Today, @cafreeland is introducing a motion to increase the capital gains inclusion rate in Canada. This isn't a wealth tax — it's a tax on innovation and risk-taking. Investing in new products or ideas is inherently risky. Entrepreneurs need incentives, not penalties, to drive 🇨🇦 ​forward. This policy will disincentivize risk-taking and tax Canadian ambition at a time when we need more entrepreneurs, not fewer. The OECD predicts Canada will be the worst-performing advanced economy for per-person GDP growth until 2060. Killing our tax competitiveness is not the way to fix this. We need to change course, and fast.

It’s almost 2025, and yet here we are in Canada, unable to post links on most social media platforms to news articles from any Canadian media. Why? Bill C-18, the Online News Act, passed in June 2023, forces platforms like Meta and Google to pay publishers for linking to their content. So what was meant to ‘support journalism’ has instead stifled access to it. A law designed for “fairness” now feels like a digital gag order—totally absurd in the age of free information. We should have listened to @mgeist (as usual)

The events of this weekend in Israel have left the world in a darker place and they are weighing heavy on me. I am the grandchild of Holocaust survivors. My grandparents, Jeno and Eva, survived persecution, escaped the Hungarian revolution, and came to Canada for a better life for our family. Their resilience and their experience with antisemitism lives within me, and it’s why being part of and nurturing the Jewish community and our culture is so deeply important to me. Not since the Holocaust has this large a number of Jews been killed in a single day. We said Never Again - and Never Again means right now. Innocent lives have been lost at the hands of Hamas terrorists and we must all unequivocally condemn these horrific and barbaric acts. It’s in times like this we ask ourselves how we can help. I’m sharing what I’m doing, which is by no means an exhaustive list, in hopes it can help you with where to start on this: First, I’m speaking up. We must stop antisemitism and hate in its tracks, and that means calling it out for what it is as soon as we see it. Next, I’m supporting organizations that are helping on the ground in Israel. We are supporting the United Hatzalah of Israel which provides rapid urgent medical treatment during emergencies. They have a network of over 6500 volunteer medics that help to save thousands of lives every year across Israel. Finally, I'm checking in on my friends, family and my Jewish community. Jews around the world are facing a collective trauma. It’s in times like these that we need to support one another. To check in on one another. To my non-Jewish friends, regardless of who you are, your political views, my message to you is to please check in with your Jewish friends - every gesture matters as these are very dark and scary times for us and our community. 6 months ago my dad said he wanted to get in shape. He's been overweight most of his life and wanted to make a change. I found him a trainer, he committed to it, and this is him today. He’s lost 90lbs. I'm so proud of him.

Thank you for your kind words and support, Prime Minister. When I was a law student, I made a promise to a young rabbi that if I ever had the means to build a Centre for the Jewish students of Ottawa, I would do it. Last night I made good on that promise. This is a list of the top 5 companies in Canada and the US. It’s also a timestamp of innovation. Apart from @Shopify, Canada’s top companies mostly date back to the 1800s. If we want Canada to be a global leader, this needs to change. We need more Canadian businesses in the top five that define innovation on a global scale. My hope is that Shopify can be a role model but I want others to join us. Who’s coming?

Stablecoins like USDC have grown to over a trillion dollars in monthly transaction volume. But they haven’t seen mass adoption in mainstream commerce. @Shopify is partnering with @coinbase and @stripe to change that. Merchants can now accept USDC payments from hundreds of crypto wallets and receive payouts in their local currency - all through Shopify Payments. It’s a new era of commerce and you don’t need to be a crypto expert to embrace it.
