at least your logo... You are exposing node runners to dangerous attacks. This is not serious.

Vitalik asked this question in 2022: Could we replace KZG with arithmetic hashes for Data Availability Sampling ? The answer back then was no. But I think it could be a different answer today. I was very upset by the introduction of a trusted setup on Ethereum for proto danksharding. Even if arguably it was the most successful and well executed ceremony ever (Over 141,000 participants contributed randomness, making it the largest trusted setup in history), I don't like this precedent. I was hoping that we would let more time to explore possible alternatives. I am happy that Vitalik did some research after I suggested we explore FRI based alternatives to KZG, and he took time to think about potential alternatives, unfortunately back at this time in 2022 the consensus was that those alternatives would not be practical and they were not considered seriously. 2 years later, a research paper has been published: FRIDA: Data Availability Sampling from FRI (Mathias Hall-Andersen, ZkSecurity - Mark Simkin, Ethereum Foundation - Benedikt Wagner, Ethereum Foundation) eprint.iacr.org/2024/248 Recently, I spent more time thinking about DA and especially in the context of Bitcoin, as part of our plans for Starknet expansion to Bitcoin. It's clear that rollups will be extremely limited by Bitcoin DA. So the natural following thinking is what kind of alt DA could make sense while facing those limitations. And surprisingly I think there is no obvious answer. I came to the exact same conclusion as described in the FRIDA paper: While their work thoroughly lays the formal foundations for data availability sampling, the constructions are either prohibitively expensive, use a trusted setup, or have a download complexity for light clients scales with a square root of the data size. It's true! None of the existing alt DAs has all at the same time: - no trusted setup - zk friendly for verifying equivalence of commitments - no fraud proof system As usual, I like to demonstrate ideas with an exploration project. So we started building FRIEDA (github.com/keep-starknet-str…): A Rust implementation of data availability sampling using Fast Reed-Solomon Interactive Oracle Proofs (FRI), inspired by the FRIDA paper (s/o @0xLucqs for the implementation of FRIEDA in Rust, and thanks @UHaboeck for the help on the moon math). Specifically it uses the Mersenne M31 prime field (2³¹ - 1), the one used in STWO prover for Circle STARKs. It's working and has basic functions to sample and reconstruct data. Ok, having this library is cool, but I wanted to go further and start thinking on how to build a DA layer that would be optimised for ZK rollups and that would offer those properties: - No Trusted Setup - ZK friendly commitments - Optimised bandwidth requirements for light client So we started another exploration project, Mikan, a ZK friendly DA layer using FRIDA for Data Availability Sampling. Mikan repo: github.com/keep-starknet-str… Mikan is a ZK-Rollup friendly data availability layer built on the Malachite consensus framework (s/o @AdiSeredinschi and Informal System team for this great piece of software). It provides strong data availability guarantees using STARK-friendly cryptographic primitives without requiring a trusted setup. The current MVP status has consensus engine using Malachite, block creation with blobs, data sampling, basic mempool. Here is a demo showing data retrieval, sampling, blob creation. Right now it's an exploration project, but I would love to check interest from different rollups teams (especially Bitcoin ones cc @AlpenLabs @citrea_xyz) to explore this further together. @VitalikButerin do you think it would make sense to restart discussions on removing the need for KZG for DAS ? Generally, I really like purity and simplicity of hash based commitment schemes for everything, it became more or less the norm now for proving schemes but maybe it's time to also consider it for other things like DA.
An exploration on whether or not we could replace KZG with arithmetic hashes, eg. Poseidon, in EIP-4844 (proto-danksharding): ethresear.ch/t/arithmetic-ha… Summary: yeah it's possible, but there are a lot of tradeoffs. Thanks @abdelstark for suggesting this topic!

Starknet is strange right ? Ok let's make it even more strange and start to Zig-pill a bit the ecosystem. Let's start with a Cairo VM in Zig ? Ok let's build it together fam: github.com/keep-starknet-str… #cairo #zig

Breaking news coming from El Salvador today, let me introduce you the first Starknet powered Bitcoin ATM in the world! @fireismyflag did the first ever Bitcoin purchase from a @k1elsalvador ATM where the funding is coming from a Starknet wallet via an atomic swap to Lightning!

