At a fundraiser event tonight, Walz said of his Cook Out experience: “My team thought that that was like a photo op shake. I ate the whole damn thing.”

Starting this fall, @DukeU will offer free tuition — almost $64,000 per year — to students from NC and SC whose families make $150,000 or less.

Some students are standing on the steps of South Building at #UNC holding American and Israeli flags and singing the national anthem.
The main campus American flag has not yet been restored after it was removed a second time.

⬇️ Local NC news orgs are covering the hell out of Helene’s impacts. Huge props to those directly impacted by the storm — @BlueRidgePublic, @asheville & more — who are doing this work w/ limited resources.
Qualms about lack of coverage should be directed nationally, not locally.
If you are a journalist, now is the time to send all the love we can to our colleagues in western NC. Call out the amazing work they’re doing, like at @BlueRidgePublic. Recognize what they’re going through. Help how you can. Stay safe, y’all. NC journos are so proud of you.
NEW: UNC System President Peter Hans says the UNC-Chapel Hill trustees’ move last week to divert DEI funds to campus safety does not follow the system’s new policy.
The trustees also did not have the authority to amend the university’s budget, he said. newsobserver.com/news/local/…
NEW: UNC basketball player Zayden High was suspended last semester after the university found him responsible for sexual exploitation.
Despite sanctions barring him from athletics, he kept access to facilities & has been around the team at least once. newsobserver.com/news/local/…
🧵: For @newsobserver, I’m at the @NCStateFair for the weigh-in of the giant pumpkins and watermelons!
Follow along as we see which gourds will come out on top. Will we see any records broken today? 🎃🍉🏆
Gov. Walz is speaking at a fundraiser event now, and immediately addressed an elephant in the room: UNC is playing Minnesota in football tonight, in Minneapolis.
“Look, a lot of places you can be tonight, like watching that football game.”
Some news: Next month I’ll officially become the new higher education reporter @newsobserver, covering colleges and universities in the Triangle and across NC.
I’m really grateful for this opportunity and am excited to get started!
The CDC is exploring a partnership with Dollar General to distribute the COVID vaccine.
Y’all know I don’t believe in Dollar Generals as grocery stores, but you better believe I’m behind this one. This would reach a lot of WV-ians without transportation.

NEW: Following the US Supreme Court striking down its race-conscious admissions policy last week, #UNC announced it will begin offering free tuition to incoming NC undergrads whose families make less than $80,000 per year newsobserver.com/news/local/…
Some personal news: I’m excited to announce that I’m joining @newsobserver as a service journalism reporter!
I’ll be helping to bring readers the info they want and need to navigate life in and around the Triangle.
The UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees voted in a special meeting to redirect its $2.3 million in annual DEI-related spending to public safety in its upcoming budget.
Story from @kyle_ingram11 and me: newsobserver.com/news/local/…
For @newsobserver, I’m on the Halifax Mall in downtown Raleigh for the local March for Our Lives rally.
The rally is one of hundreds taking place across the country today to protest the recent mass shootings and gun violence in the US, including in Uvalde, Texas.
NEW: The visas of six international students at UNC-Chapel Hill have been terminated by the Trump administration, according to the university's media relations office.
Follows previous news of revocations at NC State, Duke and around the country.
Story to come @newsobserver
First year covering higher ed @newsobserver treated me pretty well!
Honored to receive the Duke University/Green-Rossiter Award for higher education reporting from @TheNCPress.
And always grateful to work with this 1st place General Excellence staff 📰❤️
Came to Chapel Hill to watch the game without a reservation. Somehow ended up 1st in line for walk-in space (“there’s lots available,” the hostess told me) at one of my favorite spots. This is good energy #GoHeels
In the past 18 months, I’ve:
- Lost a former colleague to gun violence
- Covered a mass shooting in the city where I live
- Lost my best friend to an act of violence
- Covered a shooting on my former college campus
I am so tired.
Inbox: The UNC fraternity brothers who held up the American flag during a pro-Palestinian campus protest will speak at the Republican National Convention next week #ncpol
Pauli Murray, the groundbreaking human rights activist who grew up in Durham, will be featured on U.S. quarters next year.
More on Murray and the honor: newsobserver.com/news/local/…
NEW: The committee just passed this policy with no discussion. It now goes to the full board for a vote via the consent agenda in May, which likely means there will be no further discussion there, either.
BREAKING: A committee of the UNC System Board of Governors is scheduled to vote tomorrow on a policy appearing to target DEI at NC’s public universities, potentially eliminating related jobs #ncpol#ncednewsobserver.com/news/local/…
"Tonight, terror has reached our doorstep. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh," Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press conference moments ago.
Updates to come @newsobserver
UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts just announced at a Board of Trustees meeting that alumna Mia Hamm will serve as the commencement speaker for the Class of 2025.
The ceremony will be held Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. — the second year in a row with an evening ceremony.
So is anyone ready to discuss how Ted Lasso told the team in the finale to “play hard, play smart, play together” aka the Carolina Way … and then Trent’s book was titled “The Richmond Way”
Not to be bitter or overdramatic but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch a UNC v. Duke game again without being genuinely upset that I never got to go as a student
Remarks from coach Hubert Davis. Davis started to apologize to fans for the team not bringing home the national title, but fans quickly interjected with applause and cheers instead.
Yesterday and today, I’ve helped cover a mass shooting event in the city where I work and live.
I can mark the years of my life, almost from the very start, by mass shootings and acts of gun violence.
I’m not sure if it will ever end.
And I am so tired.
Reporting for @newsobserver from the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill as the #UNC men’s basketball team is set to arrive back on campus from the NCAA championship in New Orleans.
A “TAR! HEELS!” chant broke out a few minutes ago as fans get excited for the team’s arrival.

