40 years ago this month, music history was made when Prince dropped his 9-track album Purple Rain, followed by the motion picture of the same name. The album and film won Prince two Grammys, two American Music Awards, a Brit Award, and an Academy Award for "Best Original Song Score." The Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry in 2012 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important."

On this day in 1997, Prince guest starred on Muppets Tonight. He was the first guest star on Season Two of Muppets Tonight, then going under the name "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince." This guest appearance allowed Prince to show his effortless knack for comedy and perform songs alongside Kermit the Frog, Rizzo the Rat, and several other muppets.
Speaking about the first read through of the script with Prince, head writer of Muppets Tonight Kirk Thatcher revealed, “He and his people seemed to get the jokes and enjoyed the fun we were having with him and he thankfully had very few notes. He just smiled and giggled quietly at the script and seemed very open to it all.” 💜

She was also a singer, songwriter and widely known as one of Prince’s siblings. She shared much time with him during his life. They were raised together by their parents Mattie and John L. Nelson. Tyka frequented Paisley Park, attended events, and celebrations to support Prince's legacy. Tyka travelled around the world to thank fans for loving her brother. She loved them and we'd like to thank them for loving her back. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with her sons, President and Sir, as well as her entire family during this time of loss. On this day in 2004, Prince embarked on his Musicology Live 2004ever tour to promote his 28th studio album, Musicology. The release, which included tracks like "Call My Name," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Life 'O' The Party," was given to concert goers who attended the performances, while the physical retail version was available in the UK on April 19th, and in the US on April 20th.
"Musicology is all about music the way it used to be and it’s about getting the music to the people. That’s why everyone who comes to the show gets a copy of the record. 24 years ago today, Prince attended the 14th annual Soul Train Music Awards, where he was named "Artist of the Decade." He was presented his award by none other than the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy fame.
During Prince’s acceptance speech, he took the opportunity to share his reflections about the talent of his fellow black artists, and unfair contracts, asking the audience to “imagine what we’ll all be like in our own game.”
Prince was always a pioneer in artistic freedom for musicians, and is respected by so many because he stood up boldly, and unapologetically, to fight the power.

Thank you for celebrating Musicology with us this month! On April 19 2004, the album arrived in stores in the UK, followed the next day in the US. The final song on Musicology is "Reflection," a slow number that features a prominent acoustic guitar to finish out the album.
On February 19, 2004, The Tavis Smiley show premiered a live version of “Reflection” with an intimate reunion of Prince and Wendy Melvoin of The Revolution.
“It was just him and me, and he was gorgeous. He was the guy I knew when I first met him,” remembered Wendy. “It was beautiful to see him. I held on to him and kept kissing him and hugging him and telling him I loved him.”
The performance was also made available as a digital download through the NPG Music Club.

During the ceremony, a super cool Prince joined an All-Star band - consisting of Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison among others - to masterfully perform the final guitar solo on fellow inductee George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” This almost 3-minute history-making spotlight wowed the music industry and cemented Prince as perhaps the greatest musician of all time and an all-time great guitarist.
