Mayor of Istanbul. President of Turkish Municipalities Union. Presidential Candidate. Unjustly behind bars since 19 March 2025. Tweets in Turkish @CAOIletisim

Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul University has made a legally baseless decision to annul my diploma, an act beyond its authority and a troubling sign of political interference in academia. Universities are sacred spaces where young minds shape the future. They must remain independent, free from political interference, and dedicated to knowledge. Türkiye draws its strength from democracy, justice, and the rule of law. When these foundations are challenged, it is not just individuals who must take a stand, but the entire nation. This is not about me. This is about our future. No matter the challenges we face, we will not waver. We will not allow democracy to be undermined. We will not allow the will of the people to be overruled. 🇹🇷 A nation united in #solidarity for #justice cannot be stopped.

The will of the people cannot be silenced through intimidation or unlawful acts. I stand resolute, entrusting myself not only to the 16 million residents of Istanbul but to the 86 million citizens of Türkiye and all who uphold democracy and justice worldwide. I stand firm in my fight for the fundamental rights and freedoms.

I am returning your statement, which insults the flag of the Republic of Türkiye and the President, as it is. We have no need to receive lessons on democracy and law from those responsible for the suffering and deaths of countless innocents including children. Yes, a brighter future is indeed possible—when Palestine is free.
.@RTErdogan is turning Turkey into a dictatorship just because of his support for the murderers and rapists of Hamas, against the stance of the entire free world. He is blocking Instagram, with 57 million users in Turkey, cutting off sports broadcasts because an Israeli athlete defeated a Turkish athlete, threatening to invade a democratic country with which Turkey has no military conflict, and cutting trade relations, harming Turkish exporters to the tune of $6 billion a year. Erdogan is taking a Turkish state with scientific, cultural, technological, and economic capabilities and destroying it, eroding the legacy of Atatürk, who built a progressive and prosperous Turkey. Let's hope for better days. @ekrem_imamoglu

Thank you my dear friend @DarioNardella
The nullification of the University diploma of Mayor of #Istanbul @imamoglu_int who is also the sole candidate for the leadership of Turkey’s Republican People's Party (CHP), is unacceptable. Considering that a degree is a fundamental requirement for a potential presidential candidacy, this development is even more alarming and highlights a severe democratic deficit in Turkey. The international community must take action to condemn and prevent such an outcome. Full solidarity with Mayor İmamoğlu.

Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities sent a clear and urgent message. Their high-level delegation became the first international body to meet me in Silivri, standing in the very place this government uses to contain dissent. They also visited the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, where our team continues to serve the people with integrity. Council of Europe’s visit to Silivri and their call for my immediate release carry weight. They signal that the fight for democracy in Türkiye is not and will not be forgotten nor ignored. I am grateful to Congress President Marc Cools, Secretary General Mathieu Mori, rapporteurs Bryony Rudkin and Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, and all members of the delegation. Their meetings with Acting Mayor Nuri Aslan and with District Mayors of Üsküdar and Büyükçekmece underscored an essential message: this struggle is as local as it is universal in defending democratic rights and freedoms. Their visit aligned with a powerful moment in Strasbourg. The European Parliament has also adopted its Türkiye Report by a wide margin, condemning the deepening collapse of democratic standards. My arrest was recognized for what it truly is, a politically motivated act aimed at preventing democratic competition. With that vote, the European Parliament made it clear that Türkiye’s EU path cannot advance under current conditions. We, the Turkish people from all backgrounds, will reverse this democratic backsliding and no matter how many voices are silenced, the call for justice will continue to rise.

I stand tall and will keep my head high. Fear cannot stop the inevitable! One way or another, you will be defeated. You will be defeated by our just cause, our courage, our humility, and our warm smiles. My great nation, Do not be sad, do not be disheartened, and never lose hope. Together, we will erase this blow to our democracy, this dark stain, once and for all. The days are near when those who orchestrated this dark plot will be held accountable, both in this world and before the Almighty in the hereafter. I call on all 86 million of my fellow citizens to head to the ballot boxes and show the world our fight for democracy and justice. I stand tall, and will keep my head high. Everything will be much better.

