Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities sent a clear and urgent message. Their high-level delegation became the first international body to meet me in Silivri, standing in the very place this government uses to contain dissent. They also visited the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, where our team continues to serve the people with integrity. Council of Europe’s visit to Silivri and their call for my immediate release carry weight. They signal that the fight for democracy in Türkiye is not and will not be forgotten nor ignored. I am grateful to Congress President Marc Cools, Secretary General Mathieu Mori, rapporteurs Bryony Rudkin and Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, and all members of the delegation. Their meetings with Acting Mayor Nuri Aslan and with District Mayors of Üsküdar and Büyükçekmece underscored an essential message: this struggle is as local as it is universal in defending democratic rights and freedoms. Their visit aligned with a powerful moment in Strasbourg. The European Parliament has also adopted its Türkiye Report by a wide margin, condemning the deepening collapse of democratic standards. My arrest was recognized for what it truly is, a politically motivated act aimed at preventing democratic competition. With that vote, the European Parliament made it clear that Türkiye’s EU path cannot advance under current conditions. We, the Turkish people from all backgrounds, will reverse this democratic backsliding and no matter how many voices are silenced, the call for justice will continue to rise.

Millions of voters across Türkiye and abroad are rushing to the polls to my support in the CHP's presidential primary election. With overwhelming turnout, voting hours have been extended in key locations like Saraçhane until 08:30 PM, where citizens from all walks of life are casting their votes for democracy and solidarity. Voting began at 8:00 AM in 5,600 ballot boxes set up across 81 provinces and 973 districts. Voting was scheduled to end at 5:00 PM, but due to heavy turnout, it has been extended until 8:30 PM. In addition to 1.7 million CHP members, all citizens can vote at the "solidarity" ballot boxes.

Their visit at this critical moment reflects a clear and principled commitment to democratic norms, judicial independence, and the protection of fundamental rights. This visit also represents growing international concern regarding the current trajectory of democratic institutions in Türkiye. It reaffirms that the suppression of political participation through judicial means is incompatible with the values shared by democratic societies. Türkiye is a strong nation, and its people hold their democratic rights above all else. The current challenges will not define our future. In time, this period will be fully understood for what it is, and we will focus on restoring the independence of our judicial institutions and fostering a culture of civic unity through education and shared democratic values.

On May 16, during the Europe Day reception in Istanbul hosted by EU Ambassador Thomas Ossowski, a message I wrote was delivered by Acting Mayor Nuri Aslan. In it, I reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to the core European values of democracy, justice, and peace. From Silivri Prison, I have learned with sorrow of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Head of the Vatican State and the spiritual leader of the Catholic world. His moral clarity and unwavering compassion inspired not only the Christian world but also people of all faiths and convictions. A powerful resolution was adopted at the federal congress of Germany’s Social Democratic Party ( @spdde ), calling for my immediate release and expressing full solidarity with Türkiye’s democratic opposition. The resolution condemns the ongoing political repression in Türkiye and affirms support for everyone who bravely defend democracy and the rule of law. CHP Chair Özgür Özel was invited to the congress and voiced our shared democratic struggle. As delegates raised “Free Imamoğlu” signs and greeted him with a standing ovation, their message reached all those who stand for justice and democratic values in Türkiye. This international solidarity shows that the call for democracy in Türkiye resonates far beyond our borders. As Bertolt Brecht once wrote: “Einer kann sich da nicht retten. Keiner oder alle. This gathering—rooted in a simple yet powerful idea—showed that the ties between our cities can build bridges of peace, justice, and democracy. In Belgrade, at the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Midterm Conference on “A Fair Deal for Workers in a Changing World,” my message was read aloud by @etuc_ces Secretary General @EstherLynchs during the Progressive Mayors panel. Though I have been unjustly held in Silivri Prison for nearly two months due to politically motivated charges, I remain deeply committed to sharing Istanbul’s story — and standing up for democracy, dignity, and social justice. In my message, I spoke about the Istanbul Model: green transformation, inclusive services, transparent governance, and strong citizen participation. We believe that local governments are the last line of defense for democracy — and we must lead with courage. The news of the PKK’s dissolution and disarmament marks a 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 for our country. As someone who believes in 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆, and 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 for all, I want to share my thoughts with sincerity and clarity. A thread on 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱: I have learned that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an outlawed terrorist group, has announced that it will lay down its arms and dissolve itself. I am deeply pleased for my country that a 40-year era which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Turkish and Kurdish citizens, including many young people, and drained our resources is finally coming to an end. It is now time for discussion, dialogue, policy-making, and action. We need to do a number of things, both internally and externally, so those days of horror will never be repeated. We need to make legal arrangements in several areas, including the smooth completion of the dissolution and disarmament process and the recognition of our citizens' rights as equal members of the Republic of Türkiye. We must also take steps in social and psychological domains, carry out comprehensive political and legal reforms, and embark on a major development initiative in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions. Such a major and important process cannot be carried out through closed-door negotiations between a small number of politicians, as the government is trying to do, without the support and approval of society, without the involvement of experts, and without basic democratic conditions such as freedom of expression and freedom of association. Such an important process cannot be achieved with a short-term perspective focused on salvaging the day and winning elections, neglecting the regional dimension of the issue. 1/4

