Today marks the most surreal milestone of my life: @socialsnowball has officially been acquired by @dotdigital (LON: DOTD), and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement. I originally started this business out of my own frustration: As an ecommerce brand, there weren’t any good platforms for partnering with creators and customers as affiliates. I decided I was going to change that. Over the past 5 years, what started as a simple post-purchase referral widget has turned into the leading creator and affiliate management platform for Shopify brands. What started as a sketch on a piece of notebook paper is now trusted by over 2,500 leading brands like True Classic and G FUEL. What started as a 20 year old kid's idea has forever changed the way ecommerce brands approach influencer marketing. Over the years we have accomplished so many incredible things that I am deeply proud of: - Created the first influencer-affiliate platform for Shopify brands - Invented the concept of Safelinks, which is now a standard feature in every major influencer platform - Built a full time team of 25 incredible people - Were the first influencer platform ever to integrate with TikTok Shop - Built an amazing IRL community of influencer marketers - Created a high production video course academy to teach influencer marketing strategy to the world - Partnered with hundreds of amazing agencies - Spoke on stage at countless events all over the world But what I am the most proud of, is the fact that we did all of this while bootstrapping and remaining profitable. In the early days, we were rejected by every VC we spoke to. Instead of giving up, we powered through and figured out how to make it work without taking on funding. In hindsight, this was the best thing that could have ever happened to the business. Now, we are partnering with DotDigital to take things to the next level. To our customers, partners, affiliates, and the entire DTC community: expect to see a lot more of Social Snowball. This acquisition is enabling us to move at a significantly faster speed than was ever possible, and we have an insane roadmap that I can't want to share more on soon. I will still be leading the ship, but now I have more firepower to work with than ever before. To the Social Snowball team, I have so much gratitude for all of you. Mentors are cool, but how about a peer who is at your level and facing the same challenges as you? Three years ago I met @foreplayzach , and we immediately hit it off. We were both bootstrapping B2B SaaS businesses, with a similar ICP, and we were just about the same MRR at the time. What's really crazy is that, over the course of the next 3 years, the MRR of Social Snowball and Foreplay have grown at a nearly identical pace. ⚠️ There is a massive shift happening in the DTC affiliate space that you need to be aware of to win in 2024 ⚠️ Simply put, the type of affiliate brands are partnering with is changing, and fast. 10 years ago, the word "affiliate" in the ecom world meant something very different than it does today. Back then, the only affiliates brands were partnering with is now what I refer to as the "legacy affiliate". Under this umbrella are publishers, bloggers, listicles, review sites, media buyers, etc. Today, those types of affiliate partnerships are still important but its undeniable that there is a new type of affiliate that is becoming more and more important for DTC brands, and I like to refer to these as "modern affiliates". Under this umbrella are creators, social media influencers, ambassadors, and even a brand's own customers can be powerful affiliates. But here's the problem - From a technology standpoint, the user experience and functionality that you need to facilitate a successful partnership with a "legacy" affiliate is extremely different than what you need to facilitate a successful partnership with a "modern" affiliate. To put it simply: If you try to onboard a TikTok creator or ambassador into an affiliate platform that was built for publishers, it will be the worst nightmare of a user experience you could possibly imagine. Everything from onboarding, generating codes/links, attribution, payments, gifting, etc. will be a disaster. Many ecom brands have given up on modern affiliates altogether because of this reason alone. And this is the exact reason why we built Social Snowball. Before Social Snowball, there was no affiliate platform focused on enabling partnerships with modern affiliates, and making the UX on both the brands and affiliates side as smooth, frictionless, and intuitive as possible. Sure, there are influencer CRM tools focused on engagement rates and other vanity metrics. And sure, there are refer-a-friend programs focused on loyalty, not customer acquisition. But before Social Snowball, if you wanted to onboard a customer or creator into an actual affiliate program, you'd be forced to use one of these outdated platform and be in for many nasty surprises. So, this is why Social Snowball exists. We are the first affiliate platform for DTC that is laser focused on modern affiliates. To make this a reality, we had to rebuild every fundamental component of the traditional affiliate model from the ground up so that it works seamlessly for modern affiliates. But now, we power over 1,700 brands who are prioritizing the diversification of their customer acquisition away from unpredictable paid ads channels. And, we are just getting started. Three years ago, I tried to raise a venture round for Social Snowball. Our MRR had plateaued, and I felt confident that raising money would solve all of our problems. I spent the next months pitching just about every VC in the space, just to be rejected by every single one I spoke to. After 6 painful months, I decided to give up on fundraising and shift my focus back to the business. A couple months later, we broke out of the plateau and started growing fast. Fast forward a few years, and we are still growing faster than ever, and never took any VC money. In hindsight, I am so incredibly grateful that every VC rejected us back then. Finally met up with our CTO Brent in person and I gotta give this guy a well deserved shoutout. As a non-technical founder, the amount of blindspots I had while starting Social Snowball is insane. And those blind spots came with a price. I was taken advantage of by dev agencies, scammed by Upwork developers, and ultimately had no way of truly vetting the in house engineering talent we ended up hiring. Fast forward to now, our engineering team went from an anchor dragging behind us to a rocket propelling us forward. Having Brent on board has taken our engineering team to a level I never even dreamed of. He was formerly the VP of Engineering at Grin, one of the biggest legacy incumbents in our space, and brings a wealth of knowledge to the Social Snowball team. For the first time, we have a CTO that I truly, deeply trust. So, my message to fellow non-technical founders: Either find a technical founder, or hire a great CTO as soon as you possibly can. The amount of mistakes I made in the early days of building Social Snowball is almost laughable: 📉 Hired over 20 engineers on Upwork that all ended up being a disaster and ruining our codebase 📉 Wasted a year and a half and a ton of personal money for an agency to build our MVP, and they never were able to create a working product 📉 Had a full two month period where we had 0 engineers working for us (and no technical founder), I couldn't find a good engineer to hire and was traumatized by all of the Upwork hires from the past 📉 Hired a CTO (not our current CTO) that ended up becoming a priest and moving to a monastery 2 weeks after I flew to Romania to sign papers in person 📉 Spent tens of thousands on paid ads, just to realize the merchants we were acquiring were mostly fake businesses 📉 Paid TikTokers to post about Social Snowball, just to learn that the only customers we were acquiring from TikTok were dropshipping stores Although every single one of these mistakes felt like the end of the road, we always managed to power through.

The Pod Company makes $150k per month from referrals. All of this with an insane 12X ROI. Support staff mentioned the referral program during ALL customer interactions. 5./ Implemented fraud prevention The Pod Company implemented Social Snowball's Safelinks to prevent affiliate codes from leaking to coupon sites. Each referral code became unique and single-use. This left no room for the codes to end up on coupon sites, diluting affiliates' profits. Results? ✅ First 4 months: $320k in affiliate revenue ✅ Paid out only $27k in commissions This shows that referral marketing is no longer a nice-to-have but a CRUCIAL customer acquisition channel. Two days ago, we dealt with a situation I never imagined would happen in a million years. Someone created fake email addresses impersonating former employees, and sent emails to our customers with misinformation and false claims. Thankfully, most of our customers new the emails were fake and we addressed the situation quickly.