Today, I took the first step towards a new beginning by officially submitting my application to become the Presidential Candidate of the Republican People’s Party (CHP). We are embarking on a journey with our nation—striving for dignity, freedom, justice, prosperity, and unity—toward a brighter future. Our mission is clear: to build a democratic and strong state, ensure a wealthy and peaceful nation, and guarantee equality and freedom for every citizen. Guided by the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, we will work hard, prosper abundantly, and share fairly. With faith, hope, and the unwavering support of our people, may our path be clear.

They locked me in Silivri to break the will of a nation. They want the world to believe this is about a piece of paper, a trial, a courtroom. But everyone knows the truth. Against these attacks, our greatest guarantee is, without a doubt, the wisdom of our nation, its sense of justice, its conscience, and the lessons in democracy it has delivered to those who have interfered with its will until today. But everyone should know this: I will not bow nor will I be silenced. And I believe, with all my heart, that my people will rise from this darkness stronger, freer, and ready to claim the future that belongs to them.

Since March 19, I have been unjustly imprisoned. Since my arrest, millions of Turks of all walks of life raised their voices for justice and democratic rights. Thousands beyond our borders joined this dignified stance in a global gesture of solidarity. Governments of France and Germany, mayors of over 75 European cities, 24 international city networks including the B40 which I founded, the four major political groups in the European Parliament, the United Nations bodies, the Council of Europe, Amnesty International, Freedom House, and Human Rights Watch—some of the world’s most respected institutions—have spoken out firmly against this injustice. Paris granted me honorary citizenship. City halls in Bologna, Florence, and Modena displayed banners calling for my freedom. Mayors and representatives of 20 German cities came to Istanbul to express their support. Diplomats from the U.S., Germany, France and over 10 countries monitored my hearings. The European Parliament and Council of Europe decided to send fact-finding missions to Istanbul. I know we, the Turkish people, will prevail because just causes always triumph in the end. #SolidarityWins #JusticePrevails

You embarked on this journey with nothing but a ring on your finger, yet now you bear countless stains for which you cannot account, whether at home or abroad. With these burdens, you aim for my whole existence, hard work, and endeavour that I and my family have built over three generations. You attack our honour and dignity and confiscate the future of my children. And you do all this with a handful of unqualified individuals. Everyone involved in this is complicit in corruption. I have foreseen and warned my nation about this. The same mentality that seized my diploma will also target your belongings, your honour, and your property, committing all forms of plunder and assault. As a nation, we must stand united against this evil. This is my call to my people: Our nation is greater. I also call upon members of the judiciary. To the tens of thousands of honourable and ethical prosecutors and judges of the Supreme Turkish Judiciary who serve with love for their nation, I cry out to you: You must take action and address this handful of your colleagues who are tarnishing our judiciary, humiliating us on the global stage, and destroying our reputation. I trust in the Supreme Turkish Judiciary. Silence is not an option, nor should it be. Lastly, I address all politicians serving in the AK Party and its ruling coalition. These events transcend political affiliations and ideals. This has now become an issue concerning our nation, beginning with your own families. The time has come to speak out. In this land, the saying 'let the snake that doesn’t bite me live a thousand years' must not hold. Instead, I call on everyone to declare, 'Even the snake not harming me personally, cannot find refuge in our lands,' and to raise their voices accordingly. Our nation is great. Sovereignty belongs to the nation, unconditionally and without exception.

Today, Türkiye woke up to a profound betrayal.  The ongoing judicial process is far from being fair - it is an execution without trial. I invite our nation to fight for their rights. This fight is crucial for the future of our nation and our children.  For the future of Türkiye, make sure to cast your vote today. Then join us in Istanbul’s Saraçhane and in the squares of democracy all across Türkiye to make your voice heard. Today is the day to claim responsibility and stand up for justice against those who usurp the will of the people. All together, leaving no one behind.

🚨 Today in Turkey, Instagram has been banned. As the Mayor of Istanbul, I strongly believe that communication bans do not benefit any society. Limiting access to social media platforms stifles free expression and hinders the flow of information. I urge the authorities to reconsider this decision and lift the ban. On March 19, I was detained, only one day after my university diploma was unlawfully revoked. These two actions were not independent, nor were they coincidental. They were part of a deliberate and coordinated judicial harassment, carried out through the misuse of state institutions to block my candidacy for presidential elections and suppress the will of 15.5 million citizens who voted at the CHP open primaries. What unfolded was not a legal process, but a direct assault on democratic principles and the right of the people to choose their leader. 🇹🇷🌹We condemn the attempt of the Turkish President Erdogan to jeopardise the presidential bid of the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu. Following a questionable investigation, Istanbul University annulled Imamoglu's university diploma while the Turkish law requires presidential candidates to hold a valid university degree. This is yet another attempt to crack down on the democratic opposition in Türkiye. We extend our support to @herkesicinCHP, to @eczozgurozel , @ekrem_imamoglu and all the democratic opposition in #Türkiye.

