Hats off to the team at @omadahealth for over 10 years of advocacy to expand Medicare access to Diabetes Prevention Programs (DPP). While the finish line is still ahead, the win highlighted in this article is a significant milestone.
Fun fact: years ago, my Co-founder Adrian James and I approached the CDC to ask what it would take to include virtual delivery for DPP. As expected, they wanted evidence. We quickly launched a trial comparing our outcomes to their standards, and after publication, digital DPP was embraced not just for us but for the entire field of innovators.
Still, to date Medicare FFS has only supported in-person providers. If passed, this bill would change that, allowing Omada and the wider community to serve Medicare beneficiaries in new ways.

Kaiser Permanente + Geisinger. So much opacity on the strategic merits. Two takes:
A. Is KP straying from its mission by taking advantage of the intense pressure all providers are under in 2023? Is capitalism the drive? Geisinger was having a difficult time, like many (most) providers now. Did they take advantage and is this just opportunistic? But why!? They’re private and don’t “need” this.
B. Is KP coming in as a backstop to key and high quality integrated health systems? Is survival capital 95% of what they’re offering? Are they supporting the ecosystem in a time of dire need? Yes of course the deal terms have to be sweetened and make even conservative financial sense. Are they the JP Morgan to the First Republics?
I’m in B. KP will become a conglomerate of integrated care providers, not because they need to, but because they can and think it’s the right thing to do against their mission.

I say this about @omadahealth all the time. The fact that @samiinkinen's Virta (respect!) and Omada get a spotlight at all is a statement on a big F scorecard for chronic care. Amongst steady progress, we've not done anything yet wrt epidemiology. Gotta get to the millions+.

Heartbroken to hear that @ShawnELeavitt is no longer with us. He inspired dozens of health care entrepreneurs through his dedication to innovation, and an open mind + heart. By pushing and testing the edges of employer benefits, he made health care better for all. We’ll miss you.