My grandma died of COVID this morning. She had been in the ICU for two weeks.
I have mixed emotions but I mourn her life and the memories we shared over the past 21 years.
Five years ago today, the day after the Heels won the 2017 national championship, I officially decided to attend UNC and accepted my admission. Tonight, UNC plays for another one.
Yesterday, today, forever. It’s always a great day to be a Tar Heel. #GoHeels
Let’s be clear @WRAL: UNC did not “announce” the settlement with Yan’s family.
@VirginiaBridges worked for months to get the documents showing the settlement existed. Then UNC acknowledged the agreement today after we contacted them about it.
This effectively means the trustees' decision to move the funds is nullified.
Meeting materials considered by a Board of Governors committee yesterday contained a spending plan labeled as the chancellor’s budget. Plans for all campuses were presented for information, not votes.
Just a reminder that if you are a public employee emailing another public employee and you write that it’s only for the other employee’s eyes to see…
It’s still a public record and other people aka reporters can see it ✨
NEW: UNC-Chapel Hill students say they were kept out of not only the meeting room at today’s Board of Governors meeting on DEI, but also not allowed to enter the building where the meeting was held.
System says the room was full. newsobserver.com/news/local/…
NEW: UNC’s new class — the first in decades to be admitted without consideration of race — includes a lower proportion of Black students than last year.
This comes as the university considers DEI changes and potentially raising out-of-state enrollment: newsobserver.com/news/local/…
The #UNC Faculty Executive Committee is holding an emergency meeting now with a stated purpose of discussing “events related to the protests on campus.”
It’s official: Paul Newton, the Republican majority leader who retired from the state Senate yesterday, will be UNC-Chapel Hill’s next general counsel and vice chancellor. #ncpol

Holding her family, friends and all those in the @virginianpilot newsroom in love.
We are devastated to report that Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press reporter Sierra Jenkins was among the victims of an overnight shooting in downtown Norfolk. She was 24. pilotonline.com/news/crime/v…
Today, I honored the life of Emma Shafer on the House floor.
As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her life by striving to create a world she dreamt of—one filled with love, equality and opportunity for all.
Are you a UNC student whose professor continued to teach, or attempted to hold class in some way, during Monday's lockdown?
Or a faculty member who felt unprepared by the university to handle the emergency?
I cover higher ed @newsobserver and would appreciate hearing from you.
Kevin Howell was NC State's first Black student body president. Now, he'll be the university's first Black chancellor.
Howell is "the personification of what makes NC State an extraordinary institution," UNC System President Peter Hans said. newsobserver.com/news/local/…
For @newsobserver, I’m at the Peace & Justice Plaza on Franklin St. in Chapel Hill, where the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP has organized a rally to “protect women’s rights” after the Supreme Court overturned #RoeVWade.
12 weeks with @virginianpilot and @DJNF have come and gone — but I’m not going anywhere quite yet! I’m excited to announce that I’ll be staying on as an intern through the fall, starting after Labor Day.

"Every student at Carolina has earned their way to Carolina. I struggle with the assertion that administrators are admitting students who are ill-prepared to succeed here."