In the early hours of March 19, I was detained by dozens of armed police officers. It was a political operation — not a legal one — timed just days before CHP’s presidential primary. But what followed was far more powerful than the repression itself: people from all across Türkiye stood up. From Istanbul to Rize, citizens took to the streets, joined our party, and reminded us all that democracy lives in the will of the people. As I wrote in my op-ed for The New York Times, “I have faith in the people of Türkiye and beyond who fight for justice and democracy.” This struggle is not just about one candidacy or one city — it is about rebuilding a republic that belongs to its citizens, not to fear. nytimes.com/2025/03/28/opini…

President of the Party of European Socialists, Stefan Löfven, Vice President of the European Parliament Katarina Barley, and Members of the European Parliament my dear friend Dario Nardella and Evin Incir visited Istanbul today and expressed their solidarity outside Silivri Prison. Their visit at this critical moment reflects a clear and principled commitment to democratic norms, judicial independence, and the protection of fundamental rights. This visit also represents growing international concern regarding the current trajectory of democratic institutions in Türkiye. It reaffirms that the suppression of political participation through judicial means is incompatible with the values shared by democratic societies. Türkiye is a strong nation, and its people hold their democratic rights above all else. The current challenges will not define our future. In time, this period will be fully understood for what it is, and we will focus on restoring the independence of our judicial institutions and fostering a culture of civic unity through education and shared democratic values.

From Silivri Prison, I have learned with sorrow of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Head of the Vatican State and the spiritual leader of the Catholic world. In his lifetime, Pope Francis stood as a courageous voice for peace, justice, and human dignity—particularly in the face of the humanitarian tragedies unfolding in places like Palestine. His moral clarity and unwavering compassion inspired not only the Christian world but also people of all faiths and convictions. A powerful resolution was adopted at the federal congress of Germany’s Social Democratic Party ( @spdde ), calling for my immediate release and expressing full solidarity with Türkiye’s democratic opposition. The resolution condemns the ongoing political repression in Türkiye and affirms support for everyone who bravely defend democracy and the rule of law. CHP Chair Özgür Özel was invited to the congress and voiced our shared democratic struggle. As delegates raised “Free Imamoğlu” signs and greeted him with a standing ovation, their message reached all those who stand for justice and democratic values in Türkiye. This international solidarity shows that the call for democracy in Türkiye resonates far beyond our borders. As Bertolt Brecht once wrote: “Einer kann sich da nicht retten. Keiner oder alle. Alles oder nichts.” This is best understood as: “No one can save themselves alone. It is all of us or none.”

They first took away my freedom, now they are trying to silence my voice. On May 8, access to my official X account, followed by nearly ten million people, was blocked in Türkiye by court order. This is not only an attack on my digital freedom, but on the fundamental right of millions to access information. According to the court decision, my posts “disrupt public order.” On the contrary: my words seek to build a just, inclusive, and democratic public order—one that respects rights, freedoms, and human dignity. This campaign of judicial harassment will not cow me, whether it is the annulment of my university diploma or the baseless charges that attempt to link me to bribery, organized crime, or terrorism. These are not acts of justice, but of repression. Like many journalists, writers, and public figures in our country, I now face this archaic and undemocratic method of censorship. But let it be known: these efforts will not succeed. I will raise my voice against injustice and one-man rule. 📢 From Silivri Prison: A Message to Europe and Türkiye Türkiye’s path to democracy is being tested, but the will of the people remains unbroken. Today, the European Parliament has spoken. Voices from across the political spectrum have united to defend democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Türkiye. A bold step to amplify local democracy and protect the will of the people. Though I remain unjustly imprisoned, my message — read by CHP Secretary General Selin Sayek Böke — was clear: Democracy cannot be jailed. Hope cannot be silenced. And the people’s will cannot be denied. In Istanbul we are proving every day that another way of governing is not only possible, it is already here. We owe it to our youth! We will expand student dormitory opportunities for university students across the entire country, just like we did with the dormitories of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. As we did at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, we will ease their financial burden with scholarship support, allowing them to focus on their personal development. A generation that dares to dream, works hard, creates, and finds joy in life will be the cure for all of Türkiye. We did it in Istanbul, and we’ll do it across the country.

