Tom Cruise's "Vanilla Sky" has been the only movie ever to get permission to shut down entire Times Square for shooting a movie, they paid $1 million and got 3 hours on a sunday morning to film Cruise running around in a dream sequence hallucinating an empty Times Square.

Vanilla sky was not the only film to do this. The film βI Am Legendβ staring Will Smith also shut down large portions of New York City including Times Square. They ended up paying roughly $40 million in all for their on location filming..
