Africa ↔ global finance, both directions.
Crossmint's payout network reaches Africa on Paga's rails.
Paga ships Stablecoins wallets so simple the blockchain disappears.
Excited to be building with @rodrifernandezt@alfongj and the @crossmint team.

A major failure of the Nigerian education system is that kids are not taught to be curious. To interrogate why things are the way they are. To ask questions and reason them out logically. To debate in order to learn.
.@segalink you've been working tirelessly for years on this matter and now too - I know. But honestly your tweet was very irresponsible. Many of us, including me, have our experiences of police brutality. The joint goal is simple - end police brutality! It is together we achieve
I left Nigeria alone at 16 with $5k for school fees and upkeep..
Not once did I think I should turn back and go back to Nigeria (till much much later - 14 years later) but it was a real struggle to make ends meet and not rosy at all. Briefly some of my challenges:
Being a janitor in your own university - mopping the floors of the cafeteria as your classmates sit and eat. Washing toilets.
Working during football games selling drinks.
Not being able to afford $5 for a movie with your friends...
Asking a dentist to pull a tooth out because I didn't have $300... could barely afford the $30 I ended up paying
Almost dropping out of USC but for a scholarship from Shell (where I worked the summer)...
I didn't come back to Nigeria for about 6 years
Through it all, I just believed my present would not define my future and kept focus on doing well at school.
So grateful for all those who helped me on my way. Eternally grateful
Japa is not easy...

Hey @ChelseaFC can we @paga do a sponsorship deal for your shirts? Since you can't get the payments now we structure to fund Ukrainian (after the war) & Nigerian kids to go to school?
Hit me up if interested
My people LIRS has come again o.
Say I owe more than I earned 🫠
How can personal income tax be more than you earned?
Maybe it's time for Paga HQ to move from Lagos!!
"You're not ambitious enough" he said to me and my CTO...Then asked me if I knew this other company, Dash, who was doing crazy numbers...He then led their seed round...
Well...here was your ambitious founder...
😂
Dash, the Ghanaian fintech has shut down. The startup raised $86.1 million in five years and attracted big-name investors. It raised $32.8 million in a seed round—the second largest seed round for an African startup—in 2021. dlvr.it/Sx4x1F
In 2010 my driver & I were beaten by the police guards of @followlasg gov @tundefashola. They threatened to lock us up. We were scared for our lives. No one knew where we were. All because I took photos of the iconic Nitel building in Marina.

This is the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger.
I've just concluded visits to hospitals with victims of this unfortunate shooting incident at Lekki .
Banking in the US is so broken.
I'm trying to send money via wire from BofA to Chase. It's been returned twice now.
What a mess.
In Nigeria? Instant transfer. Real time notification.
Thanks to the innovators at @NIBSS_NG y'all really deserve accolades 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Really proud of the “General”, my 97 year old grandmother-in-law, who was conferred Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
She has served her community in Calabar for decades. Opening her home to the homeless & less fortunate.
A true example & a lovely human being 🎉
My first boss at Deloitte, Kevin Kelly, gave me the best advice on day one:
"Your job is to make me look good. Do excellent work & I'll keep giving you more responsibility. Do that and I'll take care of you"
Taking this advice to heart has had a positive impact on my career!
One issue Nigerians need to address is their discomfort with people who hold different views. We let things get personal too quickly.
It is fine to disagree. Listen, understand, debate, don't hold it against people.
We need to understand this very basic tenet for progress!
Saw the cost of buying two new generators for the Paga HQ today. This is a cost none of my peers in developed countries have to worry about in their businesses.
I'm going to ask my team to put together a report on how much we have spent on generators, including fuel, since our inception 16 years ago.
From a global POV, that is an unproductive use of capital.
I'm beyond done with all the leadership in Nigeria. Y'all are a disgrace to a great people. All of you. No exceptions. APC, PDP, whatever you call yourselves. Useless.
Found an old coaster biscuit in my drawer. Compare it to one I bought Friday and you see how Newbisco (the manufacturer) is dealing with inflation in Nigeria
Saw tweet of someone announcing leaving fintech A for B. Just less than a yr ago he announced joining A.
Genuinely worried for the remote work generation that bounces around.
Future employers will wonder if there is a reason you couldn't stay longer than a year anywhere 😐
I'm so proud of @AffiSupaStar & team @ReelFruit as they inaugurate their new factory in Ogun.
800 Metric ton dried fruit processing facility running 100% on gas!
Creating over 280 jobs!
Affi's tenacity has been a joy to witness. I can't wait to see Reelfruit in Whole Foods!
You can always find Nigerians everywhere. Just met 3 Nigerians who live in Soller, Spain. A small village on the Mallorca island. I saw the traditional attire and overheard them speaking Igbo so I went to say hello. They live here...
In July, @mypaga crossed N1.5 Trillion in transaction value proceed since commercial operations launched Aug 2012!!
Using nominal exchange rates each month this is $5.4B!
Thanks Naija for your trust in Paga 🙌🏾

