creators of digital content (data + media) don't get paid, most of the money is made by aggregators (google, fb, etc.) w virtually unbreakable network fx and 90%+ gross margins
this lead to internet ux becoming increasingly bad over last 20 years: paid, ever-increasing subs, paywalls, cookie banners & legalese, intrusive ads as publishers try to wrestle control from aggregators
thesis is the problem stems from lack of micro-payments infra + missing ownership model, two things blockchains solve
micro-payments bc all digital content has an inorganic pricing floor, so bundling is necessary, forcing creators to participate or lose - and, people prefer lower prices, and paying for what they get
digital ownership bc piracy is bad, but licensing and rental models are unfair and expensive for consumers - leaving them unable to opt-out without losing the media they paid for - and, therefore w increasing wallet share going to aggregators, creators that try to break free from the system struggle to monetize
these are things the early internet didn't care about, bc of the enormous subsidies (funded by VCs and public markets), global bandwidth access propagation (default growth keeping shareholders happy without margin expansion imperative), and bc it took a long time for creators and publishers to figure out what was going on
so the time is now to build a better content experience; peak frustration from creators and users, and the invention and readiness of robust, fast, cheap digital payments & ownership infra w Solana et al. that better content experience is DRiP
