The ultimate unfair advantage: startup people who are left alone to do startup things in a big company with lots of cash and distribution.
It's rare, but when it happens, it's like witnessing magic.
Take, for example, Cash App. It was originally created at a Square/Block hackathon and has been the top finance app for five years, even becoming its own division.
Or the journey of the Shop app, previously the Arrive app, born from a pitch I made while at Shopify. We were able to dominate the App Store partly because of our access to millions of order confirmations, leading to hundreds of millions of downloads and tens of millions of active users.
This is what can happen when startup energy is nurtured and survives long enough in a big company to make a dent in the industry.