Today marks a pivotal moment not just for #Istanbul, but for #democracy itself. As we celebrate our victory, we send a resounding message to the world: the decline of democracy ends now. Istanbul stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to the resilience of democratic values in the face of rising authoritarianism. Our triumph echoes the spirit of our Republic's founding by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, inspiring those under oppressive regimes with a vision of freedom and equality. Istanbulites, we are not just citizens of this historic city; we are guardians of democracy, leading the way for nations worldwide.

From my prison cell in Silivri, I salute the brave people of Beyoğlu who filled the square of the historic “Sixth Municipal District.” I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the European mayors and representatives who stood with our cause by attending our rally in Beyoğlu during these trying times: @terziev, Mayor of Sofia and President of the B40 Balkan Cities Network, @ttomasevichr, Mayor of Zagreb, @DominicFritzTM, Mayor of Timișoara, Sharon Dijksma, Mayor of Utrecht, José Francisco Antonaya, Director General for International Relations of Madrid, @andresobczak, Secretary General of Eurocities, and Francesco Tomasini, Member of the City Council of Brescia. Your solidarity strengthens our fight for the democratic future that Türkiye deserves.

I was unable to meet my European colleagues who came to visit me in Silivri. Still, I followed their visit first to Saraçhane, the heart of our municipality, and then to Silivri itself. They stood shoulder to shoulder with İstanbul, Türkiye, and democracy. It was an honor to accept Eurocities' “Special Democracy Award” received by my wife Dilek İmamoğlu on my behalf. The award belongs to all citizens of Türkiye who believe in peace, justice, and freedom and to everyone who resists growing authoritarianism. I thank my colleagues from Eurocities and the Balkan Cities Network (B40). They showed that democracy beats strongest in free cities, and that courage spreads faster than fear. Their stance proves this struggle is not about one man, but about all who defend human dignity. With the will of our people, and the solidarity of our friends, we will keep moving forward for democracy and justice.

European Parliament Türkiye Rapporteur @NachoSAmor visited Silivri to meet with me, conveying Europe’s clear commitment to the democratic values that Türkiye’s future must be built upon: rule of law, justice, and the sovereign will of its people. Earlier, in his meeting with Acting Mayor Nuri Aslan at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Mr. Sánchez Amor reaffirmed the European Parliament’s support for the freely elected administration of Istanbul and for the democratic choices made by millions of citizens. The systematic interference targeting elected officials, the use of judicial power for political purposes, and the ongoing attempts to dismantle local democracy have created an internal crisis that challenges universal democratic principles. Türkiye’s struggle for democracy resonates far beyond its borders and carries global significance for the defense of fundamental rights and freedoms. To all our citizens who stand with hope, patience, and dignity: this is a shared fight for the democratic future of our Republic. The resolve we draw from our people and from our democratic partners continues to strengthen us in this critical moment. I extend my sincere appreciation to Mr. Sánchez Amor for his principled position and for carrying Europe’s democratic voice to Istanbul and Türkiye at this decisive moment.

To All Democrats in Europe! From my cell in Silivri Prison, I send you this invitation: On Sunday, 12 October 2025, we will come together in Brussels, at Place Jean Rey, for the Brussels Democracy Rally – “Standing Up for the Will of the People.” This gathering led by CHP Chair Özgür Özel seeks to unite European democrats in response to the unlawful detention of elected mayors in Türkiye. is not only for me — it is for every citizen whose right to vote, to speak, and to be represented is under threat. It is for every mayor, journalist, and activist who believes that democracy must never be silenced. I call on European democrats, city leaders, and defenders of justice, to stand with us in unity and solidarity. Your presence in Brussels will send a powerful message: that the will of the people cannot be silenced, and that the bonds of democracy and freedom are stronger than fear. Let us show that the voice of conscience, justice, and peace still echoes from İstanbul to Brussels, and from Europe to the world. With faith in democracy and in the people, Ekrem İmamoğlu Elected Mayor of Istanbul Presidential Candidate of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) 🗓️ Sunday, 12 October 2025 📍 Place Jean Rey, Brussels 🕛 Gathering 12:00 | Speeches 14:00 | Closing 17:00 #StandUpForDemocracy

From behind the walls of Silivri, I followed the Turkey–Germany Sister Cities Summit with deep gratitude and hope. This gathering—rooted in a simple yet powerful idea—showed that the ties between our cities can build bridges of peace, justice, and democracy. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our friends from Germany and across Türkiye who came together in solidarity. Your presence is a powerful reminder: democracy thrives when we stand together. Even in my absence, our shared dream continues to grow. And together, we will carry it forward.