I do not accept that democracy, justice, and liberty are no longer part of our common future. The world is once again trying to convince us that these values no longer matter, but I refuse to believe it. From my twelve-square-meter cell in Istanbul, I wrote for Le Monde about one of my Kafkaesque trials, the so-called diploma case. I am accused of forgery, yet no document has ever been proven false. This is what a broken system looks like. It is not justice. It is a political act that turns law into a weapon and truth into a threat. A century after Kafka described a man condemned without knowing his crime, we are still living in a world ruled by arbitrary accusations and political fear. But Türkiye deserves better. Our people have fought for democracy and freedom for generations, and they will not give up what they earned through courage and sacrifice. Justice will return. From Istanbul to Paris, the voice of democracy echoes. On the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, my heartfelt thanks to Mayor Anne Hidalgo and the many mayors who stood with me and with the people of Istanbul. Your support reminds the world: Climate justice and political justice go hand in hand. We cannot build a sustainable planet on repression. We cannot achieve fairness without freedom. In Paris, my message was read aloud. In Istanbul, our hope grows stronger. From the Bosphorus to the Seine, we carry the Olympic spirit — not just in sport, but in solidarity.

Yesterday my words reached Brussels, where thousands gathered to defend democracy and call for justice. Brussels Mayor Philippe Close, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis, Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz, Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma, Frankfurt am Main President of the Municipal Council Hilime Arslaner and Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker stood with us, joined by European leaders Dario Nardella, Giacomo Filibeck, Vula Tsetsi, Christophe Lacroix and Hannelore Goeman. I thank them for their solidarity. Political parties, civil society organisations, youth movements and activists from across Europe made it clear that this struggle crosses borders. They understand that justice cannot be confined by borders and that its absence in one place weakens freedom everywhere. They also know this is bigger than one individual, reflecting the determination of millions to shape their future freely and live under a fair and democratic system. To everyone who showed solidarity today, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Türkiye is going through a difficult period, but we are determined to keep hope alive. Everything will be alright.

Freedoms can be suppressed, but the courage to defend it can never be destroyed. Dilek and I are honored to receive the Award for Courage from the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation in Berlin, an institution devoted to defending liberty and human dignity. Today, as I receive this award, prosecutors in Istanbul have charged me with crimes carrying more than two thousand years in prison –baseless accusations built on hearsay, fabricated witnesses, and political fear. The irony is not lost on me: I am being honored for courage while being punished for calling for democracy, renewal, and justice in my country. This award belongs to the millions of people in Türkiye who continue to fight peacefully for democracy, justice, and equality. No sentence, no wall, no falsehood can imprison their will. I thank the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation (@axelspringer); its solidarity reminds us that the world still sees, and still cares. There is no salvation alone. Either all together, or none of us.

Sadly, we are once again faced with a deeply concerning situation in Syria. The renewed violence, particularly in the Latakia and Tartus regions, threatens efforts to establish stability in the region. From the very beginning, I have emphasized that international cooperation is essential for building an inclusive, democratic state in Syria that embraces all segments of society. Today, I reiterate this call with even greater urgency. The ongoing clashes in Syria not only endanger the country’s hopes of a united and stable future but also pose a direct threat to regional stability. We remain committed to supporting the establishment of a system in which the Syrian people can return and live safely in their own homeland. If peace and stability are not achieved in Syria, new waves of migration will be inevitable, directly affecting Türkiye and the region. For this reason, it is imperative that Türkiye actively engages in Syria’s peace and stability process. Our country must not be a mere spectator to the crises unfolding around us but rather a leading force in ensuring peace and security. I once again urge the international community to take responsibility and act swiftly to prevent further humanitarian tragedies and bring an end to the violence.

From Silivri to Üsküdar, our voice cannot be silenced. We never stole what was not ours, never betrayed the trust of this nation. That is why the people chose us and why they will choose us again. They lost Üsküdar. They lost Istanbul. Soon, they will lose the seats of power they cling to with lies and intimidation. Because the will of the people is stronger than fear. We will resist slander, blackmail, and injustice. We will stand shoulder to shoulder until freedom and justice prevail in every corner of this land. The day is near. And when it comes, everything will be beautiful.

In Istanbul’s Şişli district, thousands gathered once again as they have for 200 days. For 200 days, people from every part of Türkiye have come together to defend their will, their rights, and their democracy. They know that what began as a struggle for justice in Silivri has become a national call for change. The 61st gathering will take place in Brussels, carrying this voice of justice and democracy beyond Türkiye’s borders. Those who fear the people are desperate. They try to silence the elected and punish without judgment, but they cannot suppress a nation that stands together. We will change this system built to serve a few and return it to the millions who built this country with their labor, conscience and hope. Until that day comes, the people will keep gathering, keep standing, and keep believing in a free and fair Türkiye.