Any foreigner who arrived this evening at the Lagos airport witnessed the challenges ahead for Nigeria.
- power went out at the airport.
- military causing havoc because (I think) the Chief of Army Staff was arriving.
It was a royal mess. Can't even explain.
💯
At a time when divorce was really frowned upon my mom left her marriage for her mental well being. The trauma she faced in that marriage affected her quite a bit. I'm glad she did, had me after and never married my dad.
So excited! 10 years ago today I embarked on a journey to solve the "use of cash" 🥳🥳🥳
I was tired of carrying wads of cash & dealing with POS errors. @mypaga was born out of my frustration & decided to solve what is a global problem.
Thank you Nigeria for trusting us 🙏🏾
It's a breach of trust for an employee to leak a company town hall video or any content of confidential communication.
People need to take this seriously as we probably all want our company leaders to be transparent and open especially in a time like this.
I gather that now, to renew your passport, you need to get a letter from your state of origin showing that you are from there.
What sort of STUPID policy is this?
So I should go to Edo State, which I have visited two or three times max, to get a document. How would they know I am from there?
We create our own problems.
This was rude and disrespectful to the Nigerian players. You should apologize.
You know better "Stefffeen, however the hell you pronounce your name, Smith"
You'd be livid if someone did that to you!
I've been quite surprised at the number of people who expect me to have the same political views as my wife.
Where does this line of thinking come from?
No two people share the same brain so why can't we have different views and that be ok?
Big Milestone for Paga @mypaga & Digital Acceleration
We crossed 3 Trillion Naira in transaction values processed since the start of commercial operations in 2012.
Hit N2 Trillion in March 2020
Hit N3 Trillion in May 2021
15 months to process 1 Trillion!