In Belgrade, at the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Midterm Conference on “A Fair Deal for Workers in a Changing World,” my message was read aloud by @etuc_ces Secretary General @EstherLynchs during the Progressive Mayors panel. Though I have been unjustly held in Silivri Prison for nearly two months due to politically motivated charges, I remain deeply committed to sharing Istanbul’s story — and standing up for democracy, dignity, and social justice. In my message, I spoke about the Istanbul Model: green transformation, inclusive services, transparent governance, and strong citizen participation. We believe that local governments are the last line of defense for democracy — and we must lead with courage. Let’s keep building bridges — city to city, citizen to citizen — for a more just and livable world. #Democracy #Solidarity #IstanbulModel #ETUC2025

The news of the PKK’s dissolution and disarmament marks a 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 for our country. As someone who believes in 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆, and 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 for all, I want to share my thoughts with sincerity and clarity. A thread on 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱: I have learned that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an outlawed terrorist group, has announced that it will lay down its arms and dissolve itself. I am deeply pleased for my country that a 40-year era which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Turkish and Kurdish citizens, including many young people, and drained our resources is finally coming to an end. It is now time for discussion, dialogue, policy-making, and action. We need to do a number of things, both internally and externally, so those days of horror will never be repeated. We need to make legal arrangements in several areas, including the smooth completion of the dissolution and disarmament process and the recognition of our citizens' rights as equal members of the Republic of Türkiye. We must also take steps in social and psychological domains, carry out comprehensive political and legal reforms, and embark on a major development initiative in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions. Such a major and important process cannot be carried out through closed-door negotiations between a small number of politicians, as the government is trying to do, without the support and approval of society, without the involvement of experts, and without basic democratic conditions such as freedom of expression and freedom of association. Such an important process cannot be achieved with a short-term perspective focused on salvaging the day and winning elections, neglecting the regional dimension of the issue. 1/4

I do not accept that democracy, justice, and liberty are no longer part of our common future. The world is once again trying to convince us that these values no longer matter, but I refuse to believe it. From my twelve-square-meter cell in Istanbul, I wrote for Le Monde about one of my Kafkaesque trials, the so-called diploma case. I am accused of forgery, yet no document has ever been proven false. This is what a broken system looks like. It is not justice. It is a political act that turns law into a weapon and truth into a threat. A century after Kafka described a man condemned without knowing his crime, we are still living in a world ruled by arbitrary accusations and political fear. But Türkiye deserves better. Our people have fought for democracy and freedom for generations, and they will not give up what they earned through courage and sacrifice. Justice will return. Democracy will prevail. lemonde.fr/idees/article/202…

Yesterday my words reached Brussels, where thousands gathered to defend democracy and call for justice. Brussels Mayor Philippe Close, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis, Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz, Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma, Frankfurt am Main President of the Municipal Council Hilime Arslaner and Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker stood with us, joined by European leaders Dario Nardella, Giacomo Filibeck, Vula Tsetsi, Christophe Lacroix and Hannelore Goeman. I thank them for their solidarity. Political parties, civil society organisations, youth movements and activists from across Europe made it clear that this struggle crosses borders. They understand that justice cannot be confined by borders and that its absence in one place weakens freedom everywhere. They also know this is bigger than one individual, reflecting the determination of millions to shape their future freely and live under a fair and democratic system. To everyone who showed solidarity today, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Türkiye is going through a difficult period, but we are determined to keep hope alive. Everything will be alright.

Freedoms can be suppressed, but the courage to defend it can never be destroyed. Dilek and I are honored to receive the Award for Courage from the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation in Berlin, an institution devoted to defending liberty and human dignity. Today, as I receive this award, prosecutors in Istanbul have charged me with crimes carrying more than two thousand years in prison –baseless accusations built on hearsay, fabricated witnesses, and political fear. The irony is not lost on me: I am being honored for courage while being punished for calling for democracy, renewal, and justice in my country. This award belongs to the millions of people in Türkiye who continue to fight peacefully for democracy, justice, and equality. No sentence, no wall, no falsehood can imprison their will. I thank the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation (@axelspringer); its solidarity reminds us that the world still sees, and still cares. There is no salvation alone. Either all together, or none of us.