Vitalik: "it's very difficult to be both the best L2 and the best ZK team, the two are very different skill sets." StarkWare: "Hold my beer!" Seriously how you can say all of this and not mention the literal only team in the world that has those very different skill sets. The team that literally built everything from scratch for years, while constantly pushing the state of the art. While everyone was taking shortcuts, or trying indeed as you said to focus on one or another, and while all of them could reuse a lot of existing infrastructure. We could not and did not want to. Simply because we wanted to build for the long run, we wanted to build with the most future proof architecture, and keep full sovereignty on our roadmap to execute faster. It was a huge initial investment, but yeah, was worth it. Now that we have those extremely solid foundations and that we demonstrated the excellence on both parts, the world will start to understand the power of Starknet engine. Ultimate scaling engine, to bring maximal integrity of computation, while keep succint verification. Imagine when this engine also provides privacy, but that's a story for another day. Anyway, sad to see this permanent hypocrisy and denial growing in the Ethereum ecosystem. I said few weeks ago that we scare them, yeah, I do believe we do. Not only because we love Bitcoin and want to contribute to hyperbitcoinization of the world, but also because Starknet has it's own identity, culture and ecosystem of people. It goes beyond the tech only. Anyway, Starknet will melt faces.
I really appreciate both @sandeepnailwal's personal contributions and @0xPolygon's immensely valuable role in the ethereum ecosystem. To recap: * Polygon hosts @Polymarket, which is probably the single most successful example of a "not just boring finance" app that has actually been successful and provided value. * Polygon has also hosted plenty of other applications that have needed high levels of scalability. * Polygon put a lot of resources into ZK-EVM proving early on, both by bringing in Jordi Baylina's team and through other efforts, and greatly helped in moving the space forward. * Polygon has built infrastructure for proof aggregation (AggLayer) and many other things And also: * Sandeep put a lot of his personal effort into @CryptoRelief_, which has made large contributions to biomedical infrastructure and research inside India. * He voluntarily returned $190M of proceeds from the SHIB tokens that I donated to me, which has made the whole Balvi open source anti-airborne-disease biotech program possible, and possibly accelerated our understanding of important anti-pandemic topics like clean indoor air by years. @cz_binance also recently donated $10M in BNB to me to help continue the program, and I've recently added ~$20M of my own funds (no, not from selling ETH 😛) Big appreciation to both for this. Most whales passively think that things like this are cool, but are not willing to get off their butts and personally contribute, unless it's in the form of a company that keeps everything proprietary to become yet another vehicle for personal profit. @sandeepnailwal (and CZ) are special here. On the ZK issue (after all, you do need a proof system to get the full security guarantees that L2s are meant to provide), I can see Polygon's difficult bind: they supported Jordi's team putting their heart and souls into the tech at a time when that tech was still too early for production, and so they contributed to the early and most difficult part of the learning curve, but at that part of the learning curve it was difficult for them themselves to directly benefit from the fruits of their labor. Since then, the market structure has split into L2 teams and ZK teams (eg. @SuccinctLabs, @RiscZero, more recently @brevis_zk, many others) being separate entities, which I think makes more sense than the previous approach of every L2 doing (OP or ZK) proof systems in-house: it's very difficult to be both the best L2 and the best ZK team, the two are very different skill sets. Personally, I hope that at some point soon @0xPolygon can just pick up off the shelf ZK tech that has now gotten quite good and apply it to the PoS chain to get full stage 1 and later stage 2 guarantees from the ethereum L1. Many don't realize just how much ZK tech has improved; proving costs are around $0.0001/tx, and many L2s I talk to are very surprised when I tell them the recent numbers, they're still stuck in the mindset that ZK is maybe ok for ethereum L1-scale chains but unviable for anything hyperscale. The latest ZK-EVMs, and live projects like @Lighter_xyz, show that this is false.

ZK™️ 2cents: - this does not invalidate @zksync tech at all and should be clearly separated from it - it's not about individuals of the organisation and should not be an excuse to attack them personally - there is no animosity or hostility and nothing is irrevocable - it's simple to fix and we can do it together - once it's done, we will all be with you and acknowledge the effort - then move on, back to building and: ZK (without TM) is the endgame What I would want to see is: - Acknowledging the mistake (we all do mistakes, it's fine) - Act upon it and withdraw the application or find a way to make it under public domain Meanwhile I will probably continue to enjoy some funny jokes and memes about it. @gluk64 the ball is in your camp, use it wisely mate.
