A ROCOR PRIEST ON THE LATEST NONSENSE AGAINST BLESSED SERAPHIM
“It's been brought to my attention that a guy online is slandering Fr. Seraphim Rose as a schismatic who thought the Moscow Patriarchate and OCA are graceless and saying that he was an enabler of the abuses committed by Herman Podmoshensky. Allow me to address these points:
1. Fr. Seraphim wrote a veritable mountain of letters over the course of decades. Whenever people want to demonstrate that Fr. Seraphim thought that the Moscow Patriarchate and the OCA were graceless, they pick a letter from his earlier "zealot" days. I set the cutoff at 1975 when Fr. Seraphim started to notice the problems among the Zealots beginning with the issues in Holy Transfiguration Monastery. He explicitly says during this year in another letter that he and Fr. Herman felt as though they had "created a monster". From here on out, his writings take on a far more tempered tone and he is constantly going to bat for grace being present in the MP notably in his defense of Elder Tavrion (who Metropolitan Philaret also defended btw).
Regarding the OCA, he likewise toned down the rhetoric, though he never had a positive opinion of that Jurisdiction as he lived through the absolute lowest point of ROCOR-OCA relations. You can see a letter he wrote to a young Metropolitan Jonah where he warns him that he can't "fix the OCA", but at no point did he tell him he had to leave it. In fact, if you ask Metropolitan Jonah directly about this, he will tell you that he asked Fr. Seraphim if he needed to leave the OCA in order to be Orthodox, and Fr. Seraphim told him "no" and to "remain with your spiritual father" (in the OCA).
Similarly, he scolded a young Fr. Paul Baba for considering leaving the Antiochians because he didn't think his priest was Orthodox enough.
2. I don't know if you can still find this, but there used to be a message board where
Hieroschemamonk Ambrose Young (Fr. Alexey Young in the world) addressed the allegations of Herman Podmoshensky preying on his monks and young men. He confirmed the allegations against HP and said that he did not start to behave this way until the very end of Fr. Seraphim's life, around the same time that their fabled "oneness of mind" began to falter. Fr. Seraphim was, according to Fr. Alexey, frequently frustrated by Fr. Herman's erratic behavior and expressed relief when he was gone from the monastery as thats when he had peace. When Fr. Seraphim was approached about allegations of inappropriate behavior by Fr. Herman, he was heartbroken, and considered leaving the monastery and finding somewhere else to continue his monastic life, but this was right before he developed the blood clot that claimed his life. His last words to Fr. Herman as he was lying on his hospital bed were, verbatim, "I'm finished with you. Damn you."
I hate to have to address that very depressing bit about the history of St. Herman's Monastery (which remains my favorite place in the world), but I will always defend Fr. Seraphim to the hilt, and the truth (albeit, dark and painful) is much less scandalous than the aspersions. Besides, I have the benefit of having had conversations and read things that others haven't.
Hope this helps.“
