To this day, it is still 7th worldwide, the oldest time that is currently on a worldwide top 10 in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Today, one of my world records in Mario Kart 8 remained unbeaten for 3,000 days (8.2 years).
It's quite shocking how much time has passed. While I don't play this game anymore, I think it's ultimately changed the trajectory of my life for the better.
Here are some things that I've learned through competing at a high level in this game:
Overcome imposter syndrome by faking it until you make it
Imposter syndrome is really hard if you haven't dealt with it before. It affects your self-confidence and really messes with your head as you doubt yourself. When I got my first world record at 14 years old, I thought I got lucky. Deep down I didn't really think I deserved it and thought I wasn't good enough like the other players I looked up to. Over time though, I learned to just fake it until you make it. Eventually if you keep repeating that you're as good if not better than the others, you end up believing and manifesting it.
Being an underdog is a really great gift
When you want to reach the top, you have a bar that you need to exceed set by the players above you. Meanwhile those at the top do not have that bar -- they set it. As a result, top players tend to get complacent and don't improve as fast as you do because they don't have any pressure to do so. Looking in retrospect, I feel that this is similar to startups competing with bigger companies. Startups need to move fast and improve quickly, while bigger companies don't feel pressured to innovate.
Thinking on first principles is how to improve fast
When learning a new course, I always broke a world record down to the finer details and learned why something was faster or slower. Eventually that's how I understood the game at a fundamental level, leading me to make optimizations in records and even creating new strats. I use first principles today when learning anything. As long as you know the fundamentals and can build up from there, you can become a master at any given subject.
Don't let others know anything unless it benefits you
World record grinding is not just about skill -- it's about mind games. If you can influence your competitors, you can make their actions work to your advantage. There were times where I would strategically not tell other people about tracks I was playing just so the person holding the current world record would not feel threatened to improve it. After I beat them, they would not be able to improve immediately since it came as a surprise, and I would keep improving from there. The opposite is true as well. When I noticed another person starting to improve on a track, I would come back and raise the bar even higher, causing the person to get demotivated and stop playing. When you are competing against others in anything, you need to carefully control the flow of information you give to other people.
Being delusional is better than being realistic
I feel that a lot of these world records happened because I set very unrealistic expectations of myself. You don't know what you don't know, and you just have to keep trying. It's always good to push yourself to your limit, because you might actually exceed your and others expectations, leading to growth. If you're always realistic, you might not actually know your potential.
I'm currently building a startup at YCombinator's winter 2025 batch, and I feel that a lot of these learnings apply right now to what I'm doing. I'm really grateful to have had these experiences, and I hope to gain more learnings as I continue on with my life. Thanks for reading

It took 1678 days, but I no longer have an MK8DX World Record. No, I'm not upset nor do I care that it happened. I'm super happy with how far this game has come and how I took part in its history. I've moved on long ago.
Besides, I still have 6 MK8U World Records anyway.

I will instead jump from stereo madness to a top 5 demon. My logic is that no matter how long it takes, it’ll still be on main list when I beat it lol

I still won't play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as often as I used to since I have a lot going on IRL, but I still want to achieve World Records on the new tracks before I get bored of the game again. I am extremely excited to see how this goes. I may start streaming again in the future.
