10 years ago, the word "affiliate" in the ecom world meant something very different than it does today.
Back then, the only affiliates brands were partnering with is now what I refer to as the "legacy affiliate". Under this umbrella are publishers, bloggers, listicles, review sites, media buyers, etc.
Today, those types of affiliate partnerships are still important but its undeniable that there is a new type of affiliate that is becoming more and more important for DTC brands, and I like to refer to these as "modern affiliates".
Under this umbrella are creators, social media influencers, ambassadors, and even a brand's own customers can be powerful affiliates.
But here's the problem - From a technology standpoint, the user experience and functionality that you need to facilitate a successful partnership with a "legacy" affiliate is extremely different than what you need to facilitate a successful partnership with a "modern" affiliate.
To put it simply: If you try to onboard a TikTok creator or ambassador into an affiliate platform that was built for publishers, it will be the worst nightmare of a user experience you could possibly imagine. Everything from onboarding, generating codes/links, attribution, payments, gifting, etc. will be a disaster.