Sadly, we are once again faced with a deeply concerning situation in Syria. The renewed violence, particularly in the Latakia and Tartus regions, threatens efforts to establish stability in the region. From the very beginning, I have emphasized that international cooperation is essential for building an inclusive, democratic state in Syria that embraces all segments of society. Today, I reiterate this call with even greater urgency. The ongoing clashes in Syria not only endanger the country’s hopes of a united and stable future but also pose a direct threat to regional stability. We remain committed to supporting the establishment of a system in which the Syrian people can return and live safely in their own homeland. If peace and stability are not achieved in Syria, new waves of migration will be inevitable, directly affecting Türkiye and the region. For this reason, it is imperative that Türkiye actively engages in Syria’s peace and stability process. Our country must not be a mere spectator to the crises unfolding around us but rather a leading force in ensuring peace and security. I once again urge the international community to take responsibility and act swiftly to prevent further humanitarian tragedies and bring an end to the violence.

From Silivri to Üsküdar, our voice cannot be silenced. We never stole what was not ours, never betrayed the trust of this nation. That is why the people chose us and why they will choose us again. They lost Üsküdar. They lost Istanbul. Soon, they will lose the seats of power they cling to with lies and intimidation. Because the will of the people is stronger than fear. We will resist slander, blackmail, and injustice. We will stand shoulder to shoulder until freedom and justice prevail in every corner of this land. The day is near. And when it comes, everything will be beautiful.

In Istanbul’s Şişli district, thousands gathered once again as they have for 200 days. For 200 days, people from every part of Türkiye have come together to defend their will, their rights, and their democracy. They know that what began as a struggle for justice in Silivri has become a national call for change. The 61st gathering will take place in Brussels, carrying this voice of justice and democracy beyond Türkiye’s borders. Those who fear the people are desperate. They try to silence the elected and punish without judgment, but they cannot suppress a nation that stands together. We will change this system built to serve a few and return it to the millions who built this country with their labor, conscience and hope. Until that day comes, the people will keep gathering, keep standing, and keep believing in a free and fair Türkiye.

In the face of rising authoritarian populism, democratic solidarity is more vital than ever. At the International Conference on Democracy and Social Justice in Athens, our common struggle for democracy and justice in Türkiye found powerful echoes from across the world. Representing me and the people of Istanbul, Nazlı Akyüz, Chair of the EU and Foreign Relations Committee of our Municipal Council, addressed the global audience with a clear message: our fight is not only for our city, but for the democratic future we all share. From Senator Bernie Sanders to Alexis Tsipras, and from scholars to social movements, participants affirmed a shared truth: the erosion of democracy anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere. I was deeply moved by the solidarity shown—especially the words of Alexis Tsipras: “We must oppose human rights violations. We must oppose the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.” My thanks also to Mayor Haris Doukas of Athens for his sincere friendship and unwavering support. This kind of international democratic alliance gives us hope. And hope is always stronger than fear. Let’s continue to stand together—across borders, beyond ideologies—until justice prevails. #FreeImamoglu #DemocracySolidarity

My statement in response to the unlawful annulment of CHP’s Istanbul provincial congress: No force can take captive the will that founded the Republic, the nation’s leading party, and the sovereignty of the people. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) is the guarantee of the Republic of Türkiye and of our democracy. A handful of power-hungry people are trying to usurp the people’s right to determine their own destiny and to change the government through democratic means. They want to destroy the Republican People’s Party, which stands with steadfast determination against all the evil deeds inflicted upon our state and our nation. They are deeply afraid of our fight that keeps them awake at night, and of the people’s power. They think of themselves as landlords and the people as tenants. They think they can achieve results by trying to stain our immaculate Istanbul Provincial Congress and our Party Congress, by threatening our party with a trustee, and by disregarding the will of our delegates. I declare from Silivri: the CHP congresses and our Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik are our honor. Let it be known that no politician who says “I am from CHP” will never be complicit in this usurpation of will and this dishonor. The attempt to intervene in democracy through the judiciary by those who seek to seize our blessed homeland with political engineering, lawsuits, arrests, backroom plans and trustees, was stopped by the resounding voice of our people that shook Saraçhane on March 19. This mobilization of hope, which they try to end, cannot be stopped either by taking us captive or by threatening the CHP. The Republic of Türkiye will be governed by democracy, not coups.  Those who choose to wage war on the people, who use the institutions of the state to usurp the national will, and who rely on trustees will be defeated and will lose against your will. What is at stake is not the CHP, it is Türkiye. The power to stop this assault on democracy exists in our hearts, our minds, our spirit, and in our faith in Türkiye and democracy. We will not tire and we will never give up. Together, we will protect our future and our democracy. With determination, perseverance, and courage, the people’s power will bring Türkiye hope and peace. And that sentence which makes them tremble with fear will never leave their ears: Everything Will Be Alright!