Beyond embarrassing - this is the post office in the most expensive zip code in Nigeria
From the post master general to the president they should all be ashamed
US citizens now have to apply for entry to the UK.
Costs $13.42
I just applied and got an email saying it is being processed.
One minute later, I got an email approval to go in and out of the UK till March 2027.
cc @almaasinobi - as I was typing this post I noticed your UK visa post.
Today we laid to rest a legend of Nigeria, Professor Mark Okoro Chijioke. He was the first Nigerian to earn a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering (1958).
I always loved engaging Mark. We would play chess, and talk about various goings on in the world. It was always clear how his life impacted his kids, two of whom are my besties, Chinezi and Eric Chijioke (also Paga CTO).
Mark had great impact on Nigeria and the world. He led the engineer corp for Biafra during the civil war. I was lucky to interview him for Story Corp seven years ago and it was a fascinating discussion.
You can listen to part of the interview here: archive.storycorps.org/inter…
Congrats @MI_Abaga & @EniolaMafe 🎉🎉🎉
May God bless your union and I wish you a life together filled with laughter and God's blessings! Love you guys 🙌🏾
Of all the Democrats who ran for president this cycle, @AndrewYang would have been their best chance for victory. Amazing how the "establishment" did not see that. They might still win but not with the level of enthusiasm Andrew could have generated.
The Paga Group has redomiciled to the UK 🇬🇧!
The Paga Group is the holding company for our operations in all countries - Nigeria, México, Ethiopia, and the United Kingdom.
Very excited about this move and look forward to working with @tradegovuk to promote trade with the UK!
Good question. I should do better and not use my phone during online church. I'll stop using it. The reason I tell you not to use it is so you can be focused on the sermon. I should also be focused. I'll do better. Thanks for calling out my hypocrisy. Do you know what that means?
Great to meet Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO of JP Morgan Chase. He had a roundtable lunch with an intimate group of investors and entrepreneurs from Nigeria.
Naija...there are companies fighting & you might not be able to easily buy your airtime from your bank.
Look #findyourfreedom
Buy your airtime or data on Paga & get 2% cash back
Download the new Paga App & find your Freedom!
smart.link/5bd8714531ccc#findyourfreedom
For those analyzing fintech in Nigeria:
1. App downloads does not equal registratiins & is vanity. True in general but also smartphone penetration is very low - most consumers are USSD or agents to access services
2. Registered users does not equal activated user
✌🏾️
I've found Twitter to be better tool to meet people - or network - thank LinkedIn.
Wondering why?
My initial thought is that Twitter is more like the bar (casual) while LinkedIn the conference (need to be on A game but want to get the hell out asap)...
What do you think?
Major kudos to my team @paga. We are achieving very strong numbers across all our business areas.
2021 full year:
35m transactions
N1.2 Trillion
2022 through May:
25m transactions
N1.2 Trillion
Engagement and use of Paga & Doroki is scaling fast 🚀🚀
Thx to our customers 🙏🏾
Probably the most painful thing in Nigerian banking is to seek a refund on a transfer you mistakenly sent to the wrong Bank acct.
The process is painful, the recipient might run with the money, so many issues.
Always double and triple-check you are sending to the right acct!
Wole Soyinka came up to me once and asked if we knew each other. I told him no but it was a pleasure meeting him. I then introduced myself and asked him to take a picture. He didn't respond but just bone faced walked away. So rude.
Please move seats! 🙃
For those saying "I would have used the opportunity to talk to Wole Soyinka..."
Well, I have shared a seat with Wole Soyinka at the OR Tambo in South Africa waiting for a flight. Everyone who tried to talk to him was declined with a hand wave.
To Jesus be your glory.
Let's be clear as well, the @inecnigeria
process for voting, collating the votes, and announcing them, is worse than my 4th-grade elections for class captain. And I'm being generous.
Rule #1 of Twitter - You don't need to respond. Move on
Rule #2 of Twitter - If someone quote tweets you & you don't like it, you don't need to respond. Move on
Rule #3 of Twitter - If you're getting replies you don't like, mute thread, mute person, block sef. Move on!
✌🏾️
I think Nigerians should stop celebrating "independence" from British rule. Feels to me we need another independence from our current political class. All parties included in that conclusion. Everyone. The people of Nigeria need a real democracy at all levels of governance. QED!
Starting and running a business in Nigeria is HARD! Can't over state it.
Doing this in Northern Nigeria & in Agriculture is beyond beyond HARD!
Major kudos to @ShoutsAndMiras for her tenacity and dedication to her vision 👊🏾
Processed Tomatoes coming right up! 🥳🥳🥳
I had the most epic France v Argentina world cup final on #Fifa23 yesterday...I played as France
Argentina went up 2 nil in the first half but France fought back to tie and force extra time...Mbappe fired in two goals in the first half of extra time to win it!
#FIFAWorldCup
Inside that gist...I wonder if something similar played out early on.
Either of you took cookies to the library hoping you run into the other one. Or something like that.
I appreciate your wife's approach...and the learning for your son...in life you snooze, you lose...make a move 🔥
Paga Group is a teenager today! What started out as a simple idea to make it simple to pay & get paid is now 3 business lines:
- Consumer Payments - @paga
- Embedded Finance - Paga PaaS Paga.dev
- Seller/Merchant - @doroki_ng
Thanks to our amazing team 🎉🎉🎉
🚨 The best news today, guys...Nigeria is off the FATF grey list!
Congrats to everyone at NFIU, CBN, and the entire financial industry. We worked hard to get here.
This is a big deal because it opens up the country for FDI and enagement from the West especially
With the Paga team today for our quarterly town hall...We've had a strong year so far & I'm excited to share with the team as we outline our path towards end of year!
TPV is accelerating:
2021: 1.2 T Naira
2022: 3.2 T
2023 (Jan - Aug): 3 T!
August was our highest TPV ever 🚀
.@HarvardHBS wrote a case on @paga 🎉🎉
I was just a guest at the first teaching of the case & it was a fascinating discussion.
The case is still confidential but should be made public later in the year and then taught to the MBA class.

All Nigerians are under banked. This is a sad reality.
If I want a new car in the US, I don't call my bank in advance. I walk into the auto dealer, pick the car, take a seat, fill the loan application, and in less than 30 mins walk out with the loan and car.
A major Nigerian bank is rejecting a resolution because it was signed using DocuSign.
Their feedback is that we should sign "physically or digitally." 🙈
Leading teams is HARD. Building a business is HARD.
Kudos to those who give leadership a shot, whether starting their own business or in an existing business.
Poch has shown us clear example of his poor tactical sense.
Only a stupid coach would change defenders with 3 mins to go and just before a set piece when up by only one goal and playing a team in relegation zone.
And it was the two new players that screwed up
#Pochout
