A major failure of the Nigerian education system is that kids are not taught to be curious. To interrogate why things are the way they are. To ask questions and reason them out logically. To debate in order to learn.

I left Nigeria alone at 16 with $5k for school fees and upkeep.. Not once did I think I should turn back and go back to Nigeria (till much much later - 14 years later) but it was a real struggle to make ends meet and not rosy at all. Briefly some of my challenges: Being a janitor in your own university - mopping the floors of the cafeteria as your classmates sit and eat. Washing toilets. Working during football games selling drinks. Not being able to afford $5 for a movie with your friends... Asking a dentist to pull a tooth out because I didn't have $300... could barely afford the $30 I ended up paying Almost dropping out of USC but for a scholarship from Shell (where I worked the summer)... I didn't come back to Nigeria for about 6 years Through it all, I just believed my present would not define my future and kept focus on doing well at school. So grateful for all those who helped me on my way. Eternally grateful Japa is not easy...

One issue Nigerians need to address is their discomfort with people who hold different views. We let things get personal too quickly. It is fine to disagree. Listen, understand, debate, don't hold it against people. We need to understand this very basic tenet for progress!

Today we laid to rest a legend of Nigeria, Professor Mark Okoro Chijioke. He was the first Nigerian to earn a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering (1958). I always loved engaging Mark. We would play chess, and talk about various goings on in the world. It was always clear how his life impacted his kids, two of whom are my besties, Chinezi and Eric Chijioke (also Paga CTO). Mark had great impact on Nigeria and the world. He led the engineer corp for Biafra during the civil war. I was lucky to interview him for Story Corp seven years ago and it was a fascinating discussion. You can listen to part of the interview here: archive.storycorps.org/inter…