We are engaged in a great struggle. Together with our people, we continue to work tirelessly day and night for a Türkiye where democracy, justice, prosperity, stability, and peace prevail. We pursue a politics that soothes wounds rather than salts them, and we do so with wisdom and patience, striving to open the door to a new era of peace and serenity. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) is the representative of our nation’s deep longing for peace and tranquility. The Republican People’s Party is, under all conditions and everywhere, the representative of democracy and the voice of the people. The Republican People’s Party, which carries the great responsibility entrusted by the people, is Türkiye’s leading party. The establishment of the parliamentary commission, which we proposed two months ago with the requirement that a qualified majority make its decisions, has been a step in the right direction on Türkiye’s path toward a democratic, just, and lasting peace. We have said from the beginning that we, as the representatives of our party, are part of this responsibility in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM), which we have identified as the only platform where the Kurdish issue can be addressed. Let no one doubt that, by participating in the parliamentary commission, we will fulfill our responsibility to our country and our people fully and with due diligence. We want a Türkiye where weapons are permanently silenced. We want a Türkiye free from terrorism and conflict. And most importantly, we want to see Turks and Kurds walking together side by side toward the same goal, as two siblings united in heart and will. We are on the path of genuinely strengthening this brotherhood, which no force, at home or abroad, can break. We know very well that this journey passes through a democracy where the rule of law prevails and applies equally to all. As the Republican People’s Party, we will make every effort to ensure that the commission in which we participate works toward democratization, a solution to the Kurdish issue, and social coherence. Remaining faithful to the principle deeply embedded in the essence of our state and our nation, “Peace at Home, Peace in the World,” we will put forth our will to establish a wide-reaching peace both in our country and in our region. It is our hope and wish that this historic process will be carried out with sincerity, sensitivity, and transparency, by all political parties and the members of parliament who serve on the commission, for the future of the Republic of Türkiye, the future of our people, and the indivisibility of our nation. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our Chairman, Mr. Özgür Özel, who is leading us with great determination toward this goal, and to all our party members who have contributed to this effort. I wish great success to our parliamentarians who will serve on the parliamentary commission. Until Türkiye becomes a country of democracy, justice, prosperity, and peace ONWARD WE GO WITH FULL SPEED!

Stop the execution without trial! Journalist Merdan Yanardağ was taken into custody in the dark hours before dawn. By evening, a government trustee has been hastily imposed on TELE 1. And those behind it did not even ask Merdan Yanardağ a single question. They took no statement and allowed no defence. Let us speak plainly. This is a raid, a forceful seizure of what does not belong to them. It is a heavy blow to the media, the very voice of democracy. This act is meant to spread fear. But it will not work. You cannot hide the truth from the people of this nation. The truth will break through every barrier and in the end it will prevail. And when it does, that victory will belong to the 86 million people who are today enduring this injustice. Its time is coming.

Today, we launched our campaign in İzmir, a city that has always been at the heart of Türkiye’s democratic struggle. Our journey to success will be defined by integrity, justice, and inclusion and we will unite in the face of polarization to create a Türkiye where no citizen is left behind. For too long, those in power have governed for a privileged few while ordinary citizens struggle with economic hardship, injustice, and suppression. They use politically motivated court cases, media control, and administrative obstacles to silence the opposition. But we will not be silenced. We will not be ruled by fear. On March 23, CHP members have the power to shape the future. This is our moment to stand together, to restore the rule of law and make Türkiye a country which inspires the world as a beacon of democracy. We will build a country where democracy is not just about elections but about opportunity, justice, and equal rights for all. With integrity, solidarity, and a commitment to real change, we will reclaim our future.
