Say this to my aunts and uncles who called to say their goodbyes and seek forgiveness because they weren’t sure they would make it to the next morning as our home town was raided and innocent people killed and kidnapped. Security doesn’t need PR, zaman lafiya can’t be faked !!!!
Nuhu Ribadu: A Silent Force in Nigeria’s Security Architecture
By Bello Kabir, writing from Kaduna State
In the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s security challenges, it is not common to find silent achievers in the corridors of power. Yet, one name continues to resonate with quiet efficiency, strategic thinking, and unshaken integrity: Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the current National Security Adviser (NSA) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ribadu’s appointment in 2023 came with both anticipation and skepticism. As the first NSA without a military background, many questioned how a man known for anti-corruption crusades and intelligence work would navigate the complex terrain of national security. But nearly two years into the role, his results speak louder than credentials.
A Legacy of Integrity and Service
Nuhu Ribadu is no stranger to national duty. As the pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), he redefined public expectations for anti-graft agencies. Under his leadership, the EFCC became a formidable force against corruption—prosecuting powerful individuals and recovering stolen funds with unprecedented boldness.
Bringing that same tenacity into the security space, Ribadu has approached insecurity not just with force, but with intelligence-led strategies. His background in law enforcement and his ability to coordinate with international partners have added new dimensions to how Nigeria tackles insurgency, terrorism financing, and cross-border threats.
Achievements So Far
1. Revamped Intelligence Coordination: For the first time in years, inter-agency cooperation under the NSA's office has significantly improved. Ribadu’s leadership has led to more unified and less fragmented security operations.
2. Targeted Action Against Banditry and Insurgency: His data-driven and intelligence-focused strategies have contributed to the arrest and neutralization of high-profile terror leaders, and the disruption of logistics networks in the North East and North West.
3. Reputation and Diplomacy: Ribadu has rebuilt trust between Nigeria and some of its international security partners. His credibility has helped attract support in intelligence sharing, equipment, and training.
4. Non-Militarized Strategy: As a civilian NSA, Ribadu has emphasized community engagement and soft-power approaches, proving that the solution to insecurity is not always brute force.
5. Stability Within Intelligence Agencies: Gone are the days of public rivalries between DSS, NIA, and other security units. Under Ribadu’s watch, there’s greater synergy and shared responsibility.
A Call for More
While Ribadu’s impact is notable, Nigeria is still far from its desired state of security. Rural banditry, kidnappings, and ethno-religious violence remain serious threats. We must encourage the NSA to deepen collaborations with state governments, strengthen local intelligence frameworks, and advocate for more youth-driven community security models.
Conclusion
Mallam Nuhu Ribadu may not wear military fatigues, but he wears something far more powerful—credibility, competence, and a deep-rooted love for Nigeria. In my view, he remains the most effective NSA we’ve had—precisely because he breaks the mold.
But the work isn’t done. Ribadu’s legacy as Nigeria’s first civilian NSA will be defined not just by what he inherited, but by what he will leave behind. The path is long, but with steady hands like his, we are not walking blind.