It is impossible to associate the removal of Diyarbakır, Van and Mardin Mayors with democratic practices. The three mayors who are replaced by state-appointed trustees were elected by popular vote in the March 31 local elections. Ignoring the will of the people is unacceptable.

In the face of rising authoritarian populism, democratic solidarity is more vital than ever. At the International Conference on Democracy and Social Justice in Athens, our common struggle for democracy and justice in Türkiye found powerful echoes from across the world. Representing me and the people of Istanbul, Nazlı Akyüz, Chair of the EU and Foreign Relations Committee of our Municipal Council, addressed the global audience with a clear message: our fight is not only for our city, but for the democratic future we all share. From Senator Bernie Sanders to Alexis Tsipras, and from scholars to social movements, participants affirmed a shared truth: the erosion of democracy anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere. I was deeply moved by the solidarity shown—especially the words of Alexis Tsipras: “We must oppose human rights violations. We must oppose the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.” My thanks also to Mayor Haris Doukas of Athens for his sincere friendship and unwavering support. Last night, Istanbul hosted a spectacular celebration in honor of our Republic’s 100th anniversary 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷

My statement in response to the unlawful annulment of CHP’s Istanbul provincial congress: No force can take captive the will that founded the Republic, the nation’s leading party, and the sovereignty of the people. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) is the guarantee of the Republic of Türkiye and of our democracy. A handful of power-hungry people are trying to usurp the people’s right to determine their own destiny and to change the government through democratic means. They want to destroy the Republican People’s Party, which stands with steadfast determination against all the evil deeds inflicted upon our state and our nation. They are deeply afraid of our fight that keeps them awake at night, and of the people’s power. They think of themselves as landlords and the people as tenants. They think they can achieve results by trying to stain our immaculate Istanbul Provincial Congress and our Party Congress, by threatening our party with a trustee, and by disregarding the will of our delegates. I declare from Silivri: the CHP congresses and our Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik are our honor. Let it be known that no politician who says “I am from CHP” will never be complicit in this usurpation of will and this dishonor. The attempt to intervene in democracy through the judiciary by those who seek to seize our blessed homeland with political engineering, lawsuits, arrests, backroom plans and trustees, was stopped by the resounding voice of our people that shook Saraçhane on March 19. This mobilization of hope, which they try to end, cannot be stopped either by taking us captive or by threatening the CHP. The Republic of Türkiye will be governed by democracy, not coups.  Those who choose to wage war on the people, who use the institutions of the state to usurp the national will, and who rely on trustees will be defeated and will lose against your will. What is at stake is not the CHP, it is Türkiye. The power to stop this assault on democracy exists in our hearts, our minds, our spirit, and in our faith in Türkiye and democracy. We will not tire and we will never give up. Together, we will protect our future and our democracy. With determination, perseverance, and courage, the people’s power will bring Türkiye hope and peace. And that sentence which makes them tremble with fear will never leave their ears: Everything Will Be Alright!

We are engaged in a great struggle. Together with our people, we continue to work tirelessly day and night for a Türkiye where democracy, justice, prosperity, stability, and peace prevail. We pursue a politics that soothes wounds rather than salts them, and we do so with wisdom and patience, striving to open the door to a new era of peace and serenity. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) is the representative of our nation’s deep longing for peace and tranquility. The Republican People’s Party is, under all conditions and everywhere, the representative of democracy and the voice of the people. The Republican People’s Party, which carries the great responsibility entrusted by the people, is Türkiye’s leading party. The establishment of the parliamentary commission, which we proposed two months ago with the requirement that a qualified majority make its decisions, has been a step in the right direction on Türkiye’s path toward a democratic, just, and lasting peace. Stop the execution without trial! Journalist Merdan Yanardağ was taken into custody in the dark hours before dawn. By evening, a government trustee has been hastily imposed on TELE 1. And those behind it did not even ask Merdan Yanardağ a single question. They took no statement and allowed no defence. Let us speak plainly. This is a raid, a forceful seizure of what does not belong to them. It is a heavy blow to the media, the very voice of democracy. This act is meant to spread fear. But it will not work. You cannot hide the truth from the people of this nation. The truth will break through every barrier and in the end it will prevail. And when it does, that victory will belong to the 86 million people who are today enduring this injustice. Its time is coming.

Today, we launched our campaign in İzmir, a city that has always been at the heart of Türkiye’s democratic struggle. Our journey to success will be defined by integrity, justice, and inclusion and we will unite in the face of polarization to create a Türkiye where no citizen is left behind. For too long, those in power have governed for a privileged few while ordinary citizens struggle with economic hardship, injustice, and suppression. They use politically motivated court cases, media control, and administrative obstacles to silence the opposition. But we will not be silenced. We will not be ruled by fear. On March 23, CHP members have the power to shape the future. This is our moment to stand together, to restore the rule of law and make Türkiye a country which inspires the world as a beacon of democracy.
